University of Missouri Rolla FOUNDED 1870 As University of Missouri School of Mines Metallurgy On August 26 th of this year Chan- cellor BispMnghoff addressed the faculty at the General Faculty Meeting. In his speech he touched oh almost all of the subjects presently affecting UMR. His talk was ex- tremely interesting, but rather long. Because of the length, the Chancellor ' s speech will be presented in a series of articles to be run in the coming weeks. This is the first of that series. GENERAL FACULTY fail, Dr . Bisplinghofi says. MEETING âIn regard to the complaints August 26, 1975 of students who are being Chancellorâs Remarks housed in property we leased this summer,â he continues Since I reported to you last December, I continue to believe strongly that UMR, this par- ticular institution and in- stitutions tike it, is going to be presented with its greatest opportunity in the next decade. By institutions like it, I mean those institutions that have a central core of science and technology and a commitment to apply science and technology to societyâs problems. During the balance of the lime today I will report to you on progress during the past .year together with my assessment of the year ahead and beyond. ENROLLMENT- At the present time it appears as though UMRâs fall enrollment bottomed out in 1974. The present 1975 count is 4,245 compared with 4,006 reported in 1974. By close of late registration, it is very possible that our total 1975 fall count could exceed 4,300 with a graduate enrollment in the neighborhood of 475. We would thus be close to the 1973 fail figure and, hopefully, well on our way to achieving levels of enrollment of the early 19 ' 70âs. Following an apparent national trend, graduate enrollment is declining at UMR. A decrease of about 10 per cent is noted from 1974 to 1975. Last year there were 376 M.S. and 152 âall staff members are doing engineering- the rolla way Engineering students from the University of Missouri-Rolla will tell about âEngineeringâ The Rolla Wayâ at âRolla Nightâ Thursday, Oct. 2, at the Engineersâ Club of St. Louis, 4359 Lindeil Blvd. St. Louis area high school and college students, their parents and teachers are invited to attend. Since that time there has been a considerable difference of opinion regarding the meaning of energy in- dependence. an even greater difference as to how the goal of independence should be achieved. To some, energy independence is a condition in which the U. S. receives no energy through imports, and it produces all of its energy domestically. To others energy independence fs a condition in which the U. S. imports some energy to meet its requirements but only to acceptable levels of political and economic vulnerability. The definition of independence, the criteria for availability, and the technical methods and advancements for meeting it are central to the choice ol a U. S. energy strategy and the theme of this con- ference, âTwo Years Progress Towards Self Reliance.â The purpose of the conference is to provide social scientists, scientists, and engineers a means lor rapid communication of their most recent research in the field of energy and to offer practical solutions to energy related problems for govern- ment and industry.) These remarks are from the preface to the extended ab- stracts for the second annual UMR MEC Conference on Energy and were written by Dr. J. Deraid Morgan, the con- ference director. Organized jointly by the Governorâs Missouri Energy council within the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the faculty of the University of Missouri-Rolla and Continental Oil Company, the energy conference was held on this campus October 7, 8, and 9. Perhaps the most pressing issue in the world today, the energy issue was 1 looked at and discussed from nearly every viewpoint. Engineers and scientists came from all parts of the country to discuss the problems involved with energy and to review the latest research done in this field. Although the conference was open to students ar no charge, few students took advantage of the opportunity. Nearly 100 papers were presented by their authors, and were divided into various sessions according to their subject matter. The subheadings for each session were: Wind and Solar Energy, Energy Management, Chemical Energy, Energy Management, Chemical Energy Conversio n, Economics of Energy Nuclear Energy and Power, Energy Systems, Energy Resources and Energy Environment. Energy needs around the world are increasing, while our supply of fossil fuels is steadily decreasing. Much of the research being done today, as showed by the papers delivered at the conference, is concerned with alternatives to our present sources of energy, while many researchers are also interested in better conservation of energy in ourjpresent systems. Many