' 5naro1 ’ 186 House Two can boast of many distincitions during the 1980-8 1 school year. The house was the first of the female houses to obtain T-shirts, which bear the slogan “THE LUCK OF THE IRISH”. House Two carried away first prize in the 1980 Christmas decorations contest wit h the Peanuts Christmas theme, “WE WISH Y OU A MERRY CHRISTMAS”, which was manifested through such original decoration techniques as carolers outside and beautiful House Two women under the misdetoe on each floor. The house sponsored a square dance in January which proved to be a great success, and in February they again showed holiday spirit by decorating the front windows for Valentine’s Day. House Two average resident’s age is 20.3 years, oldest of the UMR women’s dorms. The House Two “family” includes several outstanding varsity basketball players, and it also can boast of two members who have lived in the house for four years. This year marked the first time that Farrar Hall was occupied by women. Surprisingly, all but four of the original fifty-six coeds were freshmen; three of the remaining four were transfer students. The one exception was the returning RA, who has been responsible for a lot of the fun an this house. For example, she recommeded “The 11:30 Dirties” highly to all her residents as a unique viewing experience. In spite of her guidance, they had to learn most of the “ins” and “outs” of college life through trial and error no one told them cats weren’t allowed in the dorm .... they only wanted a mascot! Apparently, some well intentioned men wanted to replace their lost pet by supplying each of the girls with her very own bat on Halloween .... you should have hear them screaming with glee (?). — When the time came for the annual snowball fight, one of the girls got confused and threw out her “bra”, thinking it was a panty raid! They have all made innocent mistakes like that, even the fourth floor residents who claim to be the “next best thing to heaven” .... Surely they mean they are all angels don’t they? Well, maybe not exactly home as that word usually implies a warm bed and good food. The heat had a habit of not working on the coldest days and nights, the “500 Building” inhabitants also woke up to ice water for showers several times, and for meals residents were forced to subject their taste-buds to the evils ofTJ, the U. Center, or some combination of cooking in their rooms and eating out. And as long as no one overslept, the Miner Connection buses provided reliable transportation to and from campus and meals. — Throughout the year, when residents were not busy with the usual UMR nightmarish task of homework, they found release in various forms. Besides sliding on “Wet Willy” in the fall. Frisbee and softball in the parking lot, an occasional party was slipped by (?) the RA’s notice. Second semester, the first (and last?) Manor Inn party was held at ‘Tech Engine” in February, and a canoe trip on the Current River in March was also sponsored. — Asa part of MHA East, Manor residents attended a barbeque at Meramec Springs in May, and participated in various intramural sports. They contributed to the first place doubles tennis team and placed first in heavyweight wrestling. Also, an all Manor team took second place in bowling. The Nu Deuteron Chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi was founded at the University of Missouri-Rolla on May 15, 1947. The chapter has always strived for high scholas- tic achievement while maintaining an ac- tive interest in campus, social and other extra-curricular activities. The intramural teams improved overall this past year, led by winning seasons in football and softball. St. Pat’s highlighted the social activities, with congratulations to A1 Ketterer for being elected to the St. Pat’s Court as a Guard. During the Spring semester, the house was involved in a community pro- ject with the City of Rolla through the Parks and Recreation Department. These seven founders, often called the Seven Jewels, initiated a trend of leadership, character, and moral fiber that still exists among Black college men today. Here at U.M.R., Alpha Phi Alpha opens doors to the other organizations on the campus such as the Student Council, Inter- fraternal Council, Alpha Phi Omega Ser- vice Fraternity, Gamma Alpha Delta Ser- vice Fraternity and others. They have been established on the U.M.R. campus since 1965 and during that time their voice has been heard con- cerning a variety of issues. Their chapter, Eta, is one of the strongest throughout our National Fraternity. They were awarded many hon- ors during the most recent Beta Sigma Psi convention. Their present house was built in 1967 and holds 76 men. It is a four-story wooden and brick structure that is located on Fraternity Drive. Beta Sig wholeheartedly participates in the many activities at U.M.R. Our scholastic efforts often prove to be successful as shown by this most recent semester when their ac- tive gradepoint ranked second among all fraternities. They strive hard to do well in intramural athletics and are currently in third place in the overall intramural stand- ings. The general goal of the Chapter is to achieve overall excellence and to develop pride in the system of brotherhood, both at the local level and nationally. Once again they compete for the Fraternity’s highest honor, the Founder’s Cup, which has made its home in Rolla for many years now. The Brothers feel they have the in- side track to