The social occasions were attended and enjoyed by many MSSC students. The dress attire ranged from come-as- you-are (dances located behind the dorms) to semi-formal (the Sweetheard dance and the Christmas dance located in the College Union Ballroom). 20 Toga, Toga, Toga . . . Thursday, September 11, saw the Fred G. Hughes Stadium parking lot overtaken by MSSC students clad in sheets. It ap¬ peared the price of an education had gotten to some stu¬ dents. It turned out to be only a “Roman Toga Party”. The well attended gathering included a visit from the Joplin Police Department. Music for the four-hour long dance was provided by Steve Scott Disco of Joplin. The constant flow of students to their cars and back again, made you wonder if the pro¬ vided refreshments were unappreciated. On the other hand, you have to consider that there were no provided refresh¬ ments. The custodial and security people made several trips to the trash cans. The event is to become a regular semester happening. 21 POOL SHARKS The second annual pool tournament was held in the Lion’s Den in Billingsly Student Center. Faculty, staff, and students participated in the two-day event. The finalists were selected by process of elimination. Gary Mulkey, of the math depart¬ ment, won the tournament. Endurance Tested The 1981 dance-a-thon, held in Robert Ellis Young Gymna¬ sium, had an excellent turnout. Dance couples who participat¬ ed in the event collected pledges as to the number of hours they completed. The event lasted from 9:00 a.m. on Satur¬ day to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday. Couples were provided with food and drink and raised several thousand dollars for Muscu¬ lar Dystrophy. Much of the success was due to the Kappa Al¬ pha organization. 23 RESIDENCE HALLS EXPAND Living on campus has always been part of student life here at Southern. It becomes an even bigger operation with the construction of the five new two-story residence halls. The halls are co-ed with the exception of Hall B (all women) and Hall C (all men) and with up to five people housed in the apartment-like units. This year it was only necessary to house four people per unit. The apartments contain a large livingroom (two chairs, sofa, two end-ta¬ bles, and a coffe-table) a corner partition (a fu¬ ture kitchen) and a bath. Every unit has its own mailing address and the road is Sarcoxie Trail. Each residence hall has a Student Assistant that is available at all times. Hall B contains the recreation and laundry rooms for the new residence students. Top left: new residence hall bedroom. Right: Webster Hall bedroom. Center: new residence hall livingroom. Immediate Right: A haircutting session in Webster Hall. Webster and South Halls are the older complexes on campus. It is made up of rooms that house two people each. As with any place, residence hall living has to be made more com¬ fortable. The taste in decor has a wide range as seen in the accompanying pictures. There are neat and simple rooms, neat and complicated rooms and ones where the floor is hard to lo¬ cate because the occupant doesn’t pick anything up and can’t find anything. Dorm living can be tough for those who have never shared before. It takes some time to adjust. There are many activities that go along with dorm living. People style hair in the halls, finish canoes in rooms, sew, listen to problems, and much more. Top Left: bedroom in South Hall. Top Right: outside of South Hall. Center: bedroom in Webster Hall. The 1980 “Lion’s By A Landslide” homecoming was kicked off on Thursday, October 30, with a pep rally spon¬ sored by the Downtown Joplin Merchants Association. The Cheerleaders, Coach Frazier, and the senior football players were featured along with the homecoming royalty candidates. The 17 candidates, sponsored by various organizations on campus, were taken to Beefmasters for lunch, featured on KTVJ’s Carol Parker Show, and taken on to the pep rally. Joplin Mayor Jack Belden proclaimed the weekend as Green and Gold Weekend and presented M.S.S.C. with a Green and Gold Proclamation. On Friday at 2:00 p.m. the campus decorations from dif¬ ferent organizations were judged and Industrial Technology was announced as the winner. The student body had selected 6 finalists and a queen by ballot. They were: Ivy Pugh, Debbie Gibson, Rayma Hartley, Stephanie Ruble, Genea Rough, Linda Talkin, and Marilyn