people take for granted that the present energy crisis will eventually be taken care of. The feeling is that if we have the technology to put a man on the moon we can surely keep our lights burning. According to Bisplinghoff âthings are going to get worse before they get better 4 . He predicted two things; that the U.S. is entering into a period of declining standard of Jiving and a period oi hostile action from foreign countries. Time is becoming a critical factor. Within the next ten years we will see a great shift in the economy. Areas such as New England, heavily dependent on foreign oil can already be seen slipping into a depression. Unemployment in Rhode Island is up to 15 per cent. These facts are a result of scarcity and higher fuel prices. Eventually the government will have to force people to lower their standard of living. The period of hostile action from foreign countries (as predicted ) should foe something of concern. We have a heavy dependence on foreign oil now and use of thisoU is increasing. Solar Energy News { EARTH NEWS) - New residential and commercial developments along Califor- nia ' s i t 100-mile coast line, as of 1977, may be required to in- corporate solar heating and cooling units. Thatâs the recommendation of the state Coastal Commission, which holds jurisdiction over development of the coastal zone . The Commission will recommend to the state legislature that specila tax incentives be provided to all developers who incorporate solar heating into their buddings. It has also recom- mended that local governments along the cost pass so alled âsun rights ordinances to ensure that all home owners solar technology isnât readily available by January 1st, 1977, new buildings will have to be designed to incorporate solar systems when they become available. The recommendation, if adopted by the legislature, will affect thousands of new coastal developments when the present near-moratorium on building is lifted. The Commission predicts that large-scale solar development could save bet- ween 50 and 80 per cent of natural gas requirements for heating and cooling purposes. In the near future, the power in your home may come to you from outer space. Huge solal cells orbiting 23.000 miles above the earth would gather solar umr has hard road ahead The following is a summary of the Chancellor ' s to faculty December 9, 1975. Enrollment â the Chancellor feels that this is the principal ground for optimism in the future. After bottoming out in 1974, UMR achieved a 9 per cent increase in enrollment in the fall, with good possibilities for the same in the 1976 77 academic year, Also UMR had a 4 per cent increase in graduate enrollment. Housing â the Chancellor calls this the Achilles ' heel of ,UMRâ as we reach for in- creased enrollment. Negotiations are in progress for {Thomas Jefferson residence hall and is the first priority for student; the second being Continuation of some form of temporary housing. With more students opting for university housing and the elasticity of the jRolla community to absorgb students in private housing decreasing, Thomas Jefferson residence hall becomes in- creasingly important. The chancellor feels that the chances of having TJ on some :erms by next fall are better :han 50 50. Placement â the fall semester showed an increase in interviewers from last spring, but the tightness and rigidity in the market for graduates is still apparent. Job offers are coming slowly, but with approximately 220 employer visits expected in the spring, there is confidence that this year ' s graduates will be placed. Mid-Fiscal Year Budget S. talus â U MR has had to deal with nearly a million dollar reduction in funds this year, and is anticipating $437,000 in reallocations in the next fiscal year to meet projected state appropriations, Reduction we re made in the work force, con- centrating mainly on ad- ministrative and support staff. The Chancellor felt that it was no longer possible to reduce the E E funds, as had been done in the past. A healthy science and engineering school, in his view, requires an E E percentage of nearly 30 per cent, while UMRâs has dropped to below 20 per cent. The University had devised four plans to cope with the anticipated gap between the budget request and Coor- dinating Boardâs recom- mendation to the Governor. The difference between these two amounts is over $11,000. Two of the plans call for a $30 semester fee increase, two call for no fee increase. The Chancellor stated that the Governor ' s recom- mendation to the legislature was even lower . than an- ticipated, lower than the four plans under study. University of Missouri-Rolla âThis midwest bastion of engineering and science education situated in the scenic Missouri Ozarks and consisting of some 4500 undergraduate and graduate students has seen