OVERMAN lN CONTRAST fo fhe world of business and indusfry, school condifions were never so favorable as fhey have been fhis year. Never before have pupils been so responsive, so co-operafive and so ready fo make fhe mosf of fheir opporfunifies. During fhe year if has been found necessary fo reduce school expendifure greafly, buf fhis sacrifice in maferial fhings seems fo have been more fhan compensafed for by beffer affifudes and beffer co-operafion on fhe parf of pupils. , This improved affifude has been especially noficeable in fhe acfivify life of fhe school. Alfhough, in many cases, you have been forced fo work wifh a budgef less fhan half as large as in former years, fhere has been no decrease in your parficipa- fion and inferesf. Af presenf our governmenf officials are experimenfing wifh a new deal which is nofhing more fhan an affempf fo balance fhe budgef wifhouf sacrifice of wor'l'h while governmenfal acfivifies. You have solved fhe same problem in your sfudenf body acfivifies fhis year. ln looking ahead fo nexf year you will expecf fo make sfill furfher reducfions in sfudenf body expendifures, buf if fhe experience of fhis year is a criferion you will sfill have an increase in inferesf and enfhusiasm and beffer co-operafion in all acfivify work. . .i is 442 by dminisflfaiion Vice-Prim:ipaI's Message MISS DAVIS FACING FORWARD, fhe moffo of fhis year's Sycamore, is af once an epifome of fhe acfivifies of fhis presenf year, a slogan which indicafes fhe view-poinf of fhe sfudenfs of fhe Modesfo High School, and a descripfion of fhe spirif fhaf lives in Modesfo High School. During fhe pasf year fhere has been in Modesfo High School no depression of spirifs, of moods nor of morale. ln all classroom enferprises, and in all exfracurricular acfivifies, sfudenfs and faculfy alike have been facing forward. We have been able fo rise above fhe life sifuafions fhaf are pasf fo face wifh courage and eagerness whafever condifions may be ahead. These are excifing, momenfous days. Hisfory is being made righf now, and we are parficipafing in fhe making of if. We are re- ioicing in fhe consciousness fhaf youfh has a vifally imporfanf place in fhe new deal. We face forward, nof in relucfance because we musf, buf in delighf because we have confidence in fhe fufure. The Sycamore has given us a vanfage poinf on which we may sfand and cry as Columbus did, Land ahead . Lef us, as sfudenfs and faculfy, accepf fhe challenge given us by fhe sfaff. Lef us fruly face forward as individuals and as fhe greaf co- operafing family of Modesfo High School. I ,, -- l l K3 2: Associafed Sludenfs GRATTAN HOGIN THE Associafed Sfudenfs have had a prosperous year alfhough handicapped by a decreased budgef. The parficipafion in sporfs fhis year was more general fhan ever before. Even fhough a championship foofball feam was nof produced, fhe loyalfy of fhe sfudenfs was shown by fhe large number fhaf affended fhe games. The baskefball season was very successful as if produced fwo champions and fwo runners-up. The frack feam won fhe Norfhern C. l. F. championship and added an- ofher permanenf frophy. The agriculfure boys confribufed fheir share of honors won. ln public speak- ing, fhe debafe feam did nof fare so well, buf in fhe Lowell High debafes, sopho- more debafes, exfemporaneous speaking confesf, and oraforical confesf, a safisfacfory record was made. The dramafic producfions of fhe year were successes. The Associafed Sfudenfs inaugurafed a new program of infroducing freshmen fo fhe school and ifs acfivifies. A new mefhod of insfalling officers in fhe sfudenf governmenl' was adopfed af fhe spring elecfion. The award sysfem was revised in several places and a commiffee is working on furfher revisions. The curfailmenf of fhe budgef caused fhe execufive commiffee fo economize in many ways. The Associafed Sfudenfs will be under fhe leadership of Andrew Berfucci and Jean Allderdice nexl' year. Alfhough fhe pospecfs are fhaf fhe buclgef will be slashed. furfher, fhey plan a full program of sfudenf acfivifies. This group drew up a consfifufion, which, affer some alferafions, was rafified by fhe boys af large. Because of fhe li'H'le remaining fime leff in fhe firsf semesfer, fhere was lil-fle accomplished in fhe way of acfivify, buf fhe placing of fhe organizafion upon ifs feel' was considered a greaf sfride forward.
