Dr. Will Jumper Mr. Charles Willbu rn Mr. John Whitaker Specialized classes have been a main feature in the educational program at Modesto High School. In past years, an independent study class for seniors was offered, Students participating in these classes were eligible to take math analysis, English Masterpieces, a foreign language, and other chosen courses. This year a similar program has been offered to both iuniors and seniors. The iuniors may take American Literature, American History, and Advanced Algebra. Moreover, the seniors have the opportunity to go to Modesto Junior College and ta ke courses in the sciences and humanities. At Modesto High School they are required to take English Masterpieces. Math analysis is also offered. One of the main differences between independent study and other classes is that the students are required to do most of the work on their own. Correlated classes are also an important feature in the program at Modesto High School. These special classes are formed mainly to suit the individual needs of the less advanced pupil. Smaller classes allow more time to be spent on the pupil, rather than dealing with the class as a whole. Understanding is generally better in this program because the student has the advantage of having more individual teacher aid. Specialized programs dealing with independent study are in action all over the state this year working on a trial basis. Both the senior and the iunior programs are advantageous to the students, development before entering college. Mr. Curt Davis Mr. Dan Gonsalves Mr. William Han Page 20

These subjects offer practical experience and training. Drivers education is a subject required of all students by the State of California. It teaches students current traffic laws and good driving practices. This subiect is taught by Mr. David Casper. Drivers training applies many of the principles learned in drivers education. This class, taught by Mr. Carl Phoenix and Mr. Charles Beaty, gives students actual operation of an automobile. Another state course requirement, first aid, is taught by Mr. Jim Price. lt is realized that in case of an emergency that the students should be able to meet the situation by having an adequate know- ledge of first aid.