Kanast. An all-campus cookout was held near the biology pond. Dwayne Bowman and the International Road Show provided musical entertain¬ ment for all. Glenn Edgin, C.A.B. Chairperson, announced that Debbie Gibson was chosen 1980 Homecoming Queen. The night was climaxed with a concert performance by Rick Nelson and Gene Cotton. Saturday November 1, began with a parade down Main Street at 10:00 a.m. Thirty-five marching units and a host of organizational floats made up the procession. The Kappa Al¬ phas were judged to be the winners of the float competition. At 12:45 p.m., the game ball was parachuted into Hughes Stadium onto the 50 yard line. During half-time, the highlight was the formal coronation of Queen Debbie Gibson by Sr. Class President Campanella Benson. The Sweepstakes Award was presented to Industrial Technology. The entire homecom¬ ing festivities ended victoriously with the M.S.S.C. Lions win¬ ning over the Wayne State Wildcats 14-13. ABOVE LEFT: Ivy Pugh (queen candidate) riding in the parade. There were 24 organizations represented at the fair. Materials covered such things as meeting times, membership require¬ ments, and club activities. There was an excellent turnout for the fair, from which many students and organizations benefitted. The C.A.B. plans to have such an event every year. 28 September Brings Rush Week A fashion show on Wednesday, September 3, began the activities on the Lambda Beta Phi, Zeta Tau-Alpha, and Del¬ ta Gamma Sororities During Formal Rush Week. The fashion show was sponsored by The Attic of Northpark Mall. Fash¬ ions were modeled by the sorority members. A rotation party, on Thursday, was set up to allow each sorority 20-25 minutes to speak to the future members. Friday and Saturday was de¬ voted to parties that were enjoyed by all participants. 29 Music Plays a Major Role at Southern The Missouri Southern State College Commun ity Symphony Orchestra under the direction of William Elliott, assistant professor of music, presented a Fall Concert on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 16. The performance was in Thomas E. Taylor Auditorium on campus. The 45- piece ensemble includes among its members college music faculty and stu¬ dents, public school music educators, and outstanding amateur musicians from the area. The orchestra disband¬ ed Spring semester because not enough of the members returned. 30 I Richard Massa, Adviser Editor-in-Chief Clark Swanson Chief Assoc. This years Lion Pride Band, under the direction of Mr. Pete Havely, has taken on a new and modern look. The new style is corps style and it moves with the music. Mr. Havely added this look because the audience enjoys all the activity that goes on all at once. The traditional instruments are still there, the band has just added danc¬ ers, silks and rifles that will replace the twirlers. The effect is a great success! 34 CONCERT CHORALE The Concert Chorale has per¬ formed several times this year with a repertoire ranging from classical to contempory novelty. The Colle- giates, a smaller ensamble of select voices, expands their performances with choreographed movement and a variety of contemporary music. 35 The understanding and preservation of the environment was highlighted during a special Earth Day program here April 22. The college’s biology department sponsored the event for about 500 junior high and high school students in the area. The students participated in a full day of activities including lectures, field trips and experiments. The idea of the exercise was to make the young people aware of our complex environment, and begin to recognize problems they are going to have to live with, and hopefully solve. The outstanding teams of the Biology League competition for the school year were recognized. The four top science stu¬ dents from each school participated in special activities at George Washington Carver National Monument near Dia¬ mond. The students selected to attend two lectures from a series of four on environmental topics by guest speakers Lorence Larson — Department of Natural Resources, John Woreherde—U.S. Department of Agriculture, Art Boyt—in¬ structor at Crowder College and Cindy Nertfeld of Kansas City. An essay contest and environmental films were shown. The Empire District Electric Company was presented an award by the Environmental Club for their contribution to the protection of the environment. 