FREEDOM ' S FLAGSHIP — HER FIRST YEAR — In the beginning. There was little. While planning for a team. It was only through hard work. That conception. Was turned to dream. The nights were long. The days were hard. It would never end. Or so it seemed. But we pulled together. And knocked it out. Through working as a team. As we slowly grew together. It became apparent to me. That we were something special. In all that could be Yes. there ' s something unique. That you see today. With muscle as her truce. Her name the MOBILE BAY . — RMS Brian Canuel Welcome men of MOBILE BA Y. families, friends, and curious souls, to an artistic trip through the first year of Freedom ' s Flagship . Presented herein is a pictorial essay of the dedication, professionalism, and patriotism which 350 of America ' s finest have given to their ship, their Navy. and their country. This is the story of cooks, helmsmen, radar trackers, deck seamen, engineers, and technicians who collectively are MOBILE BAY and have, in but one year, transformed an inanimate object into one of the United States Navy ' s most successful and capable warships. Appropriately, this book is dedicated to the Surface Warriors known and respected as The MOB ' — CRUISE BOOK STAFF SHIP ' S HERITAGE MOBILE BA Y ' s heritage springs from the famous Civil War battle and our ship is the first Navy vessel named to commem- orate the historic clash between Union and Confederate fleets. By 1864. Mobile. Alabama was the last Gulf Coast port of major significance still remaining in Confederate hands. The only entrance to Mobile Bay was a channel running between Forts Morgan and Gaines, reduced to a width of 150 yards by Confederate mines and obstructions. Such Southern strategy forced Admiral Farragut to place his 18-ship force within easy range of Fort Morgan ' s heavy guns. Admiral Buchanan, the ranking officer of the Confederate Navy, was ordered to Mo- bile from Hampton Roads and frantically worked to organize a fleet in hopes of countering the imminent Union attack. On the morning of August 5. 1964. the mouth of the Bay was a spectacle of breathtaking magnificence. Lashed together by twos, wreathed in smoke from water to mast top. belching flame and thunder from 200 guns, the Federal fleet was run- ning the gauntlet between Morgan and Gaines. Abreast of the Fort, the monitor TECUMSEH veered from her course and dashed at the TENNESSEE. She struck a torpedo, and a terrific explosion rose above the din of the battle. The battle line broke, and ships backed up upon one another. With fire from Fort Morgan raining upon them, they tangled in the channel. Then Farragut. lashed in the rigging of the HART- FORD, damned the torpedoes and moved into the Bay at full speed ahead. For two hours Farragut s ship milled about the great iron- clad, firing broadsides into her and ramming her with their prows. Bolts that held the plating were stripped by the concus- sion, and the nuts ricocheted within the ship. The steering gear and smokestack were shot away and. at last, she lay helpless and choked with suffocating coal fumes. It was only then that the wounded Buchanan gave the order for surrender As TENNESSEE ' S colors came down, one of the most impor- tant battles in the Civil War ended. The ironclads had been defeated, marking the end for wooden warships. USS TECUMSEH sinking from torpedoes (mines) as she led Rear Adm. Farragut ' s fleet past Fort Morgan into Mobile Bay. Rear Adm. THE BEGINNING MOBILE BA Y was the sixth Aegi s cruiser produced by Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula. Mississippi. America ' s Shipyard uses efficient modular shipbuilding techniques in which the ship is built in three hull and superstructure sections. Propulsion, electronic equipment and other heavy machinery, piping, ductwork and electrical cabling are installed in the ship as sections are constructed. The ship is then moved over land via Ingalls ' wheel-on-rail transfer system, and onto the shipyard ' s launching and recovery drydock. The drydock was ballasted down and MOBILE BAY floated free. The ship was moved to her outfitting dock in preparation for and completion of outfitting and testing. The birthplace of FREEDOM ' S FLAGSHIP at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula. Mississippi, better known as GOULA. The adventure begins: MOBILE BA Y ' s keel is layed. Massive 200 ton gantry cranes gently lower the deckhouse in place. The hull is constructed in three sections which are then integrated using sophisticated laser technology- Final preparations for launching day. Heading up the Bay to Commissioning With over 800 crew and guests embarked. MOBILE BA Y departed Pascagoula on February 16 for a historic Voyage Through History enroute her commissioning site in Mobile. Alabama. As the ship transited the battleground for which she is named, crewmembers and Civil War reenactors