once again obtain the award because they have seen fit to bring “Rolla” to many campuses, notably Columbia, Western Illinois, and Purdue. Spilled be- verages, ingested liquor, and severe diso- rientation have long been a Rolla trademark that the chapter has worked very hard to introduce everywhere. Locally, the Phi Kaps were permitted to donate playoff kegs in many major sports, including football, soccer, basketball, and handball (next year’s goal: the Ultimate Frisbee finals). And, as every year, their frolicking freshmen were swinging grue- some shillelaghs at model snakes, causing headaches for the B. G. boys and crushed rubber for Board Reps. First Row Jeff Gilbert, C. Beginning last fall, many of the members have gotten very involved with campus activities, including Student Union Board, KMNR-FM, the Missouri Miner, Wesley Foundation, Climbing Club, Raiders, and numerous honoraries. Despite all this extra-curricular activity, the initiated members were able to produce the highest G.P.A. of all fraternities on campus last fall. They also initiated a large number of associate members. They were very happy to bring in these brothers and offer them the chance to share in the “Pi Kapp Experience”. They then proceeded to recruit several new associates for the spring semester and offer them their unique “no-pledging, no-hazing” atmosphere where everyone has a say and everyone shares the load. Motherhood also came to Pi Kappa Phi as their derelict cat Gonzo had kittens this spring. Brother Dan is still trying to find the father. Maintaining solvency, they are pressing ahead with plans for renovation of the house including, among others, plans for a new roof. They give special thanks to their present and future alumni for their support in this effort. The Greek Week Carnival booth was a “smash”, car smash that is, and was very successful. Many brothers have graduated this past May and they will be missed. All in all it has been a very good year for Pi Kappa Phi and they look forward to ’81-’82 with great anticipation. In the near future they will obtain a much needed ice machine. They are en- joying the benefits of this year’s work and are looking forward to the same success next year. Many different achievements have come their way. The areas of campus leadership, community service, campus- wide competition and intramural sports have been strong points. The Teke’s in campus involvement include presidents and vice-presidents in may key campus organizations. Campus and community service receive constant attention at TKE. Their projects include a chariot pull for Muscular Dystro- phy, benefits for St. Judes Hospital, Theta Tau Ugly Man Charity, and a wide range of service projects. In campus-wide competition TKE has been a consistent leader. They received many high awards in competitions ranging from the Greek Sing to the St. Pat’s games. Intramural sports are more than just an outlet from school work. Emphasis has been placed on full participation and win- ning attitudes which explains the great competitiveness of the Teke’s. While striving to uphold a good outward image, efforts have been made for internal development at TKE. House maintenance and improvements, greater financial security, better chapter management and a closer brotherhood have been stressed as their fraternity membership climbs above 100 . Theta Xi Fraternity was founded as the first professional engineering fraternity in the United States on April 29, 1864. The Alpha Psi Chapter of Theta Xi, here in Rolla, was founded on October 8, 1949. Presently, we are thirty-two me mbers strong and are looking forward to a full house of forty members in the fall of 1981. They are a young house and maintain a close family atmosphere with plenty of activities year ’round (including a water skiing trip this summer!). Since they are mostly sophomores and freshmen, they will become stronger in the coming years. Their little sisters, the Blue Irises, are eleven women strong and the will grow with Theta Xi to become recognized on campus in the fall of 1981. Theta Xi is a social fraternity as well as an engineering fraternity and they take pride in the suc- cess of their all-campus parties as well as their private parties. Originally the Grubstakers Club at M.S.M., Triangle is one of the oldest orga- nizations on the U.M.R. Campus . Located in the Old Rock House on the corner of Ninth Street and State Street, Triangle has an outstanding record of leadership and participation in campus activities ranging from academics to intramurals. Ser- vice projects, campus activities, intramu- rals, studying and other activities took up much time for the members of the Eta Theta chapter. Zetas hold offices in many organizations including Student Council, the Student Union Board, campus publications and numerous others. In other areas, such as Greek activities, Zeta took an active role, placing first in the musical division during the Greek Sing, and also won overall Greek Week in the sorority division. In the area of service, Zetas devoted many hours to their national philanthro- phy, the Association for Retarded Citizens. In recognition of a fund raising event for A.R.C., the Rolla Area Chamber of Commerce presented Zeta Tau Alpha with an award. First Row. Hopefully everyone will be pleased with the results. To be certain that all living units were equally represented, several notices were sent to each housing unit informing them that pictures would be