36 EARTH DAY Focuses on Environment 37 FREEBIE WEEK GOES COUNTRY Karate, comedy and country music meant it was time for the annual Freebie Week celebration. The yearly events sponsored by the Campus Activities Board are open free of charge to all MSSC students, faculty and staff. On Tuesday a “Fun Run” for students, faculty and staff was held in front of the Student Center. The win¬ ners of the women’s division were Ruth Rice—first, and Cindy Worley — second. The men’s division winners were Brad Burton—first, Mike Harp—second and Terry Cole — third. Wednesday got off to a terrific start with a cookout at the pavilion. All the hamburgers, potato salad, baked beans, sno-cones and cotton candy you could eat were to be had. Dewayne Bowman and the IRS provided country music entertainment for the big crowd. 39 KARATE, COMEDY AND SONG Freebie Week activities continued with Larry Daniel, the world’s youngest fourth degree black belt presenting an awesome demonstration of Karate and Martial Arts feats. Tom Chapin, a highly regarded singer, guitarist and composer appeared in the Lion’s Den which had been given a coffeehouse atmosphere complete with candle-lit tables. The audience enjoyed the performance with Mr. Chapin who encouraged the crowd to sing along with him to many of his folksongs. 40 I I I The movie “Honeysuckle Rose” was shown on Thursday evening with a “Country Swing” dance featuring Leavell Brothers and Company, a group from Nevada following. Friday concluded the week of activities with a perfor¬ mance by Burton and Tappar, a flute and guitar duo from Cambridge, Massachusetts. 41 MSSC BILLBOARD ••••• • • ' 4 • « • ••••••••••• • • • • ••••••• ft CAMPUS ACTIVITIES Row 1 (Left to Right): Karen England, Pam Rogers, Gayola Dodson, Michelle DesAutels, Row 2: Dr. Whittle, Greg Rose, Rick Richardson, Robert Daniels, Row 3: Mr. Sloan, Gary Dodson, Rick lanniello, James Parrish, David McQuality, Mr. Boehning, Dr. Phillips. He was the runt of the litter. At 14 he discovered ink and began to sell people drawings that amused them. Saving money, Steve Gibson reached a balanced bankbook, rented a white tuxedo, and now performs for colleges, malls, and nite-clubs. Garry Hess, of the Art faculty, demonstrated the lost wax process in creating his original jewelry designs. (Right Above and Below) A karate demonstration was viewed by many, compliments of Joplin Martial Arts. (Below) Debbie Jackobson from The Botany Shop pro¬ vided helpful hints in raising healthy plants. (Left) Ross Ardrey of the Tri-State Carver’s Guild amazed us with his skill and talent in wood carving. In other Wednesday shows, Sandra Elliott showed us the art of glass stain painting. Sylvia Jones presented a basketry and weaving exhibition. Pam Davies presented a weaving demonstration with a variety of looms, yarns, and designs, the old fashioned way of creating fabrics. 57 The Lions Den . . . C.J. Company and Main Designers demonstrated hair cutting, blow drying, and analysis on volunteer students. Armella Kuehn amazed the audience with her demonstra¬ tion of chair caning. Ooy Weis, wife of campus veterans counselor Andy Weis, demonstrated macrame and rock painting. Ordinary stones were transformed into colorful fish, lady bugs, frogs, or decorated with other designs. Samuel Lopp presented his beautiful display of color and technique in a stain glass window demonstration. In a skill that requires patience and nerveless hands, Sam proved to be an ex¬ pert. The Wednesday Shows were compli¬ ments of the Campus Activities Board. That’s Show Biz The Undergrass Boys played jazz, swing, rock, traditional folk and mu¬ sic from the old west, as well as their own original songs. Allen Ross and John Imes provided an outdoor concert of folk and jazz numbers for dorm students. Graciela Tapia’s Ballet Folklorico Mexicano, internation ally acclaimed dance troup, gave a dazzling and colorful per¬ formance to a packed house. 60 Jeff Shott provided musical entertainment during lunch. 