Foreign Languages bring interest of other cultures to classes Miss Mary Gamble Miss Janice Ridges Q . iiiliii x Fa Miss Mary Gamble helps Carol La Rosa and Tina Sampson with Virgil's Aeneid. Modesto High School offers courses in Latin, Spanish, and French. The purposes of these courses are to give students a better and more thorough understanding of the languages, customs, and cultures of other lands. Four years of Latin are offered, the third and fourth years being concerned with the works of Virgil and Cicero. The first two years are concerned with development of basic skills. French is offered for four years, and deals with both language skills and French cul- ture. Third and fourth year French are primarily concerned with the translation of French novels, both historical and modern. Spanish has perhaps the most practical use in this area, Both conversational and formal Spanish are taught. Conversational Spanish is a course for those students who are interested in learning to speak Spanish without having to be concerned with grammar. Formal Spanish includes both grammar and conversation. The head of the Foreign Language Department is Miss Marian Spaan. s S.. Business Classes meet requirements of business fields Mrs. Dorothy Bumgardner shows Nancy Underhill the use of the lBM machine. Business is an important part of today's world. The Business Department trains students to meet problems of this field. The Business Department prepares the student to handle the requirements of various job fields. Secretarial, bookkeeping, merchandising, and clerical are the areas offered in business. Classes included in these fields are business machines, typing shorthand, bookkeeping, and CPT. This year, to aid college bound students, MHS offered a course in College Skills. This course was designed to teach students the proper methods of note taking, a form of shorthand, and the proper way to type out a thesis. Typing, shorthand, and filing are essential classes for those who wish to become secretaries or bookkeepers. An aid to the teachers is the CPT, which has students print tests, study sheets, and other items for teachers. The head of the Business Department is Mrs. Virginia Johnson. 'M if ,- vs st. Science attempts to serve needs of students in space age all ei Mr. Roger Harrell assists Barbara Lynch and Angus MacClean in a Physics experiment. With the great emphasis placed upon science today, Modesto High School's Science Department has taken on new importance, The Science Department offers courses in general science, biology, chemistry, physics, applied science and advanced biology. General Science gives the students basic facts about science. Biology and advanced biology delve into many of the detailed facts about plants and animals. Chemistry and physics offer a laboratory science in which the students can learn about the elements and phenomena of the world. Applied science is for those students who feel that they cannot succeed in the other courses. The importance of science was never greater. The development of atomic energy, space rockets and many other items makes it more and more imperative that the student have a good background in science.
