Class History As we, the Senior class of 155, look back over four long years of high school life, many varied and distinct memories come to our minds. We think of the banquet, a wet R.E.A. picnic, class meetings, study halls, classes, and the other thousand-and-one things that make up high school life. It all began in the fall of 1951, when ninety-odd Freshmen entered the doors of that fabulous seat of learning, Mocksville High. It didn't take us long to get settled in the daily grind of classes, and by the time we elected Evona York our class president, high school life didn't bother us a bit. On the Student Council that year repre- senting us Freshmen were Ann Kurfees and Shirley Jones. About the only other thing of importance we did that year was at Hallo- ween when Jack Jolly and Ann Kurfees were our King and Queen. They rode on a world which had signs boasting, Sitting on Top of the Worldf' The next fall a few less students answered a sophomore roll call, but our class still was large enough to give our teachers plenty of headaches. We got right down to work with- out any delay and elected Ed Rowland as our class president. Before we got settled in school, we had to interrupt the football season for Halloween. We elected Johnny Braswell and Lena Cor- natzer as our candidates, and we built a repli- ca of the front of a king's palace for our Cinderella theme. At the carnival we all worked our fingers to the bone - but it was worth it, Johnny Braswell was crowned King! On the Student Council that year helping to write the Constitution were Gail Davis and Barbara Everhart. President Harrell Powell engineered the project that created this document, but our representatives were in there with their ad- vice and help all the time. Another summer passed quickly and in the fall of 1953 an inspired group of juniors settled down to work. The reason for the inspiration? An annual affair the juniors are privileged to conduct - the R.E.A. picnic. All of us did a good bit of back-breaking labor that rainy day in the concession stand, but it had its reward-we cleared over 3300. Johnny Braswell rising to the top of the class was elected class president. Then the class chose J. C. Clontz and Doris Jones our King and Queen in preparation for the forth- coming Halloween carnival. We worked hard on the float that year! Our theme was Sleeping Beauty. It didn't win first place, only second! Giving expert advice to the Student Coun- cil members that year were our representa- tives, Marietta Rummage and Ed Rowland. Christmas soon passed that busy year, and before we knew it, banquet time was right around the corner. The class got busy, and finally settled everything about it. We took the seniors on a make-believe journey back to the days of the Old South at,Magnolia Villa fin reality the Woman's Club in Thomasvillel. Johnny Braswell, our very efficient president, was the master of ceremonies. Later that spring our first major attempt in acting was presented to an auditorium full of laughing people. Why were they laughing? Our production of 'tThe Campbells are Com- ing!' was hailed all over town as a very hilari- ous comedy - with hillbillies yet! Our class did one more thing before ad- journing for the summer. We ordered our rings. Where previous classes had stuck to red and blue stones, we branched out to the prettiest of all, black. We also changed the design on the side of the rings, placing a Wildcat there instead of a lamp of knowledge, which we figured we didn't need. Then we were seniors! How did we feel as we entered the doors of high school for the last year? There was a little sadness as we remembered all the things we would do no more, but the joy of graduating will more than make up for what we miss. To handle the important tasks that we would face we elected as our president John- ny Braswell. Then a little later Johnny won the impor- tant post of Student Council President in a heated election between Doris Jones and him- self. Ed Rowland was picked by the class to be the other senior representative on the council. At Halloween time this year we elected Eddie Waters and Alice Faye Ellis as our candidates for King and Queen. They rode in a parade on a float with a sea motif, showing to the multitudes they were truly a Pearl of a Pair. The float won second prize.. As we look back over our four years in high school, a lot of ifs crowd into our minds. But we'll never know! Because so many classes drop into obscurity soon after they leave school, we wonder if we will, or if the school will remember us. We hope they will! I arrived here at Magnolia Villa day before yesterday, and I think it is just the most wonderful resort imaginable. The town is small and sleepy, seemingly shut away from all the hurry and bustle of the outside world. I'm staying at the Log Cabin Inn, which is owned and operated by BILL TRIVETTE. My room looks out across a beautiful artificial lake bordered by stately trees. That lake is a miracle of modern engineering. When EDWARD HOOPER, the now-famous engi- neer, announced that such a lake could be built, other engineers scoffed at the idea. Hooper did build his lake, however, and gained great prestige in his chosen field. I had hardly unpacked and settled down for a nap after my trip on one of the Richard- son Air Liners QWADE RICHARDSON'S Companyj, when I heard such a banging and clattering as I never heard before. I was scared nearly out of my wits, so I called the desk clerk, MARY NELL MCCLAMROCK, to find out what was the matter. It turned out to be Mrs. R. H. Denbeigh-Charles fthe former EDRIE GREENEJ and her two young sons moving in for the summer. Thank good- ness, the youngsters spend most of their time at the Lakeside Kiddie 'Park. 