The lonely gull flies overhead, His serene journey never sped, While friends gather in silent thought Cf memories earned - but never bought. Silence, the essence of quiet thought Preserves the goodness the day has brought. Days are lost like waves to the shore But each dawn brings new things to explore Worlds of people where minds tend to meet To share the burdens of Life's bittersweet. Sunset, omen of a coming dawn, Leaves with the promise of a new day's song -a joint effort- s.n.j. a.m.e. m.h.d. , ww. .,....Y-H 1 all-4 , 32 Q53 1 V ,A wg, 1 f -. The SGA was alive this year and we DO have things to PROVE it. There is not room here for more than a summary, so a sum- mary this shall be. It was the SGA that racked up the bike racks. The SGA pushed for repaired sidewalks, and reserv- ed parking for handicapped students, and got them. Fif- teen minute parking privileges were extended to students-the SGA was behind it. Remember the liberalization of book store sales? The SGA was in the middle of it. No pay for add-drops, a 50'Z: cut for transcript fees-you didn't mind that, did you? No one thanked the SGA. Now, there is some unfinished business-an improved pass-fail system, student faculty evaluation, and a new book for what was once a drab student directory fthis last item for free.j The new people will pick up the strings from here. Silence-the night burns like tears dammed behind clenched lids. Wait for Me Alison Williams I took my dog for a walk today. February was pretending to be April, and the wind promised to sweep away all the winter in my mind. Cars passed me, taking people to mothers, husbands, lovers, a paperboy smiled at me, his empty bag even lighter because he was going home. A little boy on a big bicycle rode to the corner and returned, content within his boundaries. His mother's restrictions made him free. Even my goddam dog had somewhere to go. So I choked him, he coughed, and had to go my way. My way. Actually, it was embarrassing. I should have been along for the ride. running to catch up with the dog, instead of restraining him to the slow rhythm of my walk. I walked in ever-widening gyres like Yeats' turning falcon, but I didn't even have a falconer- no one follows me. even with their eyes. Administration It began with breakfast P 4 then rehearsal and, finally, the great event . . . GRADUA TION ii ,QT 3 N I 6 X.-MZ' May 16 marked a most important day at MWSC. The graduates were ending their years as students, and honors filled the day to emphasize the event. The MWSC Alumni Association hosted a breakfast at the College Center. Rear Admiral Herschel J. Goldberg of the Junior College Class of '31 addressed the guests on the subject, Wfhe Winds of Change. He urged the graduates to get into government. After a reception, the graduates took their places in the processional. Missouri Senator Thomas F. Eagleton, guest of honor for the evening, addressed the several thousands at- tending on various political topics. Eagleton urged citizen participation as essential to the survival of democracy. X. ag 3 . I , VH' gs MWSC awarded 529 degrees at this year's Commencement. Forty-four students graduated with honors. Martha Moody of Plattsburg graduated summa cum laude with a perfect 4.0 four-year record. Susan K. Allen of Cameron and Mary Reno of Pattonsburg earned highest honors with a 3.9 grade point average. Ten students, with 3.75 to 3.8 grade point averages, were awarded magna cum laude degrees. These were Denise Bartles, Mary Ann Bokay, William G. Brown, Mark Hendrickson, Carol Jean Hill, Lois Merritt Kraft, and Louis Zeltner- all of St. Josephg Lois J. Dick, Kansas City, Mo., Sherrill Frankhauser, Cosby, and Donna Jackson, Maysville. Thirty students, with 3.5 to 3.74 grade point averages, earned cum laude degrees. Unique this year was a posthumous honorary degree presented to the daughters of DeSoto McCabe, Sr., who died February 23 while pursuing studies toward his bachelor's degree. f ' , if H U Sf ..,yy.y 3, fl' Af-my 4 From the president . . . The academic year 1973-74 at Missouri Western State College was significant for many reasons, not least of which was that more degrees-529-were awarded during this period than ever before in the institution's history. But more importantly, perhaps the year will be one to remember not for the degrees awarded, but for the students who received them. These men and women are the students who helped Missouri Western State College grow during its formative years, who have helped mold our college, who have left their indelible influence on the direc- tion MWSC will take in the years to come. To paraphrase the words of the late Sir Winston Churchill, 1973-74 for the graduating class may have been the beginning of the end of their formal educationg but for Missouri Western State College their departure marks the end of our new beginning as a state four- year college. -Dr. Marvin O. It's a great feeling to fling the last load of deadlines across the mail counter. lt makes you want to climb a flagpole, jog up and down a mountain ridge, or tum-Q ble into a haystark and let the laws of gravity take control. But after the fling comes reflection. This is our second year as editors. The first book was a toss up, in our opinion, but it provided experience. The 1973-74 GRIFFON is an improvements---at least we feel comfortable, and it was more fun doing it. Next year's book is already in the planning. Hopefully, it will be even better and involve greater sudent participation. We are excited about it. We look upon our work as a service. But remember that your education gives you a pair of tongs which enables you to grasp firmly the job op- portunities in our technological society-a pair of tongs that enables you to wrest from the world the rewards that yield only to those who hold on tight and persevere. lt's true that you might be able to bend pieces of metal with your bare hands if you struggled long enough and hard enough. but why not add a pair of tongs. and maybe even a hammer? Then the same amount of ef- fort will yield far greater re- sults.