61 TALENT IS EXPRESSED IN MANY WAYS Gene Cotton, who first ap¬ peared at Southern in 1978, brought a rememberance of easy listening music to the Homecom¬ ing activities. He performed sin¬ gles from 1978 plus songs from his latest album “No String At¬ tached.” Many in the audience thought Cotton stole the show from Rick Nelson, returning for his second concert in five years. Best known for his role on TV’s “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet”, Nelson had three hit singles in the mid-50’s and “Gar¬ den Party” in the 60’s. He aver¬ ages over 100 performances a year at colleges, night clubs and fairs. B. F. Maiz, inspiring lecturer performed original poems of his life in the ghetto, in prison and on love, ethics and morality. The Saint Louis Brass Quintet, composed of virtuoso brass performers, played before a crowd in the Performing Arts Center. The Quintet was inspired by the rebirth of chamber music for brass and perform before audiences of all ages and for colleges, universities and community groups across the country. The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, conduct¬ ed by Buddy Morrow, brought back the great sounds of big band jazz. The Kansas City Philharmonic, under the baton of Marc Gottlieb, presented a concert in Taylor Performing Arts Cen¬ ter before an enthusiastic audience. 63 LECTURES ENTERTAINERS APPEAL TO MANY INTERESTS John T. McCarty J. Peter Grace The MSSC Foundation funded a Business and Economics lecture series. Community persons, faculty and stu¬ dents attended the evening lectures in Taylor Auditorium. John T. McCarty, vice-president of Coors, stressed that misled public opinion was the main problem confronting America. J. Peter Grace, president of W. R. Grace, com¬ mented on several issues including the economy and chemical waste. Dr. Ar¬ nold C . Harberger, chairman of the economics department at the University of Chicago, is considered to be one of the most influential people in econom¬ ics today. Arnold C. Harberger 64 Pocket billiards expert Jack White, combines the humor of Don Rickies, the personality of Santa Claus and the skill of Minnesota Fats to keep his audience spell-bound during a demonstration. Tom DeLuca, hypnotist, captivated his audience as partici¬ pants found the experience easy to forget, the non-partici¬ pants are not likely to forget anything. Missouri Attorney General John Ashcroft and former FBI Director Clarence Kelley presented a program on “Crime Prevention and Consumer Protection.” Tarradiddle 1 - 2-3 Excited and awed children from area schools filed into Taylor Auditorium on October 2nd and 3rd to view the children’s play, Tarradiddle 1-2-3. The auditorium lights were dimmed and eight sailors (actors) came run¬ ning from all directions singing and dancing while intro¬ ducing the four short plays. The stories, set in Africa, Denmark, India, and Japan were accompanied by mu¬ sic. The enthusiastic performers established good rela¬ tions with the young audience. Laughter and shouts of advice from the children accompanied all four plays. _ J 66 Cast Jim Blair (Galena, Ks.), Kelly Bowman (Cart hage), C. We are presented with a worm’s eye view of tragedy as seen from the be¬ wildering standpoint of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, the two confused minor characters of the original. It is a play of waiting. Everyone waits for something or some¬ one. The only scene of action comes late in act three. The key then is how to pass the time agreeably while waiting. Each does his best. The classic modern comedy, directed by Duane Hunt, was a revival for the department. Hunt directed the play at the Barn Theatre in 1971. The action oc¬ curs in a cafe bus stop in a small town near Kansas City. The time is early March, 1955. A group of strangers wait out a violent spring blizzard in the small bus station and come away from confron¬ tations with each other and nature a little more mature and wiser. The plot centers around a rough, but likeable cowboy and a beautiful, but slightly tarnished showgirl. 74 75 CARTOON IMPRESSIONIST THRILLS AUDIENCE The voices of Bugs Bunny, Yosemite Sam, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, Jack Benny’s Maxwell, plus hundreds of other beloved characters are all products of the multi-talented Mel Blanc. The most recent addition to his endless repertoire is Twiki on NBC’s series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. Mr. Blanc mesmerized the audience i n Taylor Auditorium this year. The crowd was made up of varied age groups and after the performance, Mr. Blanc distributed autographed pictures to a large group of children. He also granted a live television interview at a press conference in Phinney Hall. Mel Blanc began in radio in 1927 and has had a non-stop