President Robert C. Weller I've been told that the song Blowin' in the Wind gives title to the theme of this yearfs Log. Any particular version of the song CI happen to like Peter, Paul, 8a Mary'sj calls up different possibilities about what the title means to each of us. I suppose there's a whole spectrum of meanings, starting with those showing a strong trace of gloom and a venting of wrath, somewhat in the style of the prophet, Amos, who continually asked: How long, Lord'?,, And extending over to the more positive and constructive prophecies of a Samuel. The title brings to mind the idea of a ship, too, running before the wind, a creature balanced between man and nature, dependent on the wind for movement but upon the helmsman for direction. The ship is like an idea, a solution for a problem. Itfs out there, blowing free, running free, needing a helmsman to steer so as to capture the elusive puff, so as to keep the ship on a trim course toward its destination. The College has been like the compass that tells the man at the helm which way to steer. We tried to give you both true and magnetic courses toward your destination. Now it's up to you to reach out for that elu- sive, magic puff, that propelling thrust, so that you, too, may sail beyond the sunset and the baths of all the western stars? That calls for the sturdiness and hope of a Samuel, not the gloom and despair of an Amos. QM monte,
