! ' Foreign Languages Offer Interest Mrs. Evelyn Coleman Miss Catherine Doherty Students practice writing sentences on the board in Mrs. Coleman's Spanish class. For the students in Modesto High who have the interest and the ability, the language depart- ment offers courses in Spanish, Latin, French, and German. The head of the Language Department is Miss Marian Spaan. Miss Spaan and Mrs. Coleman teach classes in conversational, first, second, third and fourth year Spanish to a fair percantage of our student body. Because of the Spanish influence in this area, this language can be put to a great deal of practical use. Latin is supposed to be a dead language, but to the students of Miss Mary Gamble, it is not only alive but hard to tame. Latin is the basic romance language from which comes Spanish, Italian, Portu- guese, and French. Miss Gamble teaches first, second, and third year classes. Although Latin is not used in conversation in the world today, it is truly a scholars, language because of the ancient documents that were written in Latin. Up in Room 102 you you will find a few students who spend a portion of their morning hours learning the culture of France. French is taught at Modesto High by Miss Katherine Doherty, who previous to her arrival at Modesto, spent two years as a Fulbright exchange student in France. Miss Doherty teaches classes in first, second, third, and fourth year French. For a few senior students in the Independent Study Program, German is offered under the direction of Dr. Will C. Jumper. The primary reason this language is taught is because many of these students will go on to college and will encounter the use of German in research work. Creative Cultures Are Developed Janet Eckle, Gerald Fischer and Jerry White paint a picture for the student body, Mr, LeRoy Giovannoni Miss Chella Heaton Mrs. Betty Milam Contributing to the cultural life at Modesto High School are the Music and Art Departments. Classes offered by the music department are wind instruments, string instruments, intermediate band, advanced band, orchestra, chorus, Treble Clef Choir, boys' glee, and Concert Choir. Musical organizations contribute much to the extra-curricular life of the school. The band plays at the football games and performs during the halftime activities. This year they used to full advantage their new uniforms which were purchased by the band parents, the student body, and the Board of Education. The pep band plays for basketball games and rallies. The orchestra provides intermission music for the two dramatic plays. The concert choir and the orchestra join for the operetta while the choir and band contribute music for graduation and baccalaureate, lnstruments and voices unite for the spring concert. The boys glee also has new uniforms. The band enters the State Music Festival and Modesto Junior College Talent Day. In addition, this year Modesto High School was represented in the Northern California Honor Orchestra by Cynthia Copeland, Jon Glaves, and Bruce Nutson. Each year art students enter a number of contests. The most important of these is sponsored by Scholastic Magazine. Regional entries are judged in Sacramento, Here they have a chance of winning a gold key or an honorable mention and being entered in the National Scholastic Magazine Contest where they compete for a national gold key. overhaul a car in auto mechanics. Mr. Boyce Ashford Mr. Chalmer Atwood Mr Bull Boyd Training received at Modesto High School has given students excellent opportunities in the field of industry. Classes are offered in wood, metal, machine shop, electricity, printing, and auto shop. Classes in auto mechanics and printing are given in concentrated blocks. This en- ables the students to do more extensive projects than would be possible if only one period were offered. In the auto mechanics class the students are allowed to bring their own cars into the shops. ln this way students gain practical mechanical experience. Equipment in machine shop enables students to operate some of the complex machinery which they may operate after they graduate from school. Students also learn the basic principles of wood and metal construction. Through this program, the Trades and lndustry students are trained for occupations which they plan to enter after the completion of their education. Department head is Mr. Lester Peterson.
