Modesto High School's History Department offers students a better understanding of past and present events. Classes offered are Geography in the News, Current Affairs, Government in Action, World History, and American History. 'Geography in the News presents geographical information and customs of other nations to freshmen students. State and local government are also important studies during the year. World History offers the study of ancient civilizations, their cus- toms and cultures. The final part of the year is spent studying the world during recent years. Current Affairs is an up to date class based on the study of' recent world events. The purpose of this class is to make students aware of the happenings throughout the world. Government in Action attempts to bring students a clearer view of the manner in which the government operates. American history is the study of events concerning America's development. Science attempts to serve needs of students in space age all ei Mr. Roger Harrell assists Barbara Lynch and Angus MacClean in a Physics experiment. With the great emphasis placed upon science today, Modesto High School's Science Department has taken on new importance, The Science Department offers courses in general science, biology, chemistry, physics, applied science and advanced biology. General Science gives the students basic facts about science. Biology and advanced biology delve into many of the detailed facts about plants and animals. Chemistry and physics offer a laboratory science in which the students can learn about the elements and phenomena of the world. Applied science is for those students who feel that they cannot succeed in the other courses. The importance of science was never greater. The development of atomic energy, space rockets and many other items makes it more and more imperative that the student have a good background in science. Courses given are wood, metal, machine shop, electricity, printing, and auto shop, In auto mechanics shop, students are allowed to bring their own cars to shop. Their classes are offered in concentrated blocks. This allows the boys to do longer periods of work than if they had only one hour. Because they are allowed to bring their own cars, they gain a practical mechanical knowledge. Students learn to operate some of the complex machinery from the equipment that the shops have. The basic principles of wood and metal construction are learned. Because of this program, the Trades and Industry students are given an opportunity for training in the occupation which they plan to enter after they complete their formal education. ,Q The head 'of the Trades and lndustry Department is Mr. Lester Peterson.