significant changes in the past five years. In response to the national energy shortage, the coal pile which fuels the university power plant is now under twenty four hour armed guard. New students are advised to steer clear of this area because, in keeping with long standing policy, the actions of the university police on guard may be entirely unpredictable. UMR is one of the fortunate in- stitutions â they at least have effect. While the number a incoming students has levele off (and acutally decline recently) the number of ad ministrators has quadrupled ij response. UMR still has its compute and access to Columbia i computer, but doesnât havi enough allotted money to us them. The Engineering School once unrivaled in the midwest now competes with Columbiaâ! ever-increasing engineerinf curriculum. UMR is rapidly becoming a leader in thij Humanities and Social Scierj ces, however, in spite ol the fac! that it has the smallest buildinf allotted to those areas of an; university its size in thi country. One interesting aspect o UMR is the appearance of iti employees. They are suall; dressed in shirt and tie, or semi formal dresses, even janitors o- waitresses. This apparentl; ambiguous circumstance i Chancellor Bisplinghoff Education in Question This is the last in the series of articles on Chancellor Bisplinghoff ' s talk to the General Facultv. LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTUREâ Looking forward I would have to conclude that my view of the general outlook for the future is mixed, but generally optimistic. Insofar a s additional support from state appropriations is concerned, I am not sanguine about quick relief from the current down- ward budget slide. In spite of the severity of energy, non- renewable natural resource and comparable figure being about 375,000. Thus, for the first time in years, higher education will cease to be a growth industry. There is thus nothing in the total college-age population statistics that presages enrollment in- creases in higher education. These very statistics are, of course, also followed closely by âI do not see engineering and science accorded a higher priority in our state system.â depend simply on the law of supply and demand. Radical increases in students knocking at our door will require radical increases in demand for our graduates in comparison with the demand for other graduates. This demand has in the past been made by govern- ment, universitites and in- dustry. It is not likely that there will be radical increases in demand for graduates by government and universitites in the foreseeable future since some attentuation in spending will be required of both if stdte and national governments are to remain solvent. Radical Engendered Species Coeds need love tool Dear Editor, As another party weekend approaches, the social situation on campus persists. Next weekend for St. Patâs âim- ports will flood Holla. I j ⢠⢠Dear Sirs: Like most Miner football fans, I, too, have become disturbed at the absence of cheerleaders at football games. 1 have read many letters purporting to explain this gross violation of athletic tradition, but most of are too arrogant to offer a plausible explanation. The girls state that they are âoffendedâ by Miner fans and that they donât want to be treated as âsex objects.â This simply is just not the case. Firstly, if the girls donât want to be treated to lewd and lascivious remarks, to be ogled About Coeds Editor: In reply to the letter fronr Miss A. Thatâs not tc say that the adjectives âdirtyâ âragged â, âsloppyâ, anc âuncombedâ apply to the average coed when theyâre no- wearing skirts; or that a legs watcher is really interested in e piece of ass. The point is thai skirts, with the accompanying legs, usually look nicer thar other forms of dress. If this makes me a male chauvemst, ! readily accept that label. A male Sam Emu No Cheerleaders? Here ' s Why Dear Sir: After hearing many disgruntled male Miners comment on the lack or absence of cheerleaders this fall, I would like to offer an explanation. We all know that UMR cheerleaders have been given little respect in past years. Undoubtedly the numerous lewd, degrading, and ridiculing remarks about âthose UMR cheerleadersââ have discouraged many a freshman candidate. After ail, who wants to be laughed at? Who wants to show their ignorance by trying to bring spirit and dignity to an obviously ludicrous job? It is also a well-known fact that the student body gives minimal vocal support to cheerleaders at football games. Isnât it rather ridiculous to complain that we have no one to lead our cheers, when we have always refused to follow them anyway? It is my suspicion that some petulant Miners are grieving simply because they wonât be seeing some girlâs behind flashing by in a seires of cartwheels. Is it so incredible that fewer females are willing to submit themselves for that sort of cheap entertainment? Strangely enough, everyone seems to be complaining about âno cheerleaders,â but no one is asking âwhy not?