'There they bother nobody but the park director, SYLVIA LAIRD. When I went down for dinner last night, whom should I meet but ANN KURFEES, 9- .bl Q, tv a who is taking a short vacation from her work as choreographer for CLARA GRAHAM CORRlHER'S new Broadway musical, Linda and the Latin, starring TROY TAYLOR and MARY TURNER. Ann tells me that sev- eral of my old friends are with the company. DREISA BARNETTE is producer, SHIRLEY JONES is director, CHARLES HENDRICKS designed the sets, and DONNA ANDERSON wrote the musical score. JANE YORK plays the Spanish senorita who moves next door, and DEANNA SILVERDIS is cast as her match-making mother. After dinner, Ann and I went out on the veranda for a quiet chat. A few feet away from us sat a distinguished-looking gentle- man reading a newspaper with a picture of Senator JOHN S. BRASWELL on the front page. The familiar look of our fellow-guest led me to ask Ann who the guest was. Ima- gine my confusion when she informed me that this was ED ROWLAND, editor of the New York Times. Think of forgetting him! This morning I drove over to Magnolia Villa itself. It is just as beautiful as ever. The preservation of Magnolia Villa as a symbol of our heritage was begun as a project of the North Carolina Historical Society, of which CAROL FORREST was, and still is, president. She was aided in her research by MARGA- RET PENDRY, State Librarian. Within a year's time architect NORMAN RIDDLE and his staff were at work on the restoration. BILL MELTON landscaped the grounds, and CONSTANCE ATWOOD was the consultant on interior decorating. The result was an his- torical shrine of breath-taking beauty and absolute authenticity. At the gate of the rail fence which sur- rounds the Magnolia Villa, I left my car to ith-1 1 lf gm attendant and allowed my- !! rn be helped into a quaint surrey, one of six donated to the Historical Society by Gen- eral GEORGE B. WINTERS. Upon reaching the magnificent mansion, I was met by the hostess, SHELBY ALLEN, who handed me a pamphlet describing Mag- nolia Villa and giving its history. Looking more closely, I saw that the pamphlet was written by ANN OWINGS, secretary of the Historical Society. I walked into the spacious hall and gazed at the painting hanging above a carved oak table. It showed a banquet at Magnolia Villa, with the gentlemen all in their very best and the ladies looking like Dresden dolls in their delicate finery. JOYCE GREEN, MARCLE THOMAS, MARIE MCDANIEL, MARY BELLE LANIER, and VIRGINIA BOGER, all of whom by the way, are happily married and living here in town, smiled out at me. How familiar the painting technique seemed! Could it really be? Yes, it was, for down in the lower right-hand corner were the tiny initials E. W. - EDWIN WATERS! Here in Magnolia Villa was the original of The Banquet - the painting that had fairly rocked modern art circles back on their heels with its daring departures from accepted styles in painting. Why, his people actually looked real, Jim! I wandered through the familiar rooms and out into the garden where BARBARA EVER- HART, one of the town's social leaders, was directing the serving of refreshments. I was so delighted with the little cakes decorated to look like Confederate flags, I asked Barbara where they were made. She said they came from MARIETTA RUMMAGEIS Bakery. J. C. CLONTZ, the mayor of Magnolia Villa, says visitors often become confused because the town and the mansion have the I : , I - V IJ J 'I s .V '41-'ri ILJVI O Ji fy, fl ffl. The town, of course, takes its name from the mansion, but a few tourists still have trouble keeping the two places separate. For instance, when DORIS JONES, Dean of Nursing at the University of North Carolina, came back to visit, she had a dif- ficult time in locating the rooms she had reserved. She was looking for them at the mansion instead of in the town. This afternoon I have been very relaxed and lazy. On my way down to the lake for a swim I met LENA CORNATZER, the fashion expert, ALICE FAYE ELLIS, the world-re- nowned jazzy pianist, and WAYNE LEON- ARD, who owns the world's largest depart- ment store. WAYNE tells me that HAROLD TRIVETTE has amassed a small fortune from his invention of a combination fly-spray and bean duster. Alice Faye said that PEGGY COOK, the hair stylist at Warner Brothers, has created a new fad with the cut she gave SHIRLEY WYATT for her latest picture, Smoke Screen. Lena added that OLA MAE COOK is having quite a job keeping Peggy's financial affairs straight during the rush. It's all she can do to count the money. We had a fine time reminiscing and gossiping. Now, I must get ready for a party BETTY SUE MESSICK is giving in my honor tonight. Betty is known far and wide as a very charm- ing and gracious hostess. I hope BETTY GREY BEAUCHAMP will be able to come. I haven't seen her since she became head of the Davie County health department. GAIL SHEEK has promised to come, even if she has to bring her three youngsters. I'm eagerly looking forward to this gathering. V11 I31'ObHb1y be back in New York by Thursday, after a short stop-over in Chicago. Expect me at rehearsal Friday morning. Yours, Evona 1 7 , X. 1 .J 'I ' i . t H 1,1 V -' , 'I' f I N 1 A h ,, .
