CLASSES One night in June, 1886, a small group of people assembled in old Roger's Hall to honor the first graduating class of Modesto High School, which is pictured here. Starting with this class of ten, Modesto High School has graduated approximately 15,000 stu- dents. Some of this number have given their lives for their country in four wars, some have distinguished themselves in the pro- fessions, in the arts, in business, and in agriculture, and some have made the Mo- desto area their home and advanced the community through other useful occupations. Since its birth in l883, Modesto High School has witnessed many local and uni- versal changes. ln those early years it was not uncommon to see horses hitched in front of-the school, while today the curbs are lined with horseless carriages. lt took only one room and one teacher to meet the edu- cational needs of the forty students who were enrolled in Modesto High during its first year. Today it takes about one hundred teachers and as many rooms to educate the enrollment of over 2,000 students. Despite these changes, however, the high moral and academic standards have remained constant through the years. Page 23

Page 24 Seniors Ready Themselves For New Life Soon the final bell will be ringing and the seniors will be leaving Modesto High, which has been their home for tour years. Memories of work and fun are intermingled in the minds of most students. Work, such as term papers and cramminrg, has been overshadowed by fun such as sports, dances, and student body activities. As freshmen the big thrill was winning the frosh footlball championship. By its sophomore year the class had become adiusted to high school life. Junior-Senior Prom entranced the students in their junior years, and while working on this annual affair, they were introduced to the ritual of writing term papers. Finishing the four years and highlighting them all is the graduation, which will take the classmates into the world as adults.
