A friend is someone whothinks of you and him as a team and will sacrifice himself for the common good, A friend is someone who devotes himself and his talents to the strengthening and better- ment of the friendship. In these ways, Coach VolneyC. Ashford, vice-president, athletic director, and head football and track coach at Missouri Valley College, is a true friend to this institution and to each student on her campus. His loyalty and devotionto our college and to her students are obvious. The emotion MVC feels toward Coach has, however, gone beyond friendship. During his tenure here, Coach Ashford has earnedthe genuine love of Valley students and faculty members alike. His sincerity and integrity, his friendly manner and his ability as a leader are beyond question. Politeness, consideration, and fair play formthe basic components of his personality and way of life. Athletically , Coach Ashford has proven himself to be not merely good, but great. He can claim the respect of every member of any team he leads. His ability as a football coach earned for him this year, a recognition award from the Football Writers Association of America, and the title, Coach of the Year, Never too busy for a friendly word, never too rushed to follow the principles which he teaches and by which he lives, Coach Ashford serves as an ideal for each man and woman at Missouri Valley College. For these reasons and out of the deep gratitude Valley feels toward Coach, we the SABIDURIA staff of 1958-59, dedicate this book to a true friend of Valley and to a man who forms an integral part of Missouri Valley College - Volney C.
