A friend is someone whothinks of you and him as a team and will sacrifice himself for the common good, A friend is someone who devotes himself and his talents to the strengthening and better- ment of the friendship. In these ways, Coach VolneyC. Ashford, vice-president, athletic director, and head football and track coach at Missouri Valley College, is a true friend to this institution and to each student on her campus. His loyalty and devotionto our college and to her students are obvious. The emotion MVC feels toward Coach has, however, gone beyond friendship. During his tenure here, Coach Ashford has earnedthe genuine love of Valley students and faculty members alike. His sincerity and integrity, his friendly manner and his ability as a leader are beyond question. Politeness, consideration, and fair play formthe basic components of his personality and way of life. Athletically , Coach Ashford has proven himself to be not merely good, but great. He can claim the respect of every member of any team he leads. His ability as a football coach earned for him this year, a recognition award from the Football Writers Association of America, and the title, Coach of the Year, Never too busy for a friendly word, never too rushed to follow the principles which he teaches and by which he lives, Coach Ashford serves as an ideal for each man and woman at Missouri Valley College. For these reasons and out of the deep gratitude Valley feels toward Coach, we the SABIDURIA staff of 1958-59, dedicate this book to a true friend of Valley and to a man who forms an integral part of Missouri Valley College - Volney C. Ashford. May he long remain as a reminder ofthe standards and ideals of the real Viking Spirit .... V0l EY II. ASHHIRII llueen Nliss Paula Swanson ma M, W is ima IIIINIINIS A ' -M N A 5 An Open Letter to the Student Body of Missouri Valley College Dear Students , This book includes the activities of one of the finest years in the history of Missouri Valley College. It also includes the activities of the student body which was one of the finest of Missouri Valley College. Yes, we can look back with pride on the achievements of this year, 1958-'59, for it had its successes and its failures. However, the successes by far outnumber the failures which were not really such at all, for everything was undertaken with the true spirit of the Viking. Our athletic teams were of the finest quality and the players in all sports gave their best inthe spirit of true sportsmanship, Our dramatics and music students worked tremendously hard to make their presentations the finest. We can tell by the records that all the students worked especially hard on their studies, and the professors certainly went the extra mile in aiding us, The dormitory organizations and Greeks certainly did a fine job in backing every activity, adding greatly to the success of this year. Why? Because we are proud of Missouri Valley College and all for which it stands. We are proud of the prevailing VIKING SPIRIT and its innermost significance, Yes, we are proud because we have worked to gain something of which to be proud. It is exactly this sort of pride in our activites that made the year a successful one and fun for us to be a part. It certainly made the job of the Senate easier and the job of the officers a more enjoyable one. A hearty congratulations to you, the students, for your fine contributions. They will become only a part of Missouri Valley College in the annals of history, but they will be a significant part. Very sincerely yours , ,Liz Mori Chuck Bloczynski President, Student Senate FACUHY llll ss0? EARLE COLLINS President Admmstratiun Through the SABIDURIA we extend greetings to all our students, colleagues and friends who read this publication today and in the years to come. To the members of the SABIDURIA staff we extend our congratulations upon the compilation of so excellent a publication. This has been an excellent school year, one of Missouri Va1ley's best. We are sure you will see evidence of this as campus life during the year has been portrayed in this book. It would be our hope that every student, even though you may have been here only one semester during the year, will keep this 1959 SABIDURIA as a memo of the year's activities. As the years come and go you will prize it even more highly. When you show it to your grandchildren in the year 2000, it will mean far more to you than it does now. It will revive memories which are now fresh but then will have long been forgotten except for the record as set forth so effectively by this year's SABIDURIA staff. Very sincerely yours, li.Ea.0Q. It is the tenth oldest national social fraternity and has 58 active undergraduate chapters. The basic principle of the fraternities program is to better the man socially, intellec- tually and morally, Alpha Omicron chapter was founded June 2, 1945 as the result of the local Alpha Delta Kappa fraternity petitioning the national organization, During our thirteen years of active participation on the Valley campus many outstanding leaders have been produced. The Brothers Add a Festive Note Dr. Stellwagen Speaks Great Success, Alpha Sig Assembly Activities for this academic year started out with the pledging of 16 men. Sigma Nu Fraternity was founded at Virginia Military Institute