Of the ninety-seven that started out single and unmarried, fifteen have been struck with the matrimonial complex, four choosing their Ulife mates from the college roster. In other words, fifteen per cent are no longer free, single, and un- married. Thirty-six will receive their degrees from Missouri Valley College, and nineteen have already or will graduate from other colleges in the Class of '30. Or, fifty-six per cent will graduate or have already graduated. ' Nine who have dropped out of school, have re-entered school again either at Missouri' Valley or elsewhere. The members of this Class have made thirty-four letters in football, fifteen letters in basket ball, fourteen letters in baseball. There are three men in the Class who are lettermen in three major sports. This Class has contributed six captains of teams in major sports, a cheerleader for four years, one stu- dent president, two May queens, twenty members to the Men's Glee Club, and twenty-four members to the Girls' Glee Club and a director for two years. THE MTSSDURT VALLEY COLLEGE DELTA HE Missouri Valley College Delta, a seven-column bi-weekly newspaper, is the official student publication of the College. Its aim has been to por- tray student life, student opinion, and to act as a free medium between students, faculty, and alumni. ' The past few years has seen The Delta advance from a five-column, four-page, monthly paper to its present size of seven columns, and issued bi- weekly. The subscription price, however, has remained the same and the adver- tising rates decreased. The Delta is a charter member of The Missouri College Newspaper Association and its editor, R. Wilson Brown, is president of the Association. The paper was given a high rating in the M. C. N. A. contests and many of its articles were given prizes. The subscription list includes every student' and faculty member and many alumni and friends, which brings the list past the 750 mark. A special alumni department was introduced this year and was in charge of Miss Ida Lou Sterrett. Another feature introduced this year was the column of the College President. Gordon Robertson is the editor-elect for 1930-1931. THE STAFF Editor-in- Chief . . A ssociate Editor . Business Manager . . A dvertising Ill ana ger . . Members from last year returned and new members have been taken in. On November 6, the annual Carnival was held. The early part of the even- ing was devoted to side-shows, booths and stands. In the latter part of the evening, the A. A. Vaudeville was given. This consisted of various singing and dancing acts, skits, and the program was concluded by a demonstration by the Tumblers The A. A. also sponsored a Women's Athletic Revue in Morrison Gym- nasium, March 18. The program included all work in physical education and athletics. It is the aim of the Association to present annu ally one of these demon- strations free to the public. Besides these two major activities, the Club has sponsored Club parties and stu dent play parties. Membership in the Athletic Association is obtained by earning seventy-five points in athletics. For each sport a Class tourney is held, awarding points to all girls making class teams. A Super-A is awarded whenever a member's points total two hundred. Last year, Miss Jane Bankard of Joplin won the purple and gold blanket that is given each year to the girl who has received the greatest activity points during that year. OFFICERS MARY DOANE . . . Some of the work done along this line is of decided merit. The young people of the College can find no better training than that pro- vided by participation in the orchestra and band. Students in general have gradually come to the realization that music is for all and is becoming more and more a necessary part of a complete education. This year the orchestra has twentynfour pieces and the band has about twenty. The band functioned for all the football games and led the parade when Governor Caulfield spoke at the dedication of the athletic field. Robert Thomp- son served as business manager and Chapman Bradley acted as student director. The orchestra has appeared twice in Chapel and has been Well liked on both occasions. Page 73 THE VESTED CHOTR N THE fall of 1928, the President of Missouri Valley College in co-operation with the Dean of the School of Music decided to augment and enrich the religious services, taking place in Stewart Chapel, by the organization of a choir which would include the voices of our most talented students and a faculty member. The choir was chosen. Miss Frances Mary Pallister, who has the Spanish Chair, was selected as leader and director of this group. lt was originally composed of eight voices: Mary Sweeney and Priscilla Mart, sopranosg Robert Landrum and Elston Smith, tenorsg Helen Vawter and Frances Lou Fletcher, contraltosg Aubrey Jeter and Charles Bacon. basses, with Miss Marie Mclntosh as accompanist, Dean Claude L. Fichthorn being the organist. The choir was vested and gave numerous beautiful sacred selections during the Tuesday services. That winter a pleasant experience came the way of the choir. Through Miss Pallister, who has often been heard over the radio station XNDAF, The Kansas City Star, Kansas City, Missouri, arrangements were made for the broadcasting of Christmas carols and solos over that station. A. T. Vawter, violinist and professor at Missouri Valley College, went with the group. It continued its work, never a halt in its progress, and the following Christmas of 1929, they sang Christmas carols throughout the city of Marshall. Gleaming candles welcomed the waits as they journeyed from home to home pouring forth their tidings of Hpeace on earth, good will toward men. Many of the rehearsals prior to these occasions had been at the h me of Mrs. J. H. Pallister, Miss Pallister's mother, where short social times and refreshments were shared. Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Vawter also entertained the choir following their carol- ing tour. The choir was increased to sixteen voices. The present choir consists of Rachel VVilliams,, Mary Elizabeth Perry, Corinne Bacon Seawell and Miss Pallister, sopranos, Helen Frances Bound, Josephine Evans, Christine Leimbrock and Kathleen Henshaw, contraltosg XVilliam Harlan, Aubrey Jeter, Charles Bacon, Adolphus Barberg, basses, Robert Landrum, Elston Smith, Chapman Bradley and John Thompson, tenors. A. Director of Athlelics O COACH goes most of the credit for the excellent football teams that have been turned out by Valley during the past and for the great team turned out this year. His untiring and consistent efforts plus his great character and football knowledge have made his teams almost unbeatable. VVe congratulate him as being the greatest factor in winning the three championships in the last six years. Dr. Nuckles was a great factor in keeping our boys on the field of play and in the best of physical condition. To him goes a great portion of the credit of winning the coveted championship. I l DR. ROBERT VANVVINKLE: Rip, Co-Captain-elect for 1930. He is equally effective on offense or defense. Everyone will remember this boy for his spiking in the Westminster game. He is a second All-Conference selection. MILESS HAGGARD: Mike, Co-Captain, probably was the greatest full- back ever turned out at Valley. For three years, the unanimous choice for All- Conference teams. FRED TXVILLINGZ A'Fritz, a boy with brains and a fighting heart. He played both end and halfback. A letterman in both '25 and '26, he came back this year and delivered in a brilliant manner. CECIL PATTERSON: l'Pat is a triple-threat man in every sense of the Word. Again an All-Conference selection. He is light but shifty and possesses great speed. fail rf Page 84 4 WW LEWIS RITTERBUSCHI Louie, playing his first year for Valley, stepped in when needed and filled his place like a veteran in playing a guard position. PRESTON AMOS: Firpo, a three-year man and playing his last year for Valley. This boy has plenty of scrap and a never-say-die spirit. EDWIN SEBASTIAN: f'Eddie played a mighty good halfback position and, with a little experience, should prove mighty valuable. VOLNEY ASHFORD: Volney, a great little quarterback, who was superb as a signal caller and a football strategist. Although sustaining injuries, he was always there to give his best. PATRICK PHELAN: Pat, Co-Captain Irish, whose fighting spirit helped Valley through every crisis. He is small, but is an accurate passer and a great defensive center. His sportsmanship is of the highest rank and he is also an All-Conference selection. A 1 ' 3 Page S5 Q JOHN ELDER: Although not a letter man, he was constantly trying and made those that practiced opposite him know that they had competition in keeping ahead of him. LEON RUMANS: Leon, playing tackle and guard, is a man possessing re- markable ability for a first-year man. He was always cool and a consistent player. VVe should hear a great deal from this boy in the years to come. EARL RIOTH: Charley, Co-Captain for 1930. Rioth played football because he loved it. This boy plays tackle and he knows how to play it. He was a demon on the defense and possesses plenty of drive on the offense. For the second time, he is an All-Conference selection. He should make a great leader in 1930. VIRGIL BLOSSOM: Another All-State end who showed his determination to play on a championship team. His improvement from his freshman year was marvelous. His first year proved to be his beggared year. 5 x, IQ .L 1 . V ,, ' ' , Q. . He pos- sessed plenty of speed and drive. We are expecting to see him in the starting line up next year. LELAND HUTCHERsoN: A sample package of his brother, playing a mighty good end position, especially in the Jewell game. He has three more years and should letter next fall. BooN GREGG J. BOURNE MITCHELL HE New Gregg-Mitchell Athletic Field was made possible by the generous gifts of S. Boon Gregg '09, and J. Bourne Mitchell '08, and was named after their mother and father respectively. Friends and stu dents augmented this fund and the final grading was completed in the summer of 1928. Then the field was allowed to settle for a year. Later on these two old grads supplemented their original gift in order to complete the curbing and fencing. Then it was that Coach Godfriaux conceived the idea of a concrete-steel stadium, with a result that Valley has the only stadium in the