' I - , ' ' 0 , . 4 A Day in M.H. . M Juana- 'L A trip around our world in one of our typical one hundred eighty days begins with a view of our classmates as they finish those last minute conversations while hurrying to reach roll rooms before the 8:07 tardy bell. We will recall the opening hour of the day with warm tenderness as we look back on it. Even though it is almost time for the bell there is yet a moment to stop by the lockers to hang up coats and get books. We pause long enough to admire the latest fad in senior cords. The more serious minded may even discuss the latest Explorer, sputnik, or trips to outer space. These and many other earth -shaking events are of in- terest to us in this 1957-58 school year. 6 On clear, cool mornings musical notes flow through the gymnasium windows to us in our roll rooms. We dreamily listen to the melodious sounds until we are brought back to a more material world by the ringing of the bell. Mitchell has a good band, and we do ap- preciate the fine performances it gives at basketball games and other school and community functions. ,,.,.-lui ' This is not Grand Central Station but a usual scene in the high school office at 8 a.m. as we clamor for a lunch ticket, absence slip, or perhaps just a pencil and paper before taking off for a first period class. Driver's Education Class offered a brand new type of instruction to students in MHS this year. Using a car provided by Fitch Chevrolet, members of the class learned the do s as well as the don I s of good driving The ever important goal was that of securing a driver s license in course of time What's cooking? That is our question as we assemble in the lunch line in the high school cafeteria. Again we have oppor- tunity for the sociability which is an im- portant phase of our school life. We do experiments, collect leaves, dissect frogs, and peer into microscopes as we learn about forms of life. We recognize our de- pendence on living things and have a better appreciation of the world about us. We learn to earn in business education classes. General business, office practice, bookkeeping, shorthand, and typing are of- fered in this department. Office practice students assist in the high school office and also do clerical work for teachers. iw hh Do you have a new book on satellites and rocket ships? Where can I find material on the United Nations? With increased student interest in science and in world peace, these are typical questions presented to the school librarian. Q' Vocational classes give us skill inqusing wood -working equipment. 3:15 p.m. Schoo1's out! At the sound of the final bell, we scatter in a hundred different directions. few of us remain at school to do extra- curricular work. Many rush off to part- time jobs where they learn early the dif- ficulties of wage earning. However, most of us start for home. Much of the senior work is done through committees. Here a committee is busily engaged in choosing commencement in- vitations. We dreamily dance with our newest sweetheart at the Valentine dance sponsored by the Tri-Hi-Y and Hi-Y clubs. Our Class History In September, 1954, one hundred twenty students began their freshman year in Mitchell High School. Most of us were not familiar with the surroundings, but in a few days we were at home. Our sponsors for that year were Miss Claudia Francisco and Mr. William Shepherd. At our first class meeting we chose the following officers: Hugh McNeely, presidentg Freeman Lee, vice-presidentg Judy Daugherty, secretary-treasurer. In October we chose Marilyn Pruett as our Fun Frolic candidate. Lorena Hughes was our representative for Homecoming Queen. As we entered our sophomore year, one hundred sixteen of us continued our studies. Our selection for class of ficers was as follows: Roy Smith, president, Merle Wilson, vice-presidentg Judy Daugherty, secretary-treasurer. We nominated Dolores Blanton for our Fun Frolic candidate and Theresa Cummings for Homecoming Queen candidate. During this year the Tri -Hi-Y was organized. Several of the girls in our class were charter members. At the beginning of our junior year Hugh McNeely was elected our presidentp Larry Brown, vice -presidentg Sharon Holsapple, secretaryg Judy Daugherty, treasurer. When we received our class rings, it was one of our happiest experiences in high school. Alta Matrix was selected as our candidate for the Fun Frolic and Winifred Julian for Homecoming Queen. In the early days of November the members of the class with a flair for acting donned overalls and false whiskers and applied grease paint for the presentation of the rollicking three act comedy, GABRIEL BLOW YOUR HORN, under the direction of Mr. Wright. The smoldering thought that persistently dwelled in our minds for the first few weeks erupted into blazing action when we began preparations for the long anticipated event, Junior-Senior Prom. The theme of the prom was Underwater Wonderland. It was carried out in the decorating of the dining room and lounge at Spring Mill Inn. We danced to the music of Boyd Bennett. At the opening of school this year the seniors chose as their officers: Hugh McNeely, presidentg Adrian Slone, vice-presidentg Sharon Holsapple, secretaryp Janice Isom, treasurer. During the last part of September and October, the class started working on many different projects so they could win the Fun Frolic. The night of the Fun Frolic our queen candidate, Janice Isom, was crowned by the president of our class, Hugh McNeely. Sharon Holsapple was our selection for Homecoming Queen candidate. As we enter the big outside world we shall always remember our world at Mitchell High School. Miss Beldon and Mrs. Newman, senior sponsors, discuss plans for the Curtis magazine subscriptions campaign. Sports in a World of Competition Spirit .rntl enthusiasni are contagious, especially when they are spresti by the Bluegackzets' cheerleotlers and Boosrer Club. The cheerleaders are Qlefr to righty Carolyn Ewing, Imogene Burris, and Judy Roberrs. The Boosters Club is ui new cheering crganiustien, which was introduced to M.H.S. this year. The group gre to one hundred in nienibership even before rlie year was ended. Sitting in a special section, the boosters attend url home games rind as many out- of-:oryn genres as possible. The chorus members wear formal dress for this occasion. The most demanding work, musically, is the district Choral Festival, held each year at one of the eight schools in the district. Mitchell was host to the festival in 1950 and 1957. Alternate years the vocal music department presents an operetta--in 1952, Gypsy Roverg in 1954g Roses of the Danubeg in 1956, Meet Arizona. Under consideration, for 1958, in Medics and Merriment, or Fortune-teller, by Herbert. Both the Boys Chorus and the Girls Chorus are training groups, giving students opportunity to partici- pate in the festivals and other school activities. They accept invitations to sing for community civic groups as well as school assemblies. Boys Chorus FIRST ROW,qLeft to Righty: Billie Potts, Edward Quinn. SECOND ROW' Mike Henderson Ronnie Neel .