ashore replayed the famous 1864 battle. Cannons erupted from the mighty cruiser, to be answered in kind from the Fort. As the smoke cleared, the ship ' s Honor Guard fired a gun salute and a wreath was laid to honor fallen warriors of the USS TECUM- SEH. Our unique Voyage served as an exhilerating and memorable ribbon-cutting to Commissioning Week events. Below: We ' re here. Mobile! FEB 21, 1987 COMMISSIONING In a moving, thoroughly patriotic and upbeat ceremo- ny held at the Alabama State Docks in Mobile on Satur- day. February 21. CG 53 became an active warship of the line. Before a crowd of approximately 6.000 that had braved the rather dismal weather to be on hand. MOBILE BA Y was brought to life. Complete with all the pageantry that could be mustered, the MOB pulled this one off in fine style. On hand to add to the color and crispness was the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing Band from New Orleans. Louisiana, which offered a splendid assortment of musi- cal selections throughout the day. They were assisted by the nationally-known Naval Air Training Command Choir, which was able to join us from Pensacola. Florida. As an added touch, the United States Naval Academy Color Guard joined forces with Civil War reenactors from the 21st Alabama Infantry Volunteers, and the ship ' s color and honor guards, to provide marching and display units at the ceremony. Four-oh is as low as we go! took on new meaning during the ensuing ceremony! Offering remarks on that day was a host of distinguished naval and civilian leaders including the Honorable Mel- vin R. Paisley. Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Re- search. Engineering and Systems: Vice Adm. William Rowden. Commander. Naval Sea Systems Command: Vice Adm. Joseph Metcalf III. Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Surface Warfare): Rear Adm. David Bennett. Deputy Commander Naval Surface Force. U.S. Atlantic Fleet: Six thousand proud Americans brave the February frost to see MOBILE BA Y come alive! Rear Adm. Denton reviews the MOB Honor Guard. Men of MOBILE BAY. man your ship! President. Ingalls Shipbuilding Division and Senior Vice President of Litton Industries. The prin- cipal address was given by Rear Adm. Jeremiah A. Denton. Jr.. USN (Ret.), a true patriot and national hero in every sense of the word. Admiral Denton ' s stirring remarks were followed by his reading of the commissioning directive, at which time MO- BILE BA Y officially joined the active fleet. Shortly thereafter came the setting of the first watch and the subsequent manning of the ship by all hands, an event which we were happy to see and which brought many a tear of joy to the eyes of our loved ones. The program continued with the Command- ing Officer ' s remarks, which were followed by the words of Mrs. Jane Denton, the ship s Sponsor and honorary ship ' s mom. At the conclusion of her remarks. Mrs. Denton unveiled a large bronze cast- ing which commemorated the famous Civil War battle from which the ship draws her name. The Reverend Ralph E. Wiechmann concluded the cere- mony by offering the benediction. From there, it was on to the post commissioning receptions, one pierside and one at the Municipal Auditorium. Lat- er that evening, the crew continued to celebrate with a sumptuous banquet at the Riverview Plaza Hotel in Mobile. TOP LEFT: MOBILE BA Ys first watch march toward their post. MOBILE, ALABAMA Mobile s Mardi Gras must be seen to be believed. It was a storybook week, complete with a band and fair maidens. Our arrival in Mobile was a sight to behold. We were graced with the duty of Mardi Gras flagship, and the city really made the MOB feel welcome from the first minute. Native Mobilians made us all feel like family; there is no doubt that Mobile was our number one port visit of 1987. MOBILE BA Y proceeded directly to Guantanamo Bay. Cuba, for three weeks of shakedown training in preparation for upcoming Shock Trials. After pass- ing through a severe winter storm, which quickly made sailors out of the pre-com crew, we arrived in Cuba to conduct around-the-clock engineering and damage control exercises, punctuated by weekend sporting events against other Navy ships undergoing refresher training. Our engineering team quickly jelled and MOBILE BA Y became the first Navy ship on record to successfully complete accelerated engineering qualification so rapidly after commissioning. Our lime at Gitmo proved to be a great operational start for the MOB. setting a high standard of excellence for future challenges. Underway for another day of drills. OPPE certified 21 days after commissioning: an engineering clean sweep !!! Sorry guys . . no riders Sun, fun. the strip , bikini contests, and more sun! Fort Lauder- dale provided Gitmo and OPPE — weary MOBsters with four days of R S R in early April. This port was. for a majority of the crew, the first