Page 210 4 The introduction deals with people and the world we live in like it or not. Authors have dealt with this situation since recorded history began. Ex¬ cerpts are taken from several hooks, essays and collections that deal with various aspects of life. The photographs do not necessarily correspond to the situation described, yet basical¬ ly, all people can at sometime or another relate to an human emotion or reaction. —Gay la Neumever, editor “. . . a journey is like a marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it. I feel better now, having said this, although only those who have experienced it will understand it.” —From TRAVELS WITH CHARLEY by John Steinbeck 6 “When I was very young and the urge to be someplace else was on me, I was assured by mature people that maturity would cure this itch. When years described me as mature, the remedy prescribed was middle age. In middle age I was assured that greater age would calm my fever and now that I am fifty-eight perhaps senility will do the job ... In other words, I don’t improve; in further words, once a bum always a bum. I fear the disease is incurable.” «. Tf 7 “Youngsters are instinctive dramatists for purposes of self¬ protection. They have not yet fitted themselves to the exigencies—to them partially inexplicable—of a mature world. Moreover, their lives are complicated by human variables. They are told by one person that play¬ ing in the mud is permissible . . . .” “Another adult vetoes mud per se. The Ten Com¬ mandments are not carved on stone; they vary, and children are helplessly dependent on the caprice of those who give them birth and feed and clothe them. And tyrannize.” “From the standpoint of logic, a child is rather horribly perfect. A baby may be even more perfect but so alien to an adult that only superficial stan¬ dards of comparison apply. The thought processes of an infant are completely unimaginable. But babies think, even before birth ... We are con¬ ditioned to react rather peculiarly to the idea that a nearly-viable embryo may think. We are sur¬ prised, sh ocked into laughter, and repelled. Nothing human is alien.” —from “MIMSY WERE THE BOROGOVES by Lewis Padgett 9 “Expressing a human need, I always wanted to write a book that ended with the word Mayonnaise.” —From TROUT FISHING IN AMERICA by Richard Brautigan 10 ' “February 3, 1952 Dearest Florence and Harv, 1 just heard from Edith about the passing of Mr. Good. Our heart goes out to you in deepest sympathy. God’s will be done. He has lived a good long life and he has gone to a better place. You were expecting it and it was nice you could see him yester¬ day even if he did not know you. You have our prayers and love and we will see you soon. God bless you both. Love, Mother and Nancy P.S. Sorry I forgot to give you the mayonnaise.” n E « R “Ours is essentially a tragic age, so we refuse to take it tragically. The cataclysm has happened, we are among the ruins, we start to build up new little habitats, to have new little hopes.” 12 “It is rather hard work: there is no smooth road into the future: but we go round, or scramble over the obstacles. We’ve got to live, no matter how many skies have fallen.” —From LADY CHATTERLY’S LOVER by D. H. Lawrence 14 something that endures, and so we fill our minds with rubbish and facts, in the silly hope of keeping our places. The thoroughly well-informed man—that is the modern ideal. And the mind of a thoroughly well-informed man is a dreadful thing.” -From Oscar Wilde’s THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY L “Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans in the finite space of a planetary ecosystem as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who do survive.” —From DUNE by Frank Herbert 16 1 Lion Pride Band 20 The MSSC Lion Pride hand, un¬ der the direction of William Elliot and Delhert Johnson, promoted spirit at area foothall and basketball games. They were featured in the 1975 Winter Carnival at St. Paul, Minnesota and the Carthage Maple Leaf Parade. 21 1 Convocations I fl. «s49fei v Warren Farrell spoke on his hook, “The Liberated Man”. In their grey v isions they obtain glimpses of eternity, and thrill, in awak¬ ing, to find that they have been upon the verge of the great secret.” . . . from “Eleonora” by Edgar Allan Poe 202 . . . the range of Imagination is unlimited. Its materials extend through the universe. Even out of its deformities it fabricates that Beauty which is at once its sole object and its inevitable test. . . . from “Marginalia” by Edgar Allan Poe _ fep 5 HHHHP 203 . . I like too many things and get all confused and hung¬ up running from one falling star to another till I drop. This is the night, what it does to you. I had nothing to offer anybody except my own confusion.” —from On the Road by Jack Kevouac 206 “You have learned by your own experience that outside can become inside. You have been beyond the pairs of opposites. It seemed a hell to you! learn, my friend, that it is heaven! For it is heaven that lies ahead of you .... Summon up the past, summon up the future: they are both within you! Up until now you have been the slave of what is inside you. Learn to master it.” —from Stories of Five Decades by Herman Hesse 207 208 “Nature can be very dramatic and heroic, but she in¬ evitably ends on a ludicrous note. We weep out our hearts, then have to blow our noses or pay a visit to the water closet. Very banal.” “The sonorous music of the poetry delighted the crowds . . . ; They delighted, simply, in resonance and harmony. They roared in approval and did not understand in the least. To the simple American the music was enough, and they did not hear anything ominous.” —from Testimony of Two Men by Taylor Caldwell iV CROSSROADS STAFF Gayla Neumeyer, editor Eva Conyne, business manager Murray Buzzard Jim Canton Terri Dixon Mike Higgins Sheryl Jacobs Ken Jones Karen Klein Sharon Klein Debbie Klinge Shawn Hurst Lynn McAllister Jeff Reeve Lee Seneker Ron Robson, adviser ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Carthage Press, Stan Jones, Joplin Globe, Steve Holt, Carl Lind, Dale Mooney, MSSC Police Lab, Robert Terry, George Hempen, Oriental Gardens, Howard Dugan, Jane Patterson, Ozark Memorial Park Cemetry. 210 The Performing Arts Center and Stadium Complex . . .
