FACULTY , , A .E E.- 4 l gb E ,J U1 H275-1351! - The Curriculum ODAY, great stress is laid on vocational training of the type that enables one to step directly from high school to a money-making career. After all, how- ever, money is not the significant factor in life. Rather is a broad understanding and appreciation of the world the thing that secures or repels success, and a classical educa- tion or training in the academic sukjects offered in high schools such as ours prepares the way for a successful life of this nature. XVhen we think of the academic subjects, English is the Hrst one that comes to mind. English teaches not only the importance of correct speaking, but also the essentials of gram-mar, punctuation, and spelling. Here also, We make the acquaintance of the best literature of the English speak- ing people. How could a life be successful or happy without toler- ance, broadmindedness, and world-wide vision? The history E - department inculcates this attitude in the student of history and civics. Science gives one a proper perspective of the relation existing between himself and the universe. With our varied courses of general science, biology, botany, physiology, household science, chemistry, and physics, We are afforded ample opportunity to grasp the vastness of things as they are. Next to English, French is almost the universal language. In our high school we are not only offered French, but Latin and Spanish are also given to the students who aspire to world-citizenship. As the older educators believed, mathematics developed the faculty of reasoning. Perhaps this is to some extent true. In this department of our curriculum, the knowledge gleaned from the mathematicians from Pythagoras to Bertrand Russell lies at our feet to be mastered and used. V Our smattering of the Hne arts consists of art and music. Here the student of special talent is taught to develop and expand his talents, to learn to appreciate the beauty in the world, as well as to add to that beauty by original work. Thus the academic work of our school does assume its responsibility of developing citizens of culture and ability. In this age of industrialism we must not pass lightly over the line of work that does so much in forming character and training mentalities. The other departments, commercial and vocational, have likewise played their part in the practical side of education. ' T The Associated Students HE Associated Students, backed by an unusually large membership, has just completed a year that has undoubtedly attained a standard set by no other high school year. This year has witnessed achievements that have been reached by hardly a class since 1917, for it has brought even national honors to Modesto High School. The national distinctions of the agriculture judging team and of the band are undoubtedly the greatest accom- plishments of the past year. Next to these honors rank the development of a star football team, the winning of the county track meet, the enlarging of the Awgwan, the ' ' championship of the Central California Debating League, and the great financial success of the two Senior plays. All this, however, could not have been realized without the loyal assistance of the community. It was they who bought the new football blankets for our varsity, it was they who made possible the agriculture team's trip east, it was they who so gener- ously subscribed to the band fund. The school has greatly appreciated the support of the merchants and townspeople. It has been the object of this year's student body officers strictly to enforce all student regulations, and hence unusual interest in student body affairs has been shown. Every time the students have been called on, they have rallied to the support of the activity in question. Modesto may well be proud of the achievements of the year, for the spirit that prompted the support of school activities has made this year an outstand- l ingly successful one.