Missouri College Union. The stadium seats 3,160 and all seats are reserved. The playing field is surrounded by a quarter-mile track 25 feet wide, con- sisting of a deep layer of rock and topped off by a combination of ashes and clay. The ashes were furnished by our two generous railroads. Night lighting is practically assured for the fall of 1930, and will be the third stadium in Missouri to be lighted for nocturnal football. - 1 Page 92 BASKET BALL GEORGE BROCK: Playing his last year for the Vikings, always a mainstay On the defense giving the best he had at all times. Played guard and center, and his shoes will be hard to fill next year. VOLNEY ASHFORD: Captain of the 1930 squad had the misfortune to sustain a knee injury in the football season that so inhibited his playing that he finally had to give up the game entirely, and it was with sincere regret that his basket ball career was ter- minated so misfortunately. ADRIEN Hnssz The other Senior on the squad, and Could always be counted upon to break into the scoring column. His fight and determination were always a worthwhile example for his teammates. RAAYNIOND LONG : Playing his first year for Valley, he improved as the season aged. He has a good eye for the basket and is a fast floor man and an accurate power. HARRY TRYGG: He can probably attribute his ability to shoot straight for the basket to the fact that he came from Chicago. With two more years ahead of him he should prove to be a valuable asset. CARSON DOWELL: Also playing his first year with the Viking crew and was one of the fastest men on the court all season, playing a cleaniaggressive game all the time and counting for many goals of the season. He made the team paramount. VIRGIL DOUGHERTY: ' 'lDemus felt the call of the old Viking Spirit and, after three years, returned to the Viking port to regain his position on the Valley quintet, demonstrating his ability to protect our ring in case of danger, and amply able to bring the ball back down the court for counters. Page 94 7 ,, W!! MWWX RICHARD NUCKLES : Dick also playing his first year under the purple and orange showed his tenacity in the gruelling man-to-man defense, never allowing his man out of reach. VVith a little more experience he will prove valuable to the team. LEONARD LowE : The midget of the squad, has latent possibilities, and with a few more pounds and more experience should develop into an important cog in the future. EDMOND HARR1s: 'lHickory broke into a few games this season, and proved his ability in a splendid manner, and with three years of competition ahead of him should prove his worth in a sterling manner. Page 95 BASEBALL ASEBALL at Missouri Valley sang its swan song as a major sport last year. Games were scheduled with Kemper, Central and Wentworth and return engagements were played, also. The season was finished with a standing of .500. Haggard, Salyers and Hess did most of the mound Work for Valley. Captain Patterson worked behind the plate and finished Circuit Clouts at most opportune times. It is the purpose of the department to open the field of sports to all girls, creating all-round sportsmanship and ability, rather than specialization in one or two fields. The regular program for physical education classes consists of practical and technical instruction in Hockey and Soccer, Basket Ball, Volley Ball, Baseball, Tennis, Track and Field. The regular course also includes folk dancing, clogging, ballet, free-hand exercises, Wand drill, apparatus and mat Work. I 1 V , ' I ' N 00 new ll l it i l A l ll l li , 1 'f L ff ii vi l 3 E I. Tennis this year received quite an impetus with the com- pletion of four' new courts, southwest of the gymnasium. They are of good quality clay with a generous proportion of white chat that has packed down to a fast playing surface. Good ten-foot backstops have been erected at each end of the court. YOUNG HALL HE NEW' dormitory for young men was made possible by the very liberal generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Vtfilliam B. Young of Kansas City. Ground was broken early in February last year, and the corner stone was laid in the spring, and in the fall when school started the dormitory was ready for occupancy. The three-story brick dormitory was erected and furnished at a cost of 35120,- OOO and will accommodate 102 men. The sun parlor, lobby, and reception room are features of the hall, and outstanding is the innovation of sleeping porches on each wing, thus eliminating beds in the rooms. The dormitory is in the efficient hands of Mrs. Annie B. Hagedorn and rooms are inspected once a Week promulgating a neat and tidy incentive. All the students on the campus eat in the spacious dining room in the basement, which is under the supervision of Miss Minnie Kopf, an expert dietician and instructor in Home Economics. The building was dedicated last fall by Dr. Cleland B. McAfee, Moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly, in the presence of Mr. and Mrs. NVilliam B. Young, Dr. S. VVillis McKelvey of Kansas City and Chas. A. Lee, State Super- intendent of Schools. Z 2 5 2 5 ,f fm nf... - . Bottom row-DR. MCAFEE, lVIRs. YOUNG, MR. YOUNG, DR. NICKELVEY . Top rowuPREs. Guo. H.
