Drivers Education, first aid, and vocations are the subiects which make up Sopho- more Goals, a course required in the sophomore year, The courses are required to be taken before a student may graduate. The State of California requires that every student take a six weeks course of drivers education, Mr. David Casper is the instructor. This course is taken in preparation for the drivers training class, which is behind the wheel operation of an automobile, taught by Mr. Carl Phoenix and Mr. Charles Beaty. Mr. Jim Price teaches first aid, another course requirement. In this class, students are shown how to react and what to do in case of an emergency. Vocations, taught by Mr. Orville Underwood, enables students to plan their future on the basis of several tests which are given. ' ' trrt .. 4 A L.s,,,,. . Students build for better tomorrow through practical classes Mr. Scheuber instructs two students in proper planting procedure. Modesto High School's Agriculture Department revolves around courses which teach methods of modern and better farming. Courses are offered in vocational agriculture, animal husbandry, surburban agriculture, and general agriculture. The Home Economics Department of Modesto High School teaches students not only the essentials of homemaking, but also many ofthe small details. Utilitarian courses such as sewing, cooking, child care and home nursing are taught. Because homemaking will be the end result ofthe maiority ofthe girls, a wide range of homemaking skills are stressed. To better show the various methods utilized in home- making, the classes go on field trips to some of the more important stores in Modesto. Lectures by guest speakers are another phase of the program. Other class activities in- clude trips to food plants, the annual Modesto Junior College Fashion Show, and the county home economics demonstrations. Music and Art courses bring culture to student body of MHS hge . X t sc... f S Mr. Robert Wing directs the Concert Choir during a rehearsal session. Culture is very essential, and contributing to this ideal are Modesto High School's Art and Music Departments. The Music Department offers classes in wind instruments, string instruments, inter- mediate band, advanced band, orchestra, chorus, Treble Clef Choir, Boys' Glee, and Concert Choir. Musical organizations give much to the extra curricular life of the school. The band performs at the football games and during halftime activities. There is also a pep band which plays at basketball games and rallies. The orchestra ioins with the Concert Choir for the Twlight Musicale. The orchestra also plays for drama productions. The two organizations again ioin for the spring concert. The band and choir enter state competition festivals in the spring. This year the band and choir were honored to be participants in the T960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley. In attendance was the President of the United States. The head of the department is Mr. Paul Copeland. The art students enter a number of art contests. The contest most important is the Scholastic Magazine. Entries are iudged in Sacramento. Awards are either a gold key or an honorable mention, and being entered in the National Scholastic Magazine Con- test where they compete for a national gold key.