career creating sounds of almost every conceivable type including the voices of cartoonlands greatest stars. Early in the year the Lady Lions took fourth place in the Gateway Invitational Tournament hosted by the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The Southern women defeated Arkansas State first round, then lost to William Penn in the semifinals. Southern’s Lady Lions did not participate in the MAI AW Division II Tournament this year, making this the first time since 1975 that Southern had not quali¬ fied for the post-season event. This is the final season at Southern for women’s basketball coach G.I. Willoughby, who plans to move on to another school where she can concentrate on coaching only one sport or assume the directorship of women’s athletics. 89 (Above) Lion’s Basketball 1980-81 Row 1 (Left to Right): Carl Tyler, Ricky Caver, Rod Schurtz, Randy Goughner, Kenn Stoehner, Stan Coleman, Don ‘ ' Skip Taylor, Robert Fonderan, Rod Schrum Row 2: Coach Williams, Randy Kriewal, Jerry Wil¬ son, Paul Merrifield, Willie “Sweet Pea” Rogers, Leroy Oliver, Percy Brown, Coach Ellis. 90 The basketball Lion’s of Coach Chuck Williams completed another highly successful year. The four member team made an excellent showing this year winning the state championship in the air rifle event and placing third in the small bore event. This was the third consecutive year that Southern’s Rifle Team had placed in the top three in State Championship. Two special members of the team are Butch and Mike English. The broth¬ ers are both expert shots and have been interested in shooting for many years. Butch, a junior at Southern, has participated in and won many championships through the years. Through dedication and hard work, he has won a berth on the National Development Team of the United States, giving him the right to use the facilities at the Olympic Training Cen¬ ter in Colorado Springs. He will live and train at the center in preparation for the 1984 Olympic Games. Mike, a sophomore majoring in Mar¬ keting and Management, participated in the International Shooting Match in Mexi¬ co City, placing fourth in the Junior Divi¬ sion. He is currently ranked as one of the top two Juniors in the world. He has been named to Who’s Who Among American High School Students for two years and International Youth and Achievement. Mike has also been named to the National Development Team and been invited to live and train in Colorado. We wish both of them a lot of luck. Brent is a psychology major who likes sports and enjoys reading historical biographies. Brian is majoring in business administra¬ tion, also likes sports, and reads science fiction. Being a twin has its advantages. If one didn’t want to do something the other took his place. There are disadvantages also. In high school typing class they switched places for one day. The teacher returned papers previously handed in and one of them was shocked when he saw all the red marks. He immediately felt better when he remembered the paper belonged to his brother. His future plans are to work in a chain store retail outlet. Randy had a chance to play pro baseball but turned it down, without regrets, to play basketball here. Paul Winters, director, is responsible for everything that happens in the building. He is in charge of seeing that rooms are set up for students and for outside groups. Paul is working towards increasing the use of the Billingsly Student Center through banquets, meetings, and dances. Through student activities, Paul feels that students can learn out of the classroom as well as in, or use what is learned in the classroom in activities. “I like to look at student activities as a co- cirricular activity as opposed to an extracirricular activity.” Paul would like to see the Student Ac¬ tivities Program expanded and developed with new programs and new ideas. _ Manie, Susan Manire, Nancy Manley, Irene Mann, Denise Manning, Timothy Manson, Leonard Marcy, Steve Marion, Landis Marlatt, Julia Marquardt, Jon Marshall, Wanda Marston, Joel 180 Marston, Tim Marti, Kurt Marti, Schelli Martin, Mary Ann Martin, Rhonda Martin, Richard Martin, Stacey Martin, William Martinez, Lisa Marquis, Robin Mascher, David Mason, Evelyn Massa, Tod Massey, Mike Masur, Sandy Mathis, Coletta Mattingly, Brett Mattingly, James Mattox, Brian Mayden, Steven Mayer, Warren Mayes, Bobbie Mayfield, Cheryl