â I think we all know. In the past it has been a job yielding little or no thanks, little or no respect, little or no support, and an abundance of harassments and obscenities to those few willing to put forth the effort. Finally this year, no girl was willing to put herself in such a position. Perhaps we should be glad â that the prevailing âspiritâ among UMR coeds is one of maturity and dignity. Sincerely A Coed Herself features U. Housing 1975 An In-depth Look .There has been much concern and controversy over the Jniversity housing facilities this year. There are some important [uestions that need to be asked; Was the University prepared for he number of housing contracts they signed? ; Did the University mislead students in the representation of available ousing? amd Is University housing worth its high cost? After a while, the conversation turned to the living conditions of the apartment, and I couldnât believe whaUhey were saying. (the first two times the man turned down the temperature in the hot water heater so not as much hot water would be lost! ), and exterior lights have gone unrepiaced for a week or more. It is obvious the maintenance man should be returned, but even a petition signed by 46 of 48 renters did no good. Repairs that are made are useless. The Mizzou vs, Rolla Recently I happened to be in Columbia, Missouri. Driving by the married student apart ments, I was surprised by the condition of the place, so much so that I stopped in. New in- sulated windows were installed or being installed in ad the apartments and everything on the outside that could be painted had a fresh coat of paint on it Being curious 1 asked one of the tenants for some information and received the following: He paid llOO-month for a two bedroom apartment which included the free use of a washer and a dryer. Once a year on the outside of the building, the woodwork around the windows, the panels beneath the windows, the doors to the apartment, laundry room, and garbage area, and the water- spouts and raingutters were painted. If the tenant wished it, his name would appear on a list and the inside of the apartment would be painted by the school, but the tenant might have to wait from a week to several months for this to be done depending on the length of the list of names. Ending our brief interview, I was told that the maintenance was âgood,â l ⢠' W.Vr V s : jif v I i v if, i J : | I LvjjJ ,4 j The University ' s View on Housing ' A temporary solution ' An Interview with Jess Zinfc Few people are happy with the new housing being provided for this year. Let ' s look at it from the University ' s view r point : The housing office had two choices : either inform incoming students that no University housing was available, or try to find accomodations for the 300 irvir ' srtn wait inf list Indications students wouldn ' t come to school here So, the search for accomodations began. During freshmen orientation, new students were told that the dormitories were filled, but that every effort was being made to acquire housing. It was at this time that many students were led to believe that Thomas Jefferson Hall would be the new leased from private indi vidua to house students for the currei year. Mr. Jess Zink, of Auxilar Enterprises, admits that th newiy-aquired residence hah are, in some respects, not th same as the older resident halls; but feels that with in provements that are bein made, thev will soon be ud 1 Housing a features special - page 4 m, University of Missouri - Rolla Housing hope for a solution Officials at the University of Missouri-RoHa are continuing to work vigorously to find solutions to the student housing problems in Rolla. ' it is generally accepted that without a permanent solution to the housing problem, an upper limit to enrollment will be established says UMR Chancellor Raymond L. Rispimghoff, â and we are probably at or near that enrollment level at this time. Considering UMR ' s mission to provide more technically trained graduates to fulfill the nations growing needs, we should provide a maximum flexibility of enrollment 1 Discussions of future student housing considerations are under way with University wide officials in Columbia and they have expressed a desire to fall,â Dr. Bisplinghoff says, âIn regard to the complaints of students who are being housed in property we leaser this summer he continues âall staff members are doing their best to solve studeni problems on an individua basis . It is our policy to considei the complaints with cooperative and conciliator} attitude and work out individua solutions in the best interest o: each student . Housing on campu and in