COLLINS, Athletic Director Success in athletics has been the rule at Wesleyan since the Coming of Coach Hollins. This year his football team suc- c-eeded in obtaining the title of Missouri Union Champions. Coach Collins and the regard with which he is his men are large factors in this His track team was second in College himself held by sur-cess. M. C. A. FOSTER POLAND Assistant Coach, Football Ning was one of the few quarterbacks who could do everything that was expected of him. This year he was engaged in teaching the boys some of his old tricks. He deserves much credit for helping turn out a Championship team. U59 CAPTAIN lVHlPl?LE, L. H. Captain XVhi.pple proved to be a good leader. With that never say die spirit he encouraged the men to iight 'till the last. CAPTAIN-ELECT GRANTHAM, R. ll. Grantham was chosen by his teammates to lead next years team. He is a great defensive man and is a deadly spiker. He can always be relied upon for a gain through the line. His knowledge of the game will make him a valuable leader. RALPH HULSE, L. T. A pretty spiker, a deadly taekler and a hard hitter, that's Hulse. He was a man who used his head as well as his body and for his good work was awarded an all state position. Farmer has played his last game for Wesleyan. YVILLIAM GILCHRIST, R. T. One year at guard, two at center and his last year at tackle is the record ofi'Gi1ehrist. Billy is a lighter and will be missed by the next year team. C167 YVILLIAM MOCULLOUGH, G. Billy plays at either guard or tackle. He can be depended upon to get his man. He has one more year at Wesleyan. RALPH PARKS, L. E. Toad plays an end position and does it well. He was placed on the all state team by Missouri sport writers. He is big and fast and as a pass catcher he cannot be beaten. CARRUL HENDERSON, C. Zip'i plays center using his 190 pounds to a good advantage. His edurfated toe brings many points to the Owls He has one more year to be with us. GOLDIIC BOURETTE, G. B. Sport writers c-all him a jagged streak of lightning but Jewell now thinks of him as a complete electric-al storm. Hisbroken iield run- ning is a feature and as a Held general he is hard to beat. He has one more year to go. JAMES SHULTZ, II. B. This was Jin11ny's fourth and last year. For three years he has made the all statteg 2 years at guard and the other at half. A broken leg in the Westminster game kept him out the rest of the season. FRANK2 sieiicrmnn, L. E. p Sliei-ard made good at an end position. He played good ball the first of the season but sickness kept him out the last part. -1 4203 Review of Football Season 1925 The Missouri lVesleyan Football team got off to what at first appeared to be a bad start, losing the first game Ca non-conference encounterj to Kan- sas Wesleyan University, played at St. Joseph. The losing jinx followed the team to Vtfarrcnsburg, where it was defeated by the State Teachers College. WVhen the real season opened and the conference games began, the jinx was left behind, and it soon became apparent that a championship team had emerged from the Missouri Valley encounter, leaving the latter with the small end of a 21 to 0 score. Then tl1e conference games began to fall into 'Wesleyan possession one by one. Central College came with a large band, but went home smarting from a 28 to 0 defeat. VVestminster was defeated at Fulton in a nerve racking game which was finished after dusk. Tarkio was the next victim of the Wesle5'an's march toward victoryi The game with Kirksville Osteopaths resulted in a win for Wesley'an. Then came the crowning conflict of the season, the clash with our ancient rival VVilliam Jewell. As dusk fell over the campus, the VVesleyan heroes found themselves the undisputed champions of the Missouri College Union, SCHEDULE FOR 1925 Score Score Jackson University . In team work they were very eccentric, sometimes rising to the heights of perfection and then going down tothe depths. Ati the first of the season the team had dificulty in scoring. The team- work was good but their ability to hit the basket was nil. Thus a few games were lost. VVit'h the beginning of the second semester, McKee took the center posi- tion and the Collins aggregation began t-o run more smoothly. The Rolla Miners were the first win for the team, several other victories following shortly after. The road trip proved very successful t-o the VVesleyan team which won four of its six games. It was a real test to make this trip as all parts of the state were vis-ited, the team also spending a day in St. Louis. Capt. Hulse, Dague, Greenwood, and O'Neal alternated at foreward posi- tions performing in faultless style. McKee and Lower at center were both good men. McKee joined us the last semester and exerted all his energy to produce a winning team. Lower, a hard fighter alternated at foreward. At