No barker ever talked more fluently or widely than have the public speakers who made Modesto High School well known wherever they competed this year. An outstanding feature ot the year's ac- tivities was the large number ot students who parti- cipated in debating, extemporaneous speaking, ora- tory, and Shakespearean divisions. The debate season on the subiect ot the exten. sion of consumer cooperatives opened with the an- nual Lowell debates, held at that school this year. Lorraine Rossi, Fay Rice, Peggy Boothe, and Terrell Tennant participated in these non-decision clashes. A group ot eighteen upper class and twelve lower class debaters competed against eleven schools in the Fall tournament held here in December. Be- sides being the host, Modesto wasithe victor, tor Margaret Stimmann and John Baird, debating both sides, deteated a Bakersfield team in the tinals. Modesto speakers next turned their attention to the school extemporaneous speaking contest. ln the school tinals, Margaret Stimmann, speaking on Jo- seph Stalin, was named winner with John Baird tak- ing second. Eight students represented Modesto at the interscholastic contest at Tracy. Here, John Baird won tirst prize, Ferris Boothe was awarded second place and Margaret Stimmann took tourth place. Returning trom this triumph, the speakers settled down to prepare themselves on the spring debate question ot government ownership ot the railroads. With less than a month ot preparation, twenty- six local debaters argued pro and con in the tourna- ment at Ripon. Two Modesto teams survived the preliminaries, but did not reach the tinals. Seven teams upheld Modesto torensically at the Fresno State College tournament. The top team of Marga- ret Stimmann and Ferris Boothe were narrowly cle- teated in the tinals by the Southern champion Bakerstield boys, while John Shull and Terrell Ten- Pnblic Speaking Coaches Miss Evelyn Bright, Miss argaret Painter, Mr. James Fisher-Northrup, 11 . nanl' look 'fourth place. The resulis were nearly identical at the San Francisco Slate tournament wilh Modesto being defeated by a Lowell team in the final round. The official Naiional Forensic League fourna- ment at fhe College of Pacific wound up the debat- ing season. Oi Modes'l'o's fhree teams, two survived the preliminaries without defeat The nex+ day, Slim- mann and Boothe had two losses, which pul lhem in fourlh place, and Shull and Tennant came through wilh a 'lie for second by virtue of only one loss. They 'lhus won'the right lo enler the national tourna- ment at Terre Haute, Indiana, as did Sfanley Wil- son who won a second place medal in oratorical declamalion. The school oralorical contest was the next evenl' of interest. ln the finals in assembly, Ferris Booihe emerged victorious wiih Margarei Stimmann and Bradley Campbell tying for second honors. Together with seven semi-finalisls, fhe six finalists compeled in the Central Valley California oratory meet in Madera. Competing against seven others, Camp- bell won second prize in a close decision. Sfill more speaking honors were won for Mo- desto by Joy Smith and Walter Fields who cap- lurecl first places in the couniy Shakespearean con- test. Besides debating actively, the lower-classmen held an exlemporaneous speaking conlest in which fifly-one competed. Lee Brooks emerged lhe vicior in the finals with lmogene Brown second. As head public-speaking coach, Miss Margaret Painier deserves much of The credil' for her ac+ivi+y's success. She was given invaluable aid during the year by Miss Evelyn Bright, debating, extemporan- eousq Miss Margarel Hosletler and Clyde Kimball, lower-class debating, Miss Barbara Perry, lower- class exfemporaneousg and James Fisher-Northrup, Shakespearean.
