The 1980 “Lion’s By A Landslide” homecoming was kicked off on Thursday, October 30, with a pep rally spon¬ sored by the Downtown Joplin Merchants Association. The Cheerleaders, Coach Frazier, and the senior football players were featured along with the homecoming royalty candidates. The 17 candidates, sponsored by various organizations on campus, were taken to Beefmasters for lunch, featured on KTVJ’s Carol Parker Show, and taken on to the pep rally. Joplin Mayor Jack Belden proclaimed the weekend as Green and Gold Weekend and presented M.S.S.C. with a Green and Gold Proclamation. On Friday at 2:00 p.m. the campus decorations from dif¬ ferent organizations were judged and Industrial Technology was announced as the winner. The student body had selected 6 finalists and a queen by ballot. They were: Ivy Pugh, Debbie Gibson, Rayma Hartley, Stephanie Ruble, Genea Rough, Linda Talkin, and Marilyn Kanast. An all-campus cookout was held near the biology pond. Dwayne Bowman and the International Road Show provided musical entertain¬ ment for all. Glenn Edgin, C.A.B. Chairperson, announced that Debbie Gibson was chosen 1980 Homecoming Queen. The night was climaxed with a concert performance by Rick Nelson and Gene Cotton. Saturday November 1, began with a parade down Main Street at 10:00 a.m. Thirty-five marching units and a host of organizational floats made up the procession. The Kappa Al¬ phas were judged to be the winners of the float competition. At 12:45 p.m., the game ball was parachuted into Hughes Stadium onto the 50 yard line. During half-time, the highlight was the formal coronation of Queen Debbie Gibson by Sr. Class President Campanella Benson. The Sweepstakes Award was presented to Industrial Technology. The entire homecom¬ ing festivities ended victoriously with the M.S.S.C. Lions win¬ ning over the Wayne State Wildcats 14-13. ABOVE LEFT: Ivy Pugh (queen candidate) riding in the parade. Campus Fair to Become Annual Event An all-campus fair was sponsored by the C.A.B. to give the campus organi¬ zations a chance to hand out material information about their set-up. There were 24 organizations represented at the fair. Materials covered such things as meeting times, membership require¬ ments, and club activities. There was an excellent turnout for the fair, from which many students and organizations benefitted. The C.A.B. plans to have such an event every year. 28
