First-year students learn the basic principles of accounting and may graduate upon completion of the courseg or they may return to school after stunmer vacation and enroll in the second year program. Accounting II students learn the reasons, methods, and theory behind their basic accounting knowledge. This background coupled with several management courses provides the basis for an accounting or management position. Class activities include: an occasional field trip, Christmas carol- ling, sponsoring one of the many dances or other school activities, and intramural basketball and volleyball. The first week of school, the Ag classes sponsored a picnic to get everyone acquainted. During the fall and winter, they participated in intremural basketball and volleyball. While taking courses on raising hogs and cattle, the classes toured the different farms around Mitchell viewing the different methods of raising them. Many ideas were acquired when touring. They went to judg- ing schools in Huron and won second place in the horse judging class. They also helped with the Mitchell Area Ag Expo. The second year students have been taking trips to the National Livestock Show in Denver for the past three years. Various field trips to observe different farming operations of related businesses also help on our + program to increase our knowledge of modern agriculture. The last quarter of the year was spent on overhauling and tuning up small engines. To break the monot- ony of school, the two ag classes sponsored a 50's dance which was a great success. Producing Competent Technicians in Architectural-Building Architectural-Building finds its greatest expression in residential and com- mercial building, and although it is one of the oldest of arts, its basic principles have changed little with the passing of time. A man may build however his fancy may dictate. For this reason, practically every building has it series of problems. The main objective of the two-year program is to produce a compe- tent technician in the field of Architectural-Building. The first year program is divided equally between the drafting and building construction. The students are taught basic drawing techniques and progress into a multipaged complete set of working drawings for a residential structure. The efforts in the construction shop mesh closely with those in the drawing room. Many of the drawings completed by the students are used as actual plans for the building projects. Usually, each year the students will complete four to six single stall garages and one three-bedroom residential building. The second year objective is to apply the theory learned in the first year to practical work-a-day laboratory and onsite experiences. Concrete and masonry skills will be taught to build a foundation for the framing skills learned the ,,, prior year. A three-bedroom home will be completed onsite from foundation to , f' cabinets. In addition, the students will complete a commercial building plan ' and receive survey courses in the fields of engineering, electricity, pltunbing, and heating plus taking surveying, welding, retail management and building estimating courses of smdy. Members of the class toured the john Deere Plant in Waterloo, Iowa, and various business places in Mitchell. The class sold chances on how long an old Olds- mobile would nm at full throttle. A large crowd turned out to Watch as the car died after about seven minutes. Every year plymouth sponsors a Trouble Shooting contest for high school and post-high teams. The VoTech team accompanied by advisor Jerry Buch- holz, attended the contest at Bismark, North Dakota, where a team from North Dakota Vo- Tech won. The 9- month course prepares the student with the skills and knowledge necessary for a job in the baking industry. The baking student is trained in the production of bread, rolls, coffee cakes, and yeast raised fried products using manual and machine methods as used in retail baking. They are taught how to mix and bake a variety of cakes and pastries using standard equip- ment of the approved type to produce quality baked pastry products. Part of the industry is devoted to the artistic and creative abilities of peopleg such as the development of new porducts and the creation of decorated cakes for all occasions. The students of the Commercial Baking class earned money for a field trip to Rapid City by holding a Bake Sale. Scholarships were awarded to several of the students by different associations and companies. , aa-as-its 58 V fF.JkN3'r I i 7' , Av . .r' lrf V' XXN, ,iff 'sffgl T , V - 3 83, sa- up BELOW LEFT-Johny Porter. They 'have not been preparedi or oriented to carry out the duties of the professional nurse. Rather, they are preparedand eager to carry out nursing duties that are relatively free from scientific complexities, and to assist the professional nurse in: the care of the acutely ill. This program consists of a varietylof courses. Some of these courses include clinical experience, anatomy, nutrition, 'medical-surgical nursing, psychiatric nursing, health, vocational relations, nursing funda- mentals, obstetrics, pediatrics, and growth and development. Two weeks inljune are spent at the Yanktoni State Hospital gaining experience in psychiatric nursing. ' 98 Q Yi' I l X I V . 4 ' ,I 11- wx I ' Y' , V M. , . . , N ,, Y 1' ' -,V M ., ,, ,. ,, . The following operations can be performed completely by the combination Welder: Oxyacetylene Cut- ting, Oxyacetylene Welding and Brazing, Electric Arc Welding, and Inert Gas Welding. Industrial expansion in many industries insures maximum employment for many years to come. The employment outlook for qualified Welders is very bright. The demand for certified welders in fabrication and small job shops is increasing. Taking further training for positions in their jobs, and keeping up with advancements in their field are some of the quali- ties of the certified welder. The welding program provides training in various types of welding in the horizontal, vertical, flat and over- head position on common metalsiused today. Welding instruction provides practical application in the welding shop, welding theory in the classroom, and field trips to Sioux Falls and Yanlcton. 1. P ' - J. ' X. D 17' I 4 3 .