guard positions were, Whipple, Grantham and Mill-er. All these men were good shots as well as defensive men, many a long shot being ma-de from the center of the court by -one of these men. Hulse and Whipple are the only men lost to next years squad by gradu- ation. Vtfith the other old men back and the addition of new material we are 9XP9C'Ei11g a good showing next year. w ' -Ni L W' V' in i xi ll 1237 E , Palmer . . Camden Point . Platte Cellege . Their record was that of winning nine out of eleven games played. ' They started the season With 'a bang, Winning the iirst five games easily, no team seeming able to bother them. January 30, in Goodrich Gymnasium one of the most hotly contested games of the season was fought with the Maryville State Teachers College. The first three quarters the teams played to a tie, but then with their super- ior team Work the visitors Won. Again later in the season the Red Jackets lost to the Maryville team. 4 Much credit for the team is due to the tireless efforts ot? Coach Slayton. For three years he has Worked with the girls and developed a team of cham- pionship caliber. Credit is also due to the girls on the second team. It was their fighting spirit which kept the first team in trim. No team can be produced without opposition, the stronger the opposition, the stronger the team, We are proud of our second team. ' Losing only Captain Shepherd by graduation and With the host of vet- erans led by Ruby Daniel, Coach Slayton has much to look for next year. ' ' 11,.l,.fl4 iv!! TY! C255 u, lil E ? The men coached by Bill Collins seemed unbeatable and looked well in every meet. Not a defeat was regstered in dual meets. Maryville State Teachers College was our first opponent of the season. Although they put up a game fight they were defeated by the VVesleya.u Owls, The work of Imes, Bourette, and Shultz was very commendable in this meet. S The following Saturday saw the Wesleyan forces camped in Lawrence to attend the Kansas University Relays. Although we won no first places a very good showing was made. Clark' placed fourth in the high hurdles, and Shultz took fourth in the 100 yard dash. The half mile relay team compos- ed of Coy, Bourette, Clark and Shultz won their heat in the fast time of one minute and thirty-two seconds. g Coach Collins with a small squad of men attended the Drake Relays the following week. The mile relay team did very well at this meet. Then came one of the thrillers of the season when the Collins troupe in- vaded William Jewell, the haunt of Dad Bowles. There was fast compe- tition in every event. At the last of the meet, Wesleyan, by winningyboth the relays forged ahead to victory. The .state meet was held at Fayette, the home of Central College. After the most thrilling meet ever held by M. C. A. U., Central won out by the scant margin of three points with WVesleyan second. Shultz of Wesleyan set a new record in t-he one hundred yard dashg Clark did the same in the high hurdles and the one-half mile relay team made a new record of one minute and thirty-'three seconds. , OUTLOOK FOR 1926 p The chances for a championship this spring look very good, Five old men are back in uniform and showing up well. They are Capt. Shultz, Imes, Coy, Robinson and Bourette. With these veterans as nucleus and the proper work of new men with the cooperation of the -student body should assure Wesleyan another victorious season. Not that intoxication of victory whose reaction is a pervading spirit of gloom when defeat shows her face, but more than even this. Not the hypodermic of leadership in a period of lethargy, but something deeper, more worthy, -and unending. Not the im- pulse of the hour, but the dynamic of ia lifetime. It may be the mother of Pep, or it may not be, all depending upon the particular brand of Pep. College spirit is that great Something which fills empty halls with hon- est purpose and -sacred memories, that flows into separate hearts and welds them together in a great social cause, that stirs into being new and worthy impulses, kindles unselfish ambition. cheers the plodder, inspires the genius, and opens the door of vision. It is that quality of devotion which keeps underpaid professors at their desks, and causes old graduates to rally around the flag of service when the need of Alma Mater calls. It is that pull upon the heartstrings, that overflowing of the wells of emotion when the strains of the Alma Mater bring the salty sting of tears. It is the spirit of service that calls into being effort in the classroom, on the grid- iron, and on the stage of life, impelling one to give his best wherever he finds himself and whatever the occasion may be, It knows no defeat, fears no obstacle, never grows old, faces eternity with a smile, for its name is Life, and the college that has Spirit will never