the Holla community h severely limited and althougl we are making progress, thesi adjustments will take time am will require the patience of al the concerned individuals 1 University Purchases T. J. An agreement has been reached between UMR and the Connecticut Mutual Insurance Co. to purchase the Thomas Jefferson Residence Hall for $1,130,000. The dormitory is located two blocks north of the main campus at isth and Rolla Streets. It was Urst opened as a private residence hall in Sep- tember, 1966, but was closed to university students in 1973. The purchase is being financed through a mortgage and unrestricted and redesignated private gifts to the UMR Development Fund, ,l This is a major achievement for our campus UMR Chancellor Raymond L. Bisplinghoff said, âand we owe a great debt of gratitude to all those who have worked so hard to assist in acquiring this facility. This is particularly true ol those private donors who helped to make this pur- chase possible Bisplinghoff said that he feels this acquisition removes a major stumbling block to UMR T s continuing growth. âLast fail we were severely handicapped by inadequate housing. We know some students did not enroll at UMR as a result. If we had not ob- tained this dormitory we feel certain this fairs enrollment would have been severely curtailed ToOpen in September Once all papers are signed and legal arrangements completed, UMR will begin work on renovation required before Thomas Jefferson can be opened for use next September. This renovation is expected to cost about $256,000 and will be financed through an internal, short term loan involving other development funds. Both this and the original mortgage will be paid back out of income from the dormitory. No state ap- propriated money is involved. Without Thomas Jefferson, UMR has dormitory space for 611 students. As of this date, the housing office reports that it already has more than 850 housing requests, 240 more than present space. Last fairs housing shortage w r as so acute that space in private facilities off campus was leased temporarily to house about 300 students. Joseph D. Wollard, UMR business officer, reports that 4 subject to availability this fall, these leased facilities will be con- sidered only if there exists a need and all permanent space is filled Thomas Jefferson Residence Hail has double occupancy space for 524 students, plus space for six resident assistants and a housing manager. Its room and board charges will be slightly higher than for other UMR dormitories. Double occupancy rales in Thomas Jefferson will be $1,350 for the academic year, compared to $1,250 in the other UMR dor- mitories. Single room oc- cupancy is $1,530 in the new hall compared to $1,430. Summer occupancy in Thomas Jefferson is $370 for a single room and $330 for a double room, com- pared to $335 and $295 in other Rolla dormitories. Extras Cost More The slightly higher fee for the new facility is to cotnver added extras such as air conditioning, free parking, elevators, swimming pool, lounges on each floor and the basement level which includes physical fitness and game rooms. Thomas Jefferson will be operated by auxiliary en- terprises. The design of the facility offers flexibility to consider as signment by clusters to accommodate men, women and special interest groups such as graduate and inernational students. The Miners seemed to be plagued by Murphy ' s Law: If anything can go wrong, it will. Blocked punts, fumbles, interceptions, and other miscues hounded the Miners constantly. Injuries to such key players as All American tight end Merle Dillow, running back Steve Townsell, and wide receiver Stu Dunlop crippled the team at times. They beat Central 74-64 in Warrensburg, and then on February 23, they travelled to Springfield where they humiliated the Bears by a score of 83-66. As the MIAA champs, the Miners represented the conference in the NCAA College Division II South Central Regional Tournament held in Louisiana. Grambling College knocked UMR out of the competition in the first round by beating them 67-61. In the consolation game, the Miners faced Lincoln and lost in overtime. It was a very good year for basket- ball in Rolla. The team lost only one game at home while winning twelve. Their overall record of 18-9 is one of the best in recent years at UMR. 113 Rifle Team Finishes 8-1 Top row: Ruth Francis, David Oakes, MSG Screeton, Bottom row: Gary Shrewsberry, Mike May, Gary Mueller, Pat McCann, Chris McCann, UfTIR Pistol Team Left to Right: Steve Allen, Bud Reynolds, Mike May, Mark Masnor, Paul McCoy, Ken Brugioni. The Miner wrestling team was short on per- sonnel at the start of the year, but it got worse as the season progressed. Injuries kept five of the top grapplers off the mats for most of the year. For the season, the Miners finished 2-8 in dual matches despite the fact that they never entered a match with an entry in every weight class. Although beginning the year with a nucleus of good ballplayers, the team suffered from a lack of depth. UMR was unable to combine good pitch- ing, hitting, and defense. When the pitching and hitting was good, the defense faltered and vice versa. Numerous one-run losses were an indication that the team was much better than their record showed. With a young ballclub this year, many players will be around for sever- al more years. 