x w Practical nursing provides an opportunity for men and womenof all ages to acquire skills, and knowledge that will enable them to bring both physical and mental comfort ,to the sick and injured. - Practical nurses are important members of the hospital staff and are capable of working side by side with the professional nurse and the phy- sician. They 'have not been preparedi or oriented to carry out the duties of the professional nurse. Rather, they are preparedand eager to carry out nursing duties that are relatively free from scientific complexities, and to assist the professional nurse in: the care of the acutely ill. This program consists of a varietylof courses. Some of these courses include clinical experience, anatomy, nutrition, 'medical-surgical nursing, psychiatric nursing, health, vocational relations, nursing funda- mentals, obstetrics, pediatrics, and growth and development. Two weeks inljune are spent at the Yanktoni State Hospital gaining experience in psychiatric nursing. ' 98
