Teaching the use of good grammar, both in speech and in writing, is the main obiective of the English teacher. 'Students at Modesto High School have a wide variety of English subiects offered to them. Some ot these subiects are Speaker's Bpreau, Debate, Public Speaking, English Masterpieces, and Modern Literature. Speech classes include the development and the interpretation of speeches, the con- struction of debate cases, and the overall understanding ot better speech, English Masterpieces carries on a historiccl survey of the classics of English litera- ture. Special emphasis is placed on a type study ol the various kinds of literature. Modern Literature is a course geared to help students develop an appreciation ot literature ot the contemporary period. Each ot these courses promotes the intellectual enrichment of the student. Business Meets Future Needs Sharon Buer and Gaylord Wilburn operate one of the duplicating ma- chines in the business department. Business is an integral part of today's world. It is on the philosophy that the Business Department of Modesto High School trains students to meet the problems of the business world. The offerings of the Business Department prepare the students not only to handle his own business affairs, but also to meet the requirements of the many iob openings in the business field. Classes in business are offered to students in four major fields: QU Secretarial, C21 Bookkeeping, C31 Merchandising, and Q41 Clerical, Classes included in these fields are business machines, typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, and CPT lcooperative part timej. Business Machine classes teach students how to run ditto machines, electric type- writers, calculating machines, and mimeograph machines. Typing and shorthand are essential for a secretarial iob. Typing is a practical course for students and it may be used in all aspects of living. Keeping records of expenses and incomes, and learning the procedures of filing are included in the Bookkeeping classes. CPT students help teachers by printing tests, and writing business letters. , Mrs. Thelma Zingel is the head of the Business Department.
