Board of Regents Appointed by the Governor of the State with the approval of the State Senate for six year terms, the members of the Board of Regents have many duties to perform. The most important work of the Board is the election of faculty and administrative officials of the college. The Board determines all fees to be charged, and the members authorize the purchases of school supplies and the improvement of the physical plant of the college. Classification of the faculty, the approving and granting of certificates and diplomas, the passing on all recommendations of faculty committees regarding curriculum, and the diciplinary rules or negotiations governing students generally are a few of the many duties which the Board performs. New appointments will be made during the year 1937. , These public spirited men donate their time and energy toward the betterment of our college, expecting no remuneration in return. The service rendered by this body is to be commended by all. SAM E. TRIMBL-E, Springfield President R. W. ANDERSON, Mount Vernon if V wa 1 ' ,,,,,, J. W. SEWALL, Carthage Page IQ B. F. We hear a great deal in these days about char- acter training in our schools and colleges and well we may for that feature of training can scarcely be overemphasized. One is reminded in this con- nection of the curt and drastic dictum of that great educator and statesman, Woodrow Wilson, who once said that character is the by-product of duty done. Self-respect is basic in character and one cannot build self-respect and character on the basis of slip-shod Work. In view of the fact that most people are extremely anxious to get the most for their money in any market it is rather amazing that some students President Roy Ellis . . born Seymour, Missouri, March 9, 1888 . . STC student 1909-1911 . . A.B. and B.S. in Education from Missouri Uni- versity, 1914 . . A.M. from Har- vard, 1917 . . If one is an artist at getting by he may be able at times to deceive even a very clever teacher as to his achievement in learning. It is lamentable that he should deceive his teachers but it is tragic that he should deceive and cheat himself. In the silent chemistry of events the relentless law of compensation will strike the balance sooner' or later. The World has a way of catching up with those who base their hopes upon the shifty philosophy of getting by. Whatever is worth doing is Worth doing well. ROY ELLIS.
