COMMA DI GOFFICER Captain Steven G. Smith is from Brielle, New jersey. He attended high school at Valley Forge Military Academy and is a 1969 graduate of the University of Texas, with a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Manage- ment. He has done graduate work towards a Master's Degree in World Politics at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and holds a Master's Degree in National Security Affairs and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. Following commissioning in 1969 through the NROTC Program, Captain Smith served at sea for almost ten years. Assignments included: Boilersf Electrical Officer, USS UHLMANN CDD 687j, Officer in charge of NASTY class Fast Patrol Boats CPTFD, and Seal Team Boat Officer in Vietnam while with the Naval Special Warfare Group. Subsequently he served in USS DALE CCG 195, and then as Chief Engineer of USS CLAUDE V. RICKETS C DDG SD. Assigned as Material and Combat Systems Officer on the Staff of Com- mander Destroyer Squadron Thirty One he served concurrently for several months while deployed as Oper- ations Officer of USS BUCHANAN CDDG 142. Captain Smith was Executive Officer of USS HORNE CCG 305 in 1982-1983, and Commanded USS CHANDLER C DDG 9961 from 1986 to 1988. While in Command of Chandler Captain Smith was an Ear- nest Will Convoy Commander in the Persian Gulf as well as Alternate and Sector Anti-Air Warfare Com- mander for COMIDEASTFORCE during the height of the Gulf Tanker War . Ashore, Captain Smith was a Lieutenant Commander Detailer and later Assistant Surface Captain Assign- ment Officer in the Naval Military Personnel Command between 1979-1981. From 1984 to 1986 he was the Head of Surface Warfare Officer Training and Professional Development COP-391D on the Staff of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations For Surface Warfare. Following completion of his Command Tour in 1988, Captain Smith served briefly as an Instructor at Tactical Training Group Pacific. Upon selection to Captain in 1989 he was assigned as Assistant Chief of Staff for Manpower and Personnel on the Staff of the Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet. Captain Smith has been awarded the Legion of Merit, Two Bronze Stars Cwith Combat VND, Two Meri- torious Service Medals, Three Navy Commendation Medals, the Combat Action Ribbon, and Various Cam- paignf Service Medals. Captain Smith is married to the former Kathleen Hargrave of Portland Oregon. The Smiths have two daughters, Erin Kathleen, and Kelly Kimberlee. Lb