in 1869. Our early name was known as the Knights of the Legion of Honor, The principles of the Knights of the Legion of Honor soon spread to the other colleges and universities and eventually the Legion became known as Sigma Nu. The purpose of Sigma Nu is to build character which is accomplished by placing an emphasis on scholarship and fellowship. Sigma Nu tries to prepare men for life after college by creatinga high sense of honor and alove for fellowman. The fraternity is dedicated to the function of providing wholesome, helpful and stimulating fellowship for its members. Beta Gamma Chapter of Sigma Nu was founded here at Missouri Valley College in 1891. Soon after being founded, it was necessary for the chapter to go subrosa, but in 1931 the chapter again became active, Through the year, Beta Gamma Chapter has built a high reputation by preserving the principles of Sigma Nu, Two awards were received by the chapter this year. One was the Inter-Fraternity Plaque for having the highest Greek men's scholastic average on campus. The other award was the first prize trophy given for the best decorations for Football Homecoming, Socially, Sigma Nu had more than their share of parties, A few of our more outstanding ones were our Brothers Parties held in Indian Foothills Park and our annual Sigma Nu TKE Christmas Dance held at the VFW hall in Marshall, Our White Rose Formal which is our highlight of social events was again a big success this year. Our rush season was very successful this year. We feel that the men we pledged are of the character that has helped make Sigma Nu one of the top ten fraternities in the US. The house is the fullest it has ever been in years and we are planning to keep it that way. Doris and S. All American Boy 5. fggggi 'N M fx , 4 .wf,4A.. From its founding in 1953, Delta Upsilon Chapter has been ever moving forward while striving to live up to the high principles of our fraternity. Delta Upsilon Chapter passed a milestone in its growth this year as we initiated our one-hundredth member. We feel this is a fine achievement since our charter in Tau Kappa Epsilon is less than four years old. Our Founder's Day banquet was held at Flat Creek Inn in recognition of our House Mother, Mrs. Patton, and the Chairman of our Board of Control, Mr, Price Bywaters. We recognized Mrs. Patton with a bouquet of Red Carnations, our fraternity flower, and Mr. Bywaters received the Teke Medalion for his outstanding service to this chapter since its beginning, Also recognized at the Founder's Day banquet was Everett Fisher who was named the first recipient of the Wharff -Nixon Bull-Throwing Trophy for his sportsmanship and general good nature around our house. Being a social fraternity we feel we have had an outstanding social program again this year. Adding to our social program again this year were informal gatherings in the chapter room for dancing, monthly birthday parties, and periodical snacks. One of the highlights of the social season on campus during the fall semester was the annual Teke-Sigma Nu Christmas Dance at the V.F.W. Hall. This year's RedCarnation Ball was undoubtedly one of the finest formal affairs held at Missouri Valley in recent years. This dance is given each year in honor of the young lady who is chosen to reign as our Teke Sweetheart for the following year. In May we again traveled southward to the Lake of the Ozarks for our annual co-educational weekend. This outing was one of the most enjoyable events of the whole year for all who were in attendance. Our Fall pledge class undertook the project of completely renovating our office and the men turned the room into one of the best looking rooms on campus. This project just about completes the remodeling of our house. It has taken us since we moved into it in the fall of 1955, but with a good group of men working toward the same goals the nucleus is there to get the job done. We are very proud of our house for many reasons, but mainly because we can look around and find something in which each of us have made improvements. For the first time in the history of our chapter we have won a major intramural sport by capturing the 1958 Intramural Football championship. Another honor bestowed upon our chapter this year was the first place trophy for homecoming float and second place in house decorations. Yes, we are still making progress in all fields and feel we have come of age as a fraternity on this campus. Q YQ.- I IH! MIO Al HBAIHI IW , A E 9-,.. --..,. Professor Rodney L, Wells is our chapter advisor and has officiated very compe- tently in that position since our chapter was founded as Alpha Gamma Colony in 1953. Indeed it has been much through his keen interest in our progress and his oftimes wise advice that our chapter has grown so well in the past four years . We are sure that Mr. Wells will continue to be a very important part of Teke at Missouri Valley in years to come. f The TKE Victory Bell is a symbol and perhaps one of the causes of the tremendous Viking spirit which has been noted on campus this year. This bell was taken to Florida on the Marathon Torch Run in hopes that it would bolster the spirit of the football team. We are planning to take it to many of our out of town games in the future and are sure it is going to rank right along with Valley Will Roll as a part of the Viking Spirit. 