die. The pick of the freshman class flocked to the fold of the Excelsior Literary Society and they were properly taken in and initiated. With this fresh bl-ood infused inzto the organization there was a great spirit of Excelsiorism that jerked the society from its slumber and placed it at the top of the- list. During t-he year, the Excelsior.s appeared in numerous open programs and plays of every manner. The twenty-sixth annual banquet was the big event on the calendar and will long be remembered -by those present. On top of all these activities the Excelsiors feel proud in the fact that they have men holding down positions in the strongest school activities. Football, debate, basketball and track have had Excelsior men holding the strong positions in those factivities. All in all, the Excelsior year has been one to be looked back up-on with pleasure and a good deal of pride. The two men who acted as president of the Excelsiors and did much to- ward its success, in fact were the main cogs in the Excelsior machine, are David Foster and Victor Coy. The loyalty manifested this year by the Adelphianrs- to Missouri 'Wfesleyan, to their society, and to each other is not a new phenomenon bu-t the continue-d expression of that ancient Adelphian spirit which is the very existence of our society. The reenactment of those older rites and ceremonies which cling to our ritualis-m and which are spoken of profanely as our initiation, inspired those members of the neophyte group who felt the -thrill and call of Adel- phianism and aspired to membership in the sacred body in a way which was expressed in higher ideals as well as in greater and better directed effort in all lines of collegiate- activity. The eighteenth annual -banquet, held at the I. O. O. F. hall on March 9th will long linger in the memories of our members and those fair guests who spent 'there a most delightful eveningj NVere there any of the attendants missing the next morning at the seven-forty-fivers? The members were found 'throughout the year in the high places of re- sponsibility and honor. The society is justly proud of the records its mem- bers have made in literary, atlhletic and musical endeavors and most of all -of their patient application to the old scholastic grind and the results there attained. On the front line in every activity, their modest boast, we notice, can be applied equally well to those old Adelphians, who continue to honor themselves and the society by their contributions in the world outside. The slogan Once an Adelphian, always an Adelphi.an -how often we hear it repeated and see its fruitfulness year by year. Adelphians first and last, each and all, for the betterment of the society and what it symbolizes and for M. W. C. OFFICERS FiI'S11 SemGS13e1' Second Semester Ralph Hulse -------.- ...... Kelsey has experienced one of the best seasons of any WVesleyan Glee Club. The chief reason for its sue-cess was the untiring efforts of Dean Kelsey, and the Club wishes to extend to him a vote of thanks for his labors. On November 7, the Club was invite-d to appear at the St. Joseph Flow- er Show, where they sang to large and appreciative audiences. ' The spring tour began March 18 and continued for thirteen days dur- ing which time seventeen concerts were given. The following towns were visited in the order named: St. Joseph, Mound City, Maitland, Skidmore, Burlington Jet., Stanberry, King City, Albany, Grant City, Bethany, Ridge- way, Lineville, Ia., Mercer, Biavanna, Spi-ckard, Trenton and Jamesport. This is the first year that any Wesleyan Club has ever sung out of the state. The home concert which was to have been given on April 6, but due to the inclement weather was postponed until April 22, and was a great suc- cess. A large and appreciative audience greeted the Club in this, their Seventh Annu-al Concert at the M. E. Church. The Club was very .ably assisted by Miss Goldie Marie Diven, reader for the Club for the third consecutive year, Miss Vera Louise Saxer, Pianist, Mr. Herbert Gale, Cornetist, Mr. Charles Taylor, Bass Soloist, and Mr. Joe Williams, Baritone soloist for fourth year. The services of Miss Diven and Messrs. Taylor and NVilliams will be sorely missed next year, and it will be hard to fill the vacancies left by these artists. PERSONNEL Dean Herbert C. C84 STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council functioning in it 's second year of existence has been able to handle many prolblems of the student body. It has been in a measure the co-operative agency between the students and the faculty. When in session the members of the Council have been eager to discuss both sides of any question that may have arisen, regardless of prejudice or fear of reproach. The members of this council represent the different groups and activities of the student