Our teachers have the spirit, the interest, the vitality that make a school live. And a harder-working group of people you'll never meet! Notice before and after school the lighted classrooms: teachers helping students with their difficulties. Visit Mo- desto High in the evenings: teachers working on departmental problems, committees striving to improve the cur- riculum, P-TA meetings. In addition to these activities, many faculty members take on additional responsibilities as club or class advisers. Several depart- ments themselves require outside work for the teachers. Thanks to the industry and the spirit of our faculty, the school curriculum offers a wide variety of valuable expe- rience to every student. M if-fi Mr. Eugene Dyke s A -3 Mr. O. L. These clubs help students and teachers to become better acquainted with each other, for they have ci chance to work together on various activities and projects. Not only do clubs have recreational and social value, but they are also educational. They help to de- velop and inspire various interests of the students. Every proiect undertaken at Modesto High School as a whole has been thoroughly supported by these or- ganizations. Without this support, MHS could never have attained the goal it MM has. They develop leadership abilities in the students. After polishing up various mistakes, the Big Cats traveled to Oakdale on September 21 to win their first game from the Mustangs. The league opener against Lodi on the home turf provided thrill after thrill before a climax of a 20 to 20 tie game. The following Thursday the Panthers took another win, from the Stockton Colts, with a splendid team ef- fort pulling through 18 points to 6 of Stockton. C. K. McClatchy's hopes of upsetting MHS were shattered on Cctober 12 as Modesto came from behind to defeat the spirited Lions 22 to 13. The following Friday the big question was Can the small but determined and spirited Panthers come through to conquer the powerful Downey Knights? The answer came at the sound of the gun in the final quarter with the Panthers, surrounded by a blaze of glory, on the big end of a2O to 13 score. The varsity held its undefeated record intact for the next two weeks with victory over Norte Del Rio bya 51 to 6 score and El Camino with 21 points to the Eagles' meager 6. The Kittens over- came the Oa kda l e Mustangs, by a 9 to O score and pulled out ahead of Lodi 7toO. The Man'- teca Buffaloes beat the little cats to the punch with a 14 to 0 score on the MJC turf in a prac- tice bout. C. K. McClatchy's Lion cubs handed the B Team its first league defeat October i2 at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento. Downey and the Kittens were tied in the league with a l and l record when the big, little game decided MHS was the team that showed teriffic team effort and all-out performance in beating the Pages l4 to 6 on October i9 at the MJC Stadium. . A tough Grant Pacer B team edged the Kitten eleven with a T6 to T3 score on the home Field November 8. An undefeated, untied, and unscored upon B team from Turlock played host to the MHS B's in the preliminary on Thanksgiving Day. Undefeated and untied, the champion Bullpups remained, but not unscored upon. The score at the sound of the Final gun Found the Kits on the short end of a 27 to l2 score. Barney Anooshian stated at that time that the team included the biggest and most agile fresh- men to come to Modesto in years. The young Panther sopho- more team lost to the powerful Ripon Redskin. The main rea- sons for the loss were inexperience and the excitement of the game. The second game of the season proved to be unsuccessful, as MHS lost to the Turlock Bulldogs. The game proved to be beneficial, as the boys showed improvement in tackling and blocking. Modesto lost to its cross-town rival by a score of 6 to 0. This was the only encounter this year that Modesto dropped to Downey. Even though the Sophomores didn't win many games, they gained valuable experience that will help them in the future. Throughout the year, the team tasted de- feat again and again. But the club didn't crumble or lose de- termination. This is the brand of athlete which MHS is proud of. These boys whofought for MHS with the best that they had are going to make the varsity squad go some day. Freshman Continued Undefeated The frosh grid season started out with much enthusiasm, sixty-three football players turned out for the frosh team. Coach Neal Smith exclaimed that the team appeared at this time to be an average freshman squad. This was a prediction of a good team, since Mr. Smith's frosh clubs have a reputation for being strong. In the opening game of the season, the Panther freshmen scalped the Ripon Papooses by a 24-I8 score. Coach Neal Smith was very impressed with the development of his squad and commented that the game was o team effort. ln the second game, the freshmen defeated the Cougars on the home field of the Cougars. Modesto remained undefeated by con- quering their cross-town rivals. Modesto frosh faced an easy task, as they scored in every quarter against the Turlock Bulldogs. In the last three games of the season, the team played with real determination and team work. These factors proved to be the reason that they were undefeated. Many activities throughout the year contrib- uted greatly to this spirit. At athletic events the rally members, the band, the pep band, the song leaders, and the yell leaders created an air of enthusiasm. These, however, weren't the only groups or activities which contributed to the overall school spirit. Such groups as the choir and the orchestra and activities like plays, dances, and musicales also helped to promote school spirit. By par- ticipating in a variety of activities, MHS students utilized their talents to make this a year of achievement and success. ,. Af W.
