Modesto High School's Mathematics Department includes course offerings in algebra, geometry, advanced algebrq, trigonometry, and solid geometry to college preparatory students who are planning to follow a career of engineering, science, mathe- matics, and related fields. For students who are not interested in following a field related to mathematics, or who wish to brush up on their math before entering an advanced course, courses in general math are offered. For those students who wish to improve their skills in the fun- damentals of arithmetic, Modesto High School offers a course of practical math. Students are not required to take math courses providing they are able to pass the iunior math test which is given during the iunior year. Courses given are wood, metal, machine shop, electricity, printing, and auto shop, In auto mechanics shop, students are allowed to bring their own cars to shop. Their classes are offered in concentrated blocks. This allows the boys to do longer periods of work than if they had only one hour. Because they are allowed to bring their own cars, they gain a practical mechanical knowledge. Students learn to operate some of the complex machinery from the equipment that the shops have. The basic principles of wood and metal construction are learned. Because of this program, the Trades and Industry students are given an opportunity for training in the occupation which they plan to enter after they complete their formal education. ,Q The head 'of the Trades and lndustry Department is Mr. Lester Peterson. Students build for better tomorrow through practical classes Mr. Scheuber instructs two students in proper planting procedure. Modesto High School's Agriculture Department revolves around courses which teach methods of modern and better farming. Courses are offered in vocational agriculture, animal husbandry, surburban agriculture, and general agriculture. The Home Economics Department of Modesto High School teaches students not only the essentials of homemaking, but also many ofthe small details. Utilitarian courses such as sewing, cooking, child care and home nursing are taught. Because homemaking will be the end result ofthe maiority ofthe girls, a wide range of homemaking skills are stressed. To better show the various methods utilized in home- making, the classes go on field trips to some of the more important stores in Modesto. Lectures by guest speakers are another phase of the program. Other class activities in- clude trips to food plants, the annual Modesto Junior College Fashion Show, and the county home economics demonstrations.