body. Some of the matters discussed were relations of the studen body in gen-eral and particularly the Freshmen class for the first semester, election of officers of student body, members and Criterion Staff and conduct of students on the campus. Mrs. Archibald Dyke was a tall, aris- tocraticlady with white hair and a mysterious past, who had inherited the estate from her husband's father after he had died several years before, on the thirteenth day of thc- month. No one had ever seen Mrs. Archibald be- fore, except Uncle Billy Baldwin, the oldes-t and curiousest man in the little southern village. Uncle Billy could-and would--sit by the hour and tell wonderful stories of the tim-es when the house on the hill was filled with -company and thei roads with tallyhos. Archie Dyke had been a tall aenemic y-Outh with pale h.a.ir and eyes, but was very popular -because of his wealth -and hospitality. He had run away from home after a petty quarrel with his father, and a few years af- terward the report drifted 'back that he was married. A year after this re- port came back, an imposing carriage with .a liveried driver on the box had driven m-adly up to the tavern door and a young man with wild pale eyes demanded coffee for two. He carried it to the carriage himself just as Uncle Billy came up the street. Uncle Billy gazed with large amazed eyes at thesmart equipage, for since Archibald had run away, nothing of this kind had been seen. As hd neared it, he was able to -see a very pale lady in a heavy black dress looking from the wind-ow, just as the coachman drove swiftly away in the direction of the old mansion where the Judge had shut himself up after his son's departure. The next morning, 'before anyone was up, the carriage had driven away with its occupants, and the negroes informed the villagers that Archie and his wife had come home, fbut when the old man was assured of his son's marriage they'd had an awful row and the old man kicked 'em out, bag and -baggage, an' tole 'em n-ot to step theirifoot inside that house no mo'- yessirf' Year.s went 'by and the old man died, leaving a peculiar will with a clause reading, I leave my house 'to my son's wife, if she can live in it long enough to pay her for staying. The first night the servants had jumped from their beds, startled by a terrible shriekg but were calmed and quited by a white-faced, trembling Mrs. Dyke, who moved them to cabins a little dis- tance from the house the next day. They gradually got over their fright but still felt that something terrible -s'picious was the matter up to the big house. Littlei John Washington Johnson, a southern negro of the blackest type -and as all good negroes, very superstitious-walked cautiously through the big woods with Mrs. Dyke's washing. Just now he was living in a state of indescrilbable dread because he had -been thirteen years old for thirteen days, a black c.at had crossed his path, and a hoot owl had just in- quired very dolefully wh-oo-whooo-who are you-u-u-u? It was growing dark and the mansion had an eery appearance in the bright moonlight and besides that 4'-ol-ei hootin' owl might be anxious about him again. If he hooted, John knew he'd turn white. If he didn't have that 'old washing he'd run, but in spite of the washing he managed to trot the last few steps and .arrive breathle.ss. Mrs. Dyke, herself, opened the door. Come right in, John Washington, while I get some collars. I forgot to send them. It was the first time he had ever been in the living room and he perched on a high stiff chair lo-oking like an undergrown chicken. Only one candle was burning in the candlestick, and it blinked as if it didn't know whether to stay or go. He was alone and the grandfather clock was striking. John decided to count the strokes-nine-ten-eleven-twelve-- It mu.st be fast -O-h golly, was it ?-it was striking thirteen. John got up with escape as his only idea. In his blind terror he ran again.st the table, th-e candle flick- ered and went out. Turning he stumbled, fell into the clock, and was still. He could onlytrust fto Providence and Mrs. Dyke to get him out, and he h.adn'1t much faith in either of th-em. Mrs. Dyke came in, calling, John Washington! Why, what's the matter? Are you hurt? Don't move until I get a candle. He was not hurt and there was no danger of his -moving. He was frozen fast to that spot, clutching at something with his eyes closed tightly and his teeth chat- tering. The candle came and Mrs. Dyke picked him up. What in the name of all the saints happened to you, Johnny? Tell me. Why child, you 're actually pale ! Oh Missus, Missus, it strike thirt-een times-the candle go out 'en the hootin' owl out in the timber hooted, 'en I run and I broke the clock. Oh golly-look! She had soft brown eyes and un-bobbed auburn hair, which fell in wavy masses around