Every year a few freshmen decide that all C. E. subjects cannot be as distressing as Elementary Surveying and cast their lot with the Civil Depart- ment. They soon discover that such courses as Surveying and Highway Materials lab only serve to 'introduce thereal professional studies-Stresses in Framed Structures, Concrete Design, Bridge De- sign, Water Supply and Sewage, etc. The department's activities 'are centered in Harris Hall, a sturdy dolemite building completed in 1940, but the department's surveyors and high- way planners can be found making their minute calculations anywhere from the Nagogimi Road to the Bench Mark on Pine Street. Lab facilities in Harris Hall cover work in Hydraulics, Materials Testing, Soil Mechanics, and Bacteriology. Head of the C. E.'s is Prof. I. B. Butler, who has been with M.S.M. since 1920. His special interest is Hydraulics, but Prof. Butler has been spending his time of late thinking up new ways to partition the rooms in Harris Hall. Leader in the Structural Engineering field is the Skipper , Prof. E. W. Carlton, staunch proponent of Professional Engineering.