75 l ug k,.L-wf QN-ifV-'ixgggggzwl ' , 'ww . Being a Service Fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega crosses all lines of honorary, social and professional fraternities, and thus members of other campus organizations may also be active in this fraternity. Through co-operation with other organizations the programof Alpha Phi Omega may be made most effective. The program of Epsilon Epsilon Chapter here at Valley is built around a constant effort to serve the student body and faculty, the youth of our community, members of the fraternity, and the nation as participating citizens, No year is declared successful unless at least one major aspect of the overall program is devoted to serving each of the above areas. Organized in 1948 by a group of nationally prominent leaders in the fields of finance, commerce, business, industry, labor, education, and religion , the American Humanics Foundation is dedicated to the training and development of youth leaders. The four-year curriculum involves both fundamental academic training and sound specialization slanted toward professional needs. The program was inaugurated at Missouri Valley College at the beginning of the fall semester in the year 1949, under the direction of W, Hobart Hill, Chief Resident Administrator. Through him, weekly seminars and occasional field trips are arranged. With the backing of approximately thirty professional youth leaders, H. Roe Bartle took the lead in organizing the .Board of Directors of the American Humanics Foundation. Mr. Bartle further exemplified his interest in the program by becoming the first administrator of the Foundation. Miss Halstead, who is now administrator, was Mr, Bartle's assistant. As we move into our tenth year it is gratifying to look back and see the success realized by over one hundred graduates of the Foundation. It is satisfying to know that we are being properly trained for the particular program in which we are best fitted to serve Almighty God and our fellowman. Additional progress was realized in the establishment of the paper as astudent pub- lication in the full-size newspaper format. During the first semester, withthe editor- ship of Carl Christensen, the financial founda- tions of the DELTA were strengthened to the point where the paper showed a slight profit in the operational budget. The staff also secured membership inthe Missouri Collegiate Newspaper Association and entered several papers and articles in their annual contest, Editions published during both semesters were also entered in the Associated Collegiate Press All-American Newspaper Critical Ser- vice. Awards are made in this contest on the basis of nation-wide comparison with news- papers from institutions of similar enrollment. The DELTA has consistently ranked high in its area of competition. Again this year a special eight page Christmas edition was published, featuring for the first time a complete two page, composite advertising theme. Incorporated in the final issue of the first semester was a commemoration of the anniversary ofthe near- fatal fire to the Democrat-News printing plant on Dec, 12, 1957, Under the editorship of Robin Marrs the second semester editions of the DELTA appeared with a revised basic format. This decision was made after three semesters of publication with approximately the same style of layout, Because of this modern transition new interest has been developed in the weekly content of the DELTA. While wired-wireless stations are not new on the campus scene, WMVC is a recent addition to our campus. Work started on the station early in the fall semester and it wasn't until the Sth of March that the station officially signed on the air. Many hours of work went into the birth of the station by many people, ranging from students to radio personality Gregg Oliver, WDAF Radio. Although at the present time the station is servicing only one-third of the campus, plans- are under way to extend the service to include the rest of the campus. One of the many News Broadcasts Covering one of Valleys' Games How many people does it take to put up one little wire. Gleaning some information from a tradejournal Explaining how a station keeps its record library. It is our hope that station WMVC will continue to serve the Valley campus with music, news, and sports coverage, at the same time giving our students a chance to gain valuable experience in radio techniques and practices. 103 RUSNAK ff I ,V A g , 1.35 WILLIAMS ,,.4 'af - Q6 ..: . Too little blocking hurts 1958 Missouri Valley could not contain the powerful East Texas State Lions beyond the third quar- ter and lost a 26 to 7 decision on a playing field turned into a muddy quagmire, The Vikings completely out- played the Lions in the first half but trailed in the scoring column, 12-7. Both the first and third quarters were scoreless. Mel Rogers was credited with the lone Viking TD with Mosey booting the extra point. Little Ray Ricono did a tre- mendous job guiding the team's offense and Dan Stanley, leading scorer and ground-gainer, was extremely difficult to halt. Ends Guy Malone and Don Kalthoff had exceptionally good games while the defensive stand- outs were Larry Hall, Bob Keeton, George Clemens, and Ronnie Hall. end run attempt.