her face. As she read, a look of disguest cross- ed her face. T.he stenographer shifted her chewing gum to the other side of her mouth, and giggled. - Yes, she said, this is the best new dance I've learned yet. And, by the w.ay, you should he-ar the new record I've got on the Vi-ctrola. It's a wow! Oh, Ernie asked me to go to the d-ance tonight! Isn't that keen? I Wish you were gonna go, too. Katherine McClure threw the book across the room and looked out of the window. ' Why on earthf' she said to herself, do people always have to pick on stenographer-s? For every hair-brained event that ever takes place. the blame is given to them. Acc-ording to this writer a stenogra.pher is incap- a-ble of any more serious thought than that of securing a date, of any more worthy deed than that o-f putting. her make-up on straight. There were several letters and one card for Katherine. She read the card first. It merely ran thus: I Dear Katherine, I Will 'be home tomorrow-am st-opping in Chicago today. I'1l talk to you then. James. Before she had finished reading the rest of her letters, the door opened and a girl, probably three years Katherine's senior, came in. If Katherine represented Irish beauty, this girl, Sibyl Laine, was a fair representative of the Anglo-Saxon. Katherine turned t-o her. Oh, Sibyl, just guess whom I heard from today! From James-our beloved James Rae! And he's coming home tomorrow! To-morrow! The tone, though indifferent was very low, almost a whisper. Sibyl tried to smile in her usual delightful manner and yet Kath- erine detected something in her face that she had never seen there before. It was only for a mom-ent, and yet that look of pain and acute anguish could not -be disguised. That look on Sibyl's face told Katherine something that, she had never even dared to think of before. When will he be here-at what time, I mean? Sibyl finally broke the awkard silence. I-Ie doesn't say. Here. you read the card. I'm going out for a walk in the park, I need the fresh air and exercise. Won't you go along? No, thanks, I think I'll go to bed and sleep off this headache. I'm not even going to eat' any dinner. I'll eat down town. Bye, bye. Have a good sleep for me. A Once in the park, Katherine forgot all about her walk. She had come there to thrash out this problem all by herself. She seated herself on a bench, and began to think hard. Why h.adn't she noticed it before. Of course, Sibyl loved James, she couldn't help it. He had not written-only this one card. And Silbyl had not suspected until' today. She had never told her for some reason, but she on her part had never suspected how much Sibyl cared until today. Dear old Sib! How much she had done for her! But one day, Katherine had come up to their room to hear Si-byl singing in such a clear, sweet voice that she at once knew that the girl had been -bluntly lying, about herself. Right there Kath- erine drew the lin-e, and took no more lessons until she had finished her one more year of high school and her business course, and could pay for them her-self. Yes, ind-eed, Sibyl had ibeen a veritable mother, sister, friend, and guardian angel to her, ever since that day when she had found her half- starved, friendle-ss, hopeless on the streets. And this is th-e way I am to pay her back-she who has done so much for me, who has worked her fingers off for me? Am I to take away her lipfu-long happiness, and leave only loneliness and emptiness before her? God forbid! Truly if I do this, the author of that article I was reading this afternoon was right. A beast! A silly, frivolous, selfish, ungrateful fool! Nothing more! I know James would love her, if it wasn't for me. He has a silly notion that he prefers me because I'm Hpeppi-er -I guess that's the word to use. And yet, I love James. Why should I give up my happiness? Wouldn'it the future be just as long for me-and just as empty? Life is so long, long, long-when there 's nothing to look forward to. Oh, I. could die for Sibyl-willingly-gladly, but I can't live hopelessly for her! I can't, can't! All my life before I knew her wa-s just one c-easeless longing for an education, for the development of my musical ability, and for love. One ceaseless torture -of hunger, cold, and longing! And now, at the supreme hour of my happiness, I must. give it up! The darkness' de-scended, and .a chill wind came up from the east, howl- mournfully in the tree-tops. Hours pass-ed, but there was no sign of life from the girl who sat still on the bench, head hidden in her arms, fight- ing one of those battles so common to men, and yet of which God alone is always the witness. ing Finally Katherine arose quickly and started for home. Arriving in her room, she turned on a light in one corner, and drew from her small desk some stationery, ink, and a pen. She glanced at Sibyl.
