The Mathematics Department at Modesto High School serves a wide range of student needs. The department offers courses for: CU the college preparatory student, C21 the student who plans to follow a career in science, mathematics, engineering and related fields, and C35 the student who wishes to advance his understanding of mathema- tics. Courses are offered in algebra, geometry, advanced algebra, trigonometry, and solid geometry. Courses also may be taken in general mathematics and practical mathe- matics. These courses are for students who feel they need more practice in math before taking the more advanced math classes. Practical skills designed for use in everyday life are also offered. There is no requirement making students take math, but if a student should fail the math test given in the iunior year, one semester of senior mathematics is required. College preparatory students, however, must take algebra and geometry to complete their course. A course i offered in business mathematics for students going into that field. Business Meets Future Needs Sharon Buer and Gaylord Wilburn operate one of the duplicating ma- chines in the business department. Business is an integral part of today's world. It is on the philosophy that the Business Department of Modesto High School trains students to meet the problems of the business world. The offerings of the Business Department prepare the students not only to handle his own business affairs, but also to meet the requirements of the many iob openings in the business field. Classes in business are offered to students in four major fields: QU Secretarial, C21 Bookkeeping, C31 Merchandising, and Q41 Clerical, Classes included in these fields are business machines, typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, and CPT lcooperative part timej. Business Machine classes teach students how to run ditto machines, electric type- writers, calculating machines, and mimeograph machines. Typing and shorthand are essential for a secretarial iob. Typing is a practical course for students and it may be used in all aspects of living. Keeping records of expenses and incomes, and learning the procedures of filing are included in the Bookkeeping classes. CPT students help teachers by printing tests, and writing business letters. , Mrs. Thelma Zingel is the head of the Business Department. History Unites Past and Present Mr. Don Huntington lectures to his social studies class on European history. Throughout the existence of Modesto High School, the history department has grown and developed. Today, the history department gives students a full understanding of every phase of history. Classes of histoqf which are offered at Modesto High School include Geography, World History, American History, Senior Problems and Current Affairs. Geography is open to freshmen students, and it consists of the study of the geo- graphy and customs of the entire world. State and local government are two of the most important units of the year. World History is mainly made up of the study of ancient civilizations. Several phases of the ancientlworld are touched upon, The final semester of World History includes the study of the world during recent' years. World wars are also a main study. American History is an extensive study of the American continent, the American way of life, and the customs and societies of the American people. Constitutional studies start off the year. Recent news events are taken into consideration in the Current Affairs class. It is the purpose of this class to make the student aware of the importance of the happenings in his daily life. The world's events are reviewed in the class. The main and final purpose of the History Department is to give students with a thorough knowledge of the past. lt is the philosophy of the department that only through a complete and thorough understanding of the past can students meet the challenges of the present world.
