Modesto has been fortunate in having both a good educational policy and excellent admin- istrative staff. The chief administrative officer of the Modesto City Schools is Dr. James H. Corson, superintendent of schools. Dr. Robert Elliott, assistant to the superintendent, is concerned with the high schools. Mrs. Evelyn Hanshaw is the director of curriculum for grades 7-12. At Modesto High School, operational procedure is handled by a large staff. Eleanor Hughes is in the book room, Mrs. Sally Simmonds is the head of the main office staff, Mrs. Zoe Rogers is 'in charge of the staff in the attendance office, and Miss Helen Hartwich is the school librarian. Those who assist Mrs. Simmonds are Mrs. Lavola Taylor, Mrs. Frances Cartwright, Mrs. Frances Goularte, and Mrs. Frances Higbee. The primary function of the main office is to work with student activities, to handle student registration, and to receive adult visitors. This office works with the Board of Education and the student body. The attendance office is concerned with student attendance records. V 1 School Board and Counselors Provide Leadership Board of Education: Mr. Thomas Beard, Mrs. Jean Knoles, Mr. Cecil Plummer, Mrs. Catherine Everett and Mr. lan Hardie. The Board of Education and the counseling staff work together in order to provide student guidance. The Board of Education has the responsibility for establishing overall counseling principles for the entire Modesto school system, while the counseling staff at Modesto High School works individually with high school students. This staff includes, besides Principal J. W. Berry, Miss Alice Ahlberg, dean of stu- dent personnel, Miss Elsie Beyer, dean of girls, Mr. Robert Colton, supervisor of instruction, Mr. Harold Hutchinson, vice-principal, Miss Helen Moser, counselor, Mr. Eugene Mould, counselor, Mr. Neal Smith, attendance counselor, Mrs. Hazel Suprenand, nurse, Mr. Paul Whitmore, dean of boys, Mr. Lawrence Steenwyk, director of student activities.