Mayfield, Frank Mayfield, Jacquelyn Mayfield, John Mayfield, Sharon McCann, John McClellan, Evelyn McClennen, Marsha McClure, Darin McClure, Kathy McCorkle, Doug McCorkle, Kimberly McCormick, Janice McCourt, Dan McCoy, Susan McCrary, Jeffrey McCullough, Maureen McCurd, Elizabeth Meador, Ted Meadows, Deirdre 181 r Small Businessman Bob Hess left Southern only a short time ago, however he has already established himself in the business community. He is the first person to hold the job and has held it for the past four years. A1 does the landscaping, planting, and attends to the trees and shrubs. Since coming to MSSC, from Carver National Park, A1 has put in the rock gardens in front of Hearnes Hall, Business Admin¬ istration, Student Center, and Science and Math build¬ ing. A1 plants trees and shrubs because flowers are too hard to maintain with just one gardener. The many trees donated by organizations and individuals are greatly ap¬ preciated by everyone on campus. He is originally from Lon¬ don, England, but migrated to the United States when the cost of living skyrocketed. Stewart chose MSSC because his father lived in Joplin. He thinks Joplin is quiet and felt right at home during a re¬ cent trip to New York City, which reminded him of London. Stewart didn’t know what to expect from col¬ lege life, but he feels college is fun as well as hard work and most of the students are friendly. He likes all kinds of sports, especially soccer and to go to movies and also enjoys the theatre. He hopes to become a CPA upon graduation. Pope, Michael Porter, Jill Porter, Sharon Post J.L. These were just a few of the events that occured here on campus. I hope they were all for the bet¬ terment of Southern and look forward to seeing the resul ts in the future. •••• •••• •••• •••• ••••• ••••• ••••• •••• ••••• •••• ••••• •••• •••• ••• •••• ••• •••• •••• •••• I would like to say that being editor this year has been quite an experience for me. I have learned a great deal and feel this experience will help me later. Most people don’t know or realize the work that goes into publishing a book of one year’s events; believe me, it is harder than it looks! I would like to thank my advi¬ sor, Gwen Hunt, for putting up with me. I learned a great deal from her and I guarentee she knows her business and teaches others what she knows. 1 would also like to thank my staff for their devoted efforts, es¬ pecially Dan White, Rex Probert, Campy Benson and Cindy Worley. You all deserve the best because you are the best! Last but not least I would like to thank Richard W Williams, my “right arm”, without your help this book would never have been finished. I would also like to thank my family for putting up with me this year, you are great! Everyone was very supportive and that is what 1 needed most of the time. To the readers, I would like to say this book was pos¬ sible through a lot of fun as well as dedicated hard work and 1 hope you enjoy the memories we have stored here for you now and as a future reference. The 52 Americans held hos¬ tage in the U.S. Embassy in Teheran, Iran were home at last! The 444 day seige by their Iranian captors had come to an end. A special celebration was held in Spiva Park to celebrate the hostages’ re¬ lease and return home. Many people at¬ tended the celebration. There were 52 American flags flying and many yellow ribbons that were all burned at a cere¬ mony that concluded the festivities. Patri¬ otic music was provided by the Memorial High School Band, Impact Brass and Singers from Ozark Bible College, and our own Missouri Southern Concert Cho¬ rale. Several addresses and presentations were made by Mayor Jack Belden, Mer¬ edith Williams, and Lee Phipps. I L Top left: Ringing the bell here on campus in front of Billingsly Student Center . She exposed us to literature and writing in such a way that we became aware of life and the conditions of life that demand endurance, strength and per¬ severance; through her knowledge of literature, she brought the classroom alive with energy and enthusiasm; Miss Dinges gave all of us something that has a value beyond any price: An ex¬ ample of courage and heroism in an age when we think we have no heroes or heroines. The Chart dedicated an extensive article to Miss Dinges, the Winged Lion dedicated its Fall, 1980 issue to her memory, the administration established the Lucille Dinges Lecture