Students Build For Better Tomorrow Four agriculture students study different varieties of seeds to be planted. Mr. Russell Cosgrave Mr. Pius Scheuber Mr. Ted Sypolt Agriculture classes teach methods of modern farming. Classes are offered in the fields of vocational agriculture, animal husbandry, suburban agriculture, and general agriculture, The Homemaking Department of Modesto High School is provided with instructors who teach the students not only the essentials of homemaking, but the small details. Such classes as cooking, sewing, child care, and home nursing are taught. In as much as homemaking will ultimately be a career for ninety percent of all girls, a wide range of homemaking skills are stressed. Besides the usual classroom procedures, the homemaking classes take field trips to major stores in Modesto and have guest speakers. Additional activities include trips to food plants, the annual Modesto Junior College Fashion Show, and county home economics demonstrations. Mr. Ted Sypolt is head of the Agriculture Department, while Mrs. Lillian Bleil heads the Home Economics Department. Science Evolves New Ideas NWSE 'RT ll Chemistry students work on experiments in laboratory. Mr. Paul Campbell Mr. Norman Faber Mrs. Phyllis Gross New ideas are being created everyday in the world of science. The Science Department offers classes in general science, biology, chemistry, physics, applied science, and advanced biology. General science gives students basic facts about science. Biology teaches detailed facts about plant and animal organisms., Students learn about the elements in chemistry. Physics gives students a scientific explanation forlmany everyday phenomena. Applied science is designed for those students who' feel they cannot succeed in general science or biology. The importance of science is becoming more evident every year. Because of the emphasis being placed on rocket development, on atomic energy projects, and on the many other aspects of our society which depend upon science, it is necessary for students to have a sound background in science. Creative Cultures Are Developed Janet Eckle, Gerald Fischer and Jerry White paint a picture for the student body, Mr, LeRoy Giovannoni Miss Chella Heaton Mrs. Betty Milam Contributing to the cultural life at Modesto High School are the Music and Art Departments. Classes offered by the music department are wind instruments, string instruments, intermediate band, advanced band, orchestra, chorus, Treble Clef Choir, boys' glee, and Concert Choir. Musical organizations contribute much to the extra-curricular life of the school. The band plays at the football games and performs during the halftime activities. This year they used to full advantage their new uniforms which were purchased by the band parents, the student body, and the Board of Education. The pep band plays for basketball games and rallies. The orchestra provides intermission music for the two dramatic plays. The concert choir and the orchestra join for the operetta while the choir and band contribute music for graduation and baccalaureate, lnstruments and voices unite for the spring concert. The boys glee also has new uniforms. The band enters the State Music Festival and Modesto Junior College Talent Day. In addition, this year Modesto High School was represented in the Northern California Honor Orchestra by Cynthia Copeland, Jon Glaves, and Bruce Nutson. Each year art students enter a number of contests. The most important of these is sponsored by Scholastic Magazine. Regional entries are judged in Sacramento, Here they have a chance of winning a gold key or an honorable mention and being entered in the National Scholastic Magazine Contest where they compete for a national gold key.