119 Varsity Golf Left to Right: Royce Vessel!, Tom Tatrnan, Coach Mercier, Wes Goodson, Mike Kieffer UfTlR Cross Country 121 K Front row: Dave Qrtmann, Larry Oliver, Mike Ludwig, Ivan Rodriquez, Tom Hancock, Joe Vitale, Ron Goedeker, Tom Schnieder, Jim Matejcie, Jim Keebler, Back row: Bill Dale, Tom Wetteroth, Mike Richardson, Rich Link, Steve Svatic, Roger Brennon, Dom Lampe, Lee Whitebay, John Feldman, Don Brockelmann, Steve Schaeffler, Pete Telthorst, Ken Jenkerson, Missing: Paul Telthorst. 122 123 Waterpolo Club Bottom row: Phil Henry, Darrell Taylor, Paul Vetter, Bill Kroeger, Mike Norberg. Our secretary was asked by the ROLLAMO office to write a paragraph on our fraternity during the 1975-76 school year. After considerable thought, he asked the members what should be put in the yearbook article. His inquiry brought forth two points. First, no one could decide just exactly what to put in the article, and more importantly, it was brought to his attention that no one ever reads the articles. Instead, every- one looks at the picture. Therefore, our secretary refuses to write an article which he doesn ' t precisely know what to write about and which no one will read anyway. Striving to impress upon our members the im- portance of becoming a well-rounded individ- ual, AEPi participated in the IFC Fall Clean- Up, staged a work day at Boystown, and start- ed plans for a traffic safety project with the Rolla Police Department. 196 We started the year off socially with a rush function with ZTA. To add to our fun and excitement, we became lumberjacks for IFC Sing, built a St. Pat ' s float, and collapsed our chariot in the chariot race at the Greek Week games. All of these events were followed by action-packed, fun-filled parties. To break our monotony, we finished the semester by achieving the highest fraternity gradepoint and most improved gradepoint awards from the IFC. 197 ALPHA PHI ALPHA Row 1, 1 to r: James Brown, Terry Logan, Dewey Pruitt, Thomas Cleveland, Robert Jackson. We believe ourselves to be instruments of communi- cation and have been delivering a message of brotherly love through the songs we sing, the steps we take, and in our everyday endeavors. Our house is always open and visitors are always welcome. 199 BETA SIGmn PSI Row 1, I to r: Tony A vena, Chris Hays, Va! This past year we captured first place in intramural volleyball, and actively participated in all other sports. We again showed our strong St. Pat ' s spirit by building the third place float and a superb cudgel that placed third. The brothers of Beta Sig also worked to- gether to design and construct a me- morial bar and louge in the house. Our Little Sisters planned various social activities throughout the year which included a sock-hop and a square dance. 201 DELTA SIGfTlA PHI Left front: Edward Dixon, Ted Wiesehan, Bill Brunkhorst, David Milster, Tim Williams, J. The brothers of Delta Sigma Phi have overcome another year of the Rolla Blues here at UMR. Starting the year out with 36 new pledges, things have continued to roll thanks to rush chair- man Don Cline and others. John Dolan captured the trophy for the pie-eating contest at Homecoming and the house took second place in the twelveth man award. Todd Davis was the proud re- cipient of the outstanding intramural wrestler award and the bowlers led by Eddie Dixon took first place. The house also won the Gamma Alpha Delta award for planning and execu- tion of projects. 203 DELTA TAU DELTA Row 1, 1 to r: Joseph Morales, Rick Klien, Heidi, Gary Underwood. Delta Tau Delta has been active in school and community affairs this year. We held our annual can-goods collec- tion drive for the needy during Christ- mas and also organized the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign for Rolla. We participated in GAD, painting and in- sulating the homes of elderly people as our project. We know we ' re out in the sticks, but if you ' re ever out here, stop in. 204 205 Once again, Kappa Alpha had a very satisfying year. For the ninth consecutive year, KA placed first in intramural wrestling. The brothers also did well in tennis, softball, swimming, horseshoes, and bowling. KA ' s excelled academ ically and were active in campus affairs. KA undertook several all-house work projects with Gamma Alpha Delta, and