Series, and we of the Crossroads would also like to recognize the contribu¬ tion that she made to this campus. The students have lost an inspiring teacher who had the ability to make poets, essayists and prose writers come alive out of text books and stand before the class members in the full attire of their period. Miss Dinges contributed as much to the professional academic environment as she did to her classes in the 10 years she was at Southern, and because of this she will be missed by the members of MSSC’s faculty and staff. The college as a whole can never re¬ place her vitality and enthusiasm that stemmed from an interest in the growth and progress of this campus. She enjoyed and ap¬ preciated all aspects of MSSC that reached the community, ranging from the arts to athletics, and her support of this institu¬ tion never flagged. Miss Dinges’ support of MSSC had its roots in the student body. She respected students as individuals and as new mem¬ bers of the academic community, and she always made the ex¬ tra effort to help when a student had a problem. Her talents as a teacher also included the ability to make us strive to do the very best work we could possibility do. The obstacles became challenges, and we would overcome them with sharpened skills: We inherited her energy and interest in the subject. Every stu¬ dent who had Miss Dinges for a class came away with a unique gift: The ability to match the desire to learn and the intrest in the subject with the energy and perseverance to see a project to its conclusion. Through her, we learned not only about the presented material but also about ourselves. We learned that we can expand our limits and our horizons with hard work and dedication. Those who knew Miss Dinges personally witnessed first¬ hand a boundless courage and a will that matched life on its own terms. Their loss at her death cannot be easily ex¬ pressed because friendship is something more than words and statements. When we lose a great friend, we experience an emptiness that longs to be filled, yet these friends can never be replaced and so they give us gifts of life. These gifts are our memories that envoke laughter and tears and moments of reflective solitude; these gifts are ours forever to pass on to others through our own individualities as we have learned the lessons that our friends taught us. When we meet in life someone who is bigger than life, yet who g oes about daily life with a calm serenity, we come to realize the value of human dignity. Miss Dinges had a gift that encompassed intellect, talent, and the concern for ther human beings. We will miss her, but we will take the life and food for future years that she gave us and maintain our lives at the standard which she raised for us. Right: Dr. Donald Darnton John Johnson retired in January after 15 years in charge of payroll and personnel records. He served faculty, staff and student employees year round, answering countless questions about taxes, insurance, salaries, ushering everyone through the mass of red tape with calmness and humor. He is busier than ever now fishing and traveling and “loving every minute of it.” Faculty Members Retire from Teaching There are three faculty members who retired effective this year. They are Mrs. Hilda Richardson of tbe Education Department, Dr. Helen Gardner of the English Depart¬ ment, and Mrs. Enid Blevins also of the English Depart¬ ment. We want to thank them for their time they have dedicated to the teaching profession. We hope they have enjoyed teaching as much as we have appreciated their guidance through the years here at Southern. We wish you the best for the future and congratulations! Whether it be the secretaries who keep the records typed and filed, or the ones that hand out the financial aid checks and just as methodically take them back when fees are due, the paperwork always gets done. Have no fear, for the ever diligent, ever present security man is near by with ticket book in hand, righting wrongs for the betterment of all. 225 Take occasional notice of the lawns which are always well mani¬ cured and the dirt paths which criss-cross the oval that are ever free from litter. Even more myste¬ rious, the rocks in the rock gar¬ dens are always arranged just so. Never again take for granted the shiny floors which remain that way despite the thousands of feet which trod on them each day.