exposure to the Florida lifestyle. Fort Lauderdale has traditionally been the Mecca of Spring Break bound college students from the north, and MOBsters found nothing lacking in nightlife, beaches, or enter- tainment facilities. While most crewmembers rested their weary bones on the beach with a cold beer and a warm bottle of Coppertone. others sought out golfing, diving, biking, jet skiing, and water skiing as a way to unwind after four long weeks of 18-hour days. Naturally, the duty sections found time to hold tours for several thousand interested sightseers. So. while MOBsters were busy enjoying the local atmosphere, the locals were equally as busy learning about the Aegis cruiser ' s awesome capabilities. It ' s twice as good and twice as cold this way. Florida, on April I 7. complete with all the pageantry that could be mustered. CCDG 12 and USS YOSEMITE. who served as host ship , joined forces to sponsor a most memorable welcoming of the MOB to Mayport. As she sailed in. MOBILE BA Y was joined by a small armada of fire tugs, who hailed her arrival with multiple geysers of colored water. A band filled the air with music as the crew busily doubled lines in preparation to host their families and friends aboard Mayport s Aegis Cruiser. The food service staff prepared a bountiful array of cakes, cookies, and the like for all the ship ' s guests. At long last, the crew could say they were home! I wonder if that sign on the building saying ' Welcome to Charleston ' means anything . . . hmmmmm ... The (our complex tests conducted completed over a year of heavy preparations by the crew in readying both ship and men for these dramatic detonations. Since the effects of shock on ship equipments cannot be fully demonstrated in a laboratory, the Navy conducts peri- odic full-scale testing to ensure its vessles are battle-worthy. During all detonations, which were carefully controlled to prevent injury, the crew was at fighting stations conducting operations in all of MOBILE BA Y ' s many mission areas. Following the explosions, the crew worked feverishly for a set period of time to restore equipment. Our months of intensive training paid off handsomely with both cruiser and crew demonstrating strength superior to any warship in the world. We knew we had a tough ship, but these challenging trials showed us exactly how tough she really is! Trial results will be analyzed by the Navy, but it is already clear that MOBILE BA Y set new standards of excellence in a very demanding trial which will have significant payoffs to the readiness of the Surface Navy in the years ahead. Several years of effort, including hun- dreds of thousands of man-hours, went into preparation for shock trials, held in May and June 1987 off the coast of Cape Canaveral. After shaking, rattling, and rolling through four successively closer and more dramatic explosions. MOBILE BAY came through with flying colors. Af- ter the fourth shot , the crew, along with the civilian Shock Trials Team, gathered on the pier for a group picture with the real star of the trials — USS MOBILE BAY (CG 53). Hey Senior Chief! After a brief weekend visit to Naval Station Nor- folk, the MOB headed up the river to Norfolk ' s Magnetic Silencing Facility for the arduous process of deperming. Degaussing is the system onboard which coun- teracts the magnetic signature of MOBILE BA Y ' s steel hull to make it safe from magnetic mines. It is only effective, however, when the ship has first been depermed and had that signature permanent- ly reduced as much as possible. After mooring the ship between the two wooden docks forming the deperming crib, the ship ' s force divided into 20 lOman teams for the process of hauling thick, heavy, and muddy, insulated copper cables up and over the entire ship — every 10 feet — from the foc ' sle to fan tail. ' t Ship ' s teams worked through heat, mosqui- toes, and lack of sleep, making the connections that would carry thousands of amps of current over the entire ship during the actual deperming process. The cables were then systematically energized and deenergized over a 24-hour peri- od to actually complete the process- After unrigging, and some fine tuning of the degaussing system, the MOB went on to com- plete satisfactory runs of the test range, much to the relief of all involved. As much fun as it was to haul those heavy, slimy, cables, no one really wanted to do it again! NORFOLK, VA . T . Below: We love the smell of slime in the morning! U.S.N.A. Following MOBILE BA Y ' s weekend in Norfolk for deperming. the ship proceeded up the Chesapeake Bay for a three-day visit to the United States Naval Academy (USNA) at Annapolis. Maryland. During Parent ' s Weekend approximately 5.000 moms and dads, brothers and sisters, and girl friends of first-year midshipmen came to visit on a weekend that signifies the conclusion of summer indoctrination training — more famously known as PLEBE SUMMER.