Dedication To Standing majestically amid the old and new buildings on the Mitchell Community College campus is the gigantic tree known as the Circle Oak. Estimated to be over one hundred years old, the tree perhaps was here when the school was named the Concord Female College. If it could speak, what stories it could tell! It is said that General Stoneman bivouacked his Union troops beneath the tree's spreading branches on his raid through Statesville during the Civil War. Many May Queens have been crowned under the lovely old oak, perhaps some of the first wearing high collars and high buttoned shoes. How many students have passed beneath its branches? The tree has been known to students since the time that school uniforms were mandatory. In 1932, when Mitchell College became co-educational, the oak tree saw the first male students, numbering five, pass beneath it. The oak has witnessed the school's many name changes from the original Concord Female College to Mitchell Community College in 1973 when it became part of the community college system. The oak has been a part of our past, but we are concerned now about its future. On Sunday, September 10, 1978, the tree was struck by a bolt of lightning which peeled strips of bark from its top limbs to the base of its trunk. The tree is under the care of tree surgeons, but spring must arrive before the fate of the Circle Oak can be determined. Many of us here at Mitchell will be anxiously awaiting the first buds of springtime on our old friend. It is with pride in our past and hope for our future that we dedicate the 1978-79 CIRCLE to our oldest friend, the Circle Oak.