taken for any event which they wanted co- vered in the 1981 Rollamo. We simply requested that appoint- ments be made through the editor. Photographers were then sent out to cover the event. The group pictures of each living unit were taken under the same system. Fair representation was given to everyone who responded by the deadline. Special thanks are extended to the following living units for they were most cooperative helping us to put this new, innovative system into operation: Kappa Delta, Me Anerney — House Two, Second Floor TJ., Theta Xi, Fourth Floor TJ, Manor Inn, Kappa Alpha Psi and Sigma Xi Mu (good luck with your new frat!) We apologize to Sigma Xi Mu for not being able to publish their officer picture, but we could not develop the roll of color film they sent (our dark room is only set up for black and white). Thanks to all, Caroline and Jim, editors. i s CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT JS N,v r ' M , n Sk ' i Ttl n ) ( - - w k4 i V aI [ 1 1 1 ■ 1 ? i kKiHB hi Alpha Phi Omega sr 267 Alpha Sigma Mu American Foundrymen’s Society 268 269 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronsutics American Society of Civil Engineering American Society of Petroleum Engineers 271 Baptist Student Union 273 Beta Chi Sigma 276 277 C. Who’s Who The following students were selected to appear in the 1981 edition of Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges. These Students were selected by a campus nominating committee and editors of the annual directory on the basis of service to the community, academic achievement, leadership in extracurricular activities, and future potential. Greg Grindinger “ I dread success. To have succeeded is to have finished one’s business on earth, like the male spider who is killed by the female the moment he has succeeded in his courtship. I like a state of continual becoming, with a goal in front and not behind. — Bernard Shaw Marilyn Kolbet “The talent of success is nothing more than doing what you can do well; and doing well whatever you do, without a thought of fame. ’’ — Henry Wadsworth Longfellow 324 Hal Tharp “ Coming to college has opened my eyes to many things I do not know, but l feel better off because of it. Bonnie Boland “Those only are happy who have fair minds fixed on some object other than their own happiness; on the happiness of others, some improvement of mankind, even on some art or pursuit, followed not as means, but as itself an ideal end. Aiming thus at something else, they find happiness by the way. ” — John Stuart Mills 325 Rosemary Emhoff “You see things as they are and ask ‘Why?’ But 1 dream things that never were and ask ‘Why not?”’ — George Bernard Shaw Mark Nealon “Love is not so simple and malleable as many suppose. Put it in prison and it dies. Restrict it and it turns into hate. Force it and it disappears. You cannot will love, nor even control it. You can only guide its expression. It comes and goes according to those qualities in life that invite it or deny its presence. 326 I .. .« - Patrick Thompson “Well done is better than well said.” — Benjamin Franklin 327 Michael W. Bennett “My feelings about UMR have changed drastically over the past few years: Freshman: detested it Sophomore: indifferent Junior: liked it Senior: loved it Present: wish I was back Enjoy all the good things UMR has to offer; a great education, fantastic friends, fun times, drunken stupors, football championships, ect. For when it is all over, you have to work the rest of your life!” 328 The Rollamo staff would also like to congratulate the following students for their outstanding achievements, whose pictures were unavailable. David Frankenbach: Before you let yourself go completely be sure you can get your- self back. The best things in life may be free, but things money can buy aren’t bad either. We are about as happy as we make up our minds to be. You may be able to take time off, but you can never put it back. A person is not old until regrets take the place of dreams. Robert M. Special thanks goes to Tom Beard, for without his help in getting me involved in the yearbook. Credit goes to Patty Slattery and Mike Nix for their efforts in the Activities and Sports sections. I would like to express special appreciation to Rose Emhoff, Lori Troester, and Karen Gehlert who all turned their sections in early. Making my job much easier. Also to Caroline Sturm goes special thanks for her layout of the Living Units section. The following people have spent the last year working as assistant editors on the yearbook staff, Jim Engemann, Diane Schaefer, John Tripi, Kay Runge, and Kathy Buhr. I hope they will continue to work for the Rollamo Yearbook and not let their talents and experience go to waste. Congratulations go to Tony Park for being this years top photographer. Thank you for your dedication and putting up with my last minute requests. I would like to thank the rest of the photography staff, especially Dan Booher (photography editor), without your hard work and organiza- tion, the Rollamo would have been nothing but words. To my fraters at Tau Kappa Epsilon I owe many thanks for making my college career at UMR very enjoyable. Above all else, I would like to thank my parents and family for all their help and support through the past four years. 1 hope you will find part of yourself within these pages of the Rollamo 1981 and that it will bring back good memories. James W. Lynch, Jr. Editor-in-Chief, Rollamo 1981