- During the ship s visit. MOBILE BA Y also hosted specialized tours to USNA alumni from the Class of ' 38. Westinghouse engineers. David Taylor Research and Development Center engineers, and ship ' s engineers from NAVELEX. We also had a chance to tour nearby Washington D.C. and compete against Academy sports teams. It was a great port visit. Above-. MOBsters hit the courts against Academy midshipmen. COMBAT SYSTEMS TRIALS Following the northern swing to Norfolk and Annapolis. MOBILE BA Y moved on to her next workup milestone of two months of Combat Systems testing and trials in Mayport. the Bahamas, and in the Caribbean. Included in the three- week inport phase was a LAMPS mobile trainer. Naval Gunfire Support (NGFS) mobile team training, missile data analysis training, weapons system grooms, combat system alignments, inport anti-submarine warfare (ASW) testing and numerous briefs in preparation for missile, torpedo, and gun firings. MOBILE BA Y got underway Sept. S enroute AUTEC. for torpedo firings and operations with LAMPS Mk III helicopters from HSL 44. The ASW attack teams did a super job. completing all competitive requirements for the ASW A Excellence Award. Next came Close-in Weapons System (CIWS) firings, anti-air tracking excersises. 5 gun shoots at surface targets and naval gunfire support at Vieques Island. It was then on to preparations for Anti-air warfare scenarios wherein the MOB would fire a total of nine missiles. The end result was truly outstanding as MOBILE BA Y downed all nine targets in an impressive display of firepower and teamwork. We coined ourselves the Boola Boola Gang after learning of our 9 for 9 . Following missile events, the electronic warfare technicians put their equipment and talents to work during numerous chaff and active jamming exercises. CSSQT concluded with an exciting eight-hour integrated Combat Systems exercise similar to the shootout at the OK Corral. The 66 steps were carved from soUd rock by slaves in St. Thomas. The beautiful port of Charlotte Amalie pro- vides the gateway to St. Thomas. Following CSSQJ. MOBILE BA Ys port cal ls in Puer- to Rico, St. Thomas. Virgin Islands, and Nassau. Baha- mas, was a schedule most cruise ships would envy. Island tours, diving and snorkeling trips, golf, and sports competitions were organized. For most MOBsters, it was the first visit to these Caribbean retreats so sightseeing and shopping for souvenirs were popular pastimes. In the midst of all the entertainment and relaxation in Nassau. MOBILE BA Y sailors provided volunteer assistance to a local children ' s emergency hostel. Over 75 MOBsters volunteered for minor carpentry and plumbing repairs, interior and exterior painting, and some major yard work. Materials, as well as la- bor, were provided by the MOB and an afternoon cookout was a real treat for the orphans. Our volun- teers left with that feeling of satisfaction which comes with knowing you have unselfishly helped someone in need. Below: Freedom ' s Flagship gently rides the hook off St. Thomas. Cleanest ship seen . . most complete CSMP found by the Board in seven years . most profes- sionally run Supply Department witnessed in two years . . . Auxiliary Division best ever inspected Such were representative comments made by members of the Washington Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) during their December 1987 Final Contract Trial (FCT) inspection of MOBILE BAY. Headed by Rear Adm. John D. Bulkeley. the Board conducted MOBILE BAYs FCT as the final settlement point for the cruiser ' s construction con- tract. Essentially. FCT INSURV is an in-depth, mi- croscopic snapshot of how well ship ' s force is maintaining their billion dollar warship. And. as we have throughout our first year, the MOB came away in top flight style. INSURV is one of the most arduous challenges a ship faces and the superb results received by MO- BILE BA Y were produced by incredible MOBpower which, once again, set the standard. And this is where we hide the oily rags. FINAL CONTRACT How many OBA canisters will I need??? No, no, no there. I liked it much better over The MOB goes out to strut her stuff. Deployments have included five to the Mediterranean, three to South and Central America, and one to the Persian Gulf. Ashore. Captain Whalen has been assigned to the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington and to the United States Naval Academy on two occasions, most recently from 1983 to 1985 as the Director of Professional Development. He is a distinguished graduate of Naval Destroyer School in Newport. Rhode Island and the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia. He holds a Master ' s Degree in Business from the George Washington University. On the personal side. Captain Whalen has been actively involved as a youth soccer coach at all levels in several states.
