Modesto has been 'fortunate in having both a good educational policy and an excellent administration staff, The chief executive officer is Dr. James H. Carson, who this fall journeyed to the USSR in order to study educational policies and practices of that country. Assisting Dr. Corson is Dr. Robert Elliot, assistant to the superintendent for secondary education. Mrs. Evelyn Hanshaw is the director of curriculum from grades 7--l2. At Modesto High School, operational procedure is handled by a large staff. Mrs. Sally Simmonds is the head of the main office staff, Mrs. Comini is in charge of the book room, Mrs. Zoe Rogers is in charge of the staff in the attendance office, and Miss Helen Hartwich is the school librarian. The main office staff works with student activities, handles student registration and receives visitors. The attendance office issues absence reports and deals with other functions of student attendance. Assisting in the main office are Mmes, Lavola Taylor, Frances Cartwright, Frances Goularte, and Frances Higbee. Miss Evelyn Van Duyn assists Mrs. Rogers in the attendance office. Board of Education, Counselors set policy, guide students Board of Education: Mr. Charles M. Spencer, Mrs, Jean Knoles, Mr. Cecil Plummer, Mrs, Catherine Everett, and Mr. lan Hardie. Effective student guidance is brought about through the combined efforts of the Board of Education and the counseling staff of Modesto High School. The job of the Board of Education is the establishment of counseling standards for the entire Modesto school system. On the other hand, the counselors at MHS work with students in- dividually. Members of the counseling staff are Principal J. T M .i: Q X I f s 'tec FT A 1 l ' it Mrs. Evelyn Tinkle, Mrs. Bette Kirksey, Mrs. Odell Setliff, Mrs. Marie Hays, Mrs, Lucille Ford. The service staff is an essential part of keeping Modesto High School running smoothly. This group includes the bus drivers, the cafeteria staff, and the janitorial staff. The maiority of students attending Modesto High depend on the buses for transpor- tation to and from school. This makes the bus staff an iinportant part of school life at MHS. The cafeteria staff is also a necessity at Modesto High. This group guarantees a hot, wholesome lunch to students each day at a reasonable price. Keeping the campus clean and neat is the ianitorial staff. Headed by Mr, Truman Hand, the janitorial crew keeps the school in good repair in addition to keeping the campus neat and sanitary. Each member of the service staff plays an important role in the drive toward ef- ficient operation.
