My HOUSE My house is built of quiet footsteps, cautious imprints on the dust of long-dead ghosts. Out of some smoldering fear - we tread in awe of them, we measure our movements N carefully, ' r and dare a few words between us only now and then. My. house i A - s lives in silent shadows ' grown in dark corners of the master bedroom draped .across each expectant doorway, and collected on the cobwebbed family bible. In the attic . can be heard the soft remains b of stifled whimpers settled among my grandmother's lace, Q packed away forever in some forgotten padlocked truck. My house moves as I do, ' and sometimes, ' when the air is still, I feel the chill within me. I Doug Frost

NIGHT ON THE ALLAGASH RIVER y I paddle beneath , the ebony sky, ' f I 1 flecked- with chips of white X starlight that glimmer ' on the dark water, pleated with smooth folds that disappear in . the liquid glass as my boat passes on. Momentarily, stillness draped lightly over all, is sworled away in the wash of my paddle, but silence returns, and again the stillness settles over all. Time ,passes and the dark tangles of clouds A mingling with the , moonlight, become bright 1 patches of lace and angel hair, wisping silently around y the silver sphere and on into the night. Black trees fringing the shore in legions of sleeping silhouettes, stand silently and pose in the picture of the peaceful, dark, , and silent stillness , of the Allagash. A. P. Visco