received two awards for outstanding participation. Again, KA held the annual Christmas party for the needy children, and was actively involved in the successful Muscular Dystrophy Drive. Kappa Alpha ' s proudest achievement this year was the initiation of 21 outstanding men into the fraternity. Our 14th annual Benefit Chicken Din- ner was met with great success. We were able to do- nate about $500 each to the State School 23 and the Cerebral Palsy School. The famous Lambda Chi gang kidnapped the Rolla city mayor and chief-of-police. They were held for a ransom of food which was donated to 20 needy families in Rolla. We skated with the children of State School 23. At Halloween time, we invited the kid s over for cake and ice cream with a few games thrown in for fun. We started the year off by welcoming 35 pledges, the largest pledge class on campus and in our na- tional fraternity. This has also been a very good year for sports. So far we have taken a first in football, handball, and archery and a second place in bas- ketball. We plan to finish very high in intramurals. Our public relations has been outstanding especially within the community. We received the Out- standing Community Service from the Rolla Chamber of Commerce along with collecting over $1000 for the American Lung Association by partici- pating in a spirit run to Columbia. 221 Tau Kappa Epsilon ' s major accomplishment during the 1975-76 school year was the con- struction of a three story addition to the TKE house. Construction began during the summer and was completed in January 1976. Finishing touches, including paneling in the basement and a bar, were added in March. Governor Bond formally dedicated the new house during St. Pat ' s party weekend. More then fifty alumni from across the country returned for the occa- sion. TKE was well represented in intramurals as they finished first in their league in all five ma- jor sports. A championship in soccer and a third place finish overall capped off a success- ful year. Other accomplishments for the year included winning Greek Week for the fifth year in a row, placing second in IFC Sing, hosting the Second annual TKE Mid-America Softball Tournament, and completing two major service projects. With such an in- crease in manpower, the Chapter participated in many special events, such as several community work projects, a party for chil- dren attending the Rolla State School, an active par- ticipation in intramurals, and despite the number of members, the Chapter man- aged to take the APO Blood Drive Trophy. 229 Triangle, a social as well as a professional fraternity, is a brother- hood of engineers, architects and scientists. Its membership has grown to the point of expansion into an Annex next doorâ Triangle West. We are active in the Gamma Alpha Delta sponsored work pro- jects and recently aided in remodelling a building in St. James for the senior citizens of that community. Most of the complaints have been fair and just, poor copy, bad pictures, and too often large amounts of blank space have been some of the reasons. I personally agree with most of these complaints, this is one of the reasons why I wanted the editorship for the 1975-76 Rollamo. With this book, I hope all complaints can be stopped. There has been a lot more work put into the planning, photo- grapher, and general layout than there has been in the last several years. So for the few who read this ending note, I give you the best possible yearbook that I and this staff could possibly put together under the current financial situations. For those who believe that the yearbook should be optional, no possible way. Just as an example, Western Illinois University has nearly 13,000 students, of which only 1,800 buy yearbooks. The cost of their book which is the same size as this one, without the color division pages and end sheets, is $17. So how many students on this campus would buy a yearbook for $17. I ' ll leave it at that. This book would be nothing without the hard work of Mark Lorenz and Kent Bagnall, a special thanks to both of them for their help and photography. Thanks also to Glenn Johney, best of luck with the 1976-77 Rollamo. And Jackie DeThorne, Mike DiNapoli, Paula Marcellus, the bobbsey twins Steve Ernst and Russel Brazeal, and all the other photographers. This book could not function without the help and encouragement of our ad- visor, Lance Williams, take care council person and get out of the racket before they corrupt you. Pischel Yearbooks with Paul Coram have been super, its been a pleasure. Steven Studios with their wierd photographers have been great, thanks for the monkey. And to UMR, the last 6 years have been special and even fun years, to you, pull your head out. Se La Vie Nic Neumann â 1975-76 Rollamo Editor Yiamiai Spli tt M tr | It fl ff H Jk 11 fl Cl |ff73 i
