It’s difficult to express a pervasive atmosphere. Because MSSC is a small commuter college, 9 10 of the 3,000 student body drive to the school for classes, spend part of the day in classes, and in and around campus, and by 4:30, except for a few janitors and secretaries, the campus is virtually deserted. Institutionally only 6 years old, Missouri Southern is in a germinal state. In 1972, working for full state support, Southern assumed the title of Missouri Southern State College. And with that title, hopefully, affirmation of emerging maturity. Maybe enough said that MSSC is on its way. I Southern’s academic criteria, it would seem, would be as most college’s: part viable and part drivel— an occasional quickening toward creative learning as the wheat is separated from the chaff and personalized into viability. Or perhaps, as Lewis Carroll’s Mock Turtle in ALICE IN WONDERLAND would have it, education reduced to: “Reeling and writhing of course, to begin with . . . and the three branches of arithmetic — ambition, distraction, uglification, and derision.” “And how many hours a day did you do lessons?” said Alice. “Ten hours the first day,” said the Mock Turtle, “nine hours the next, and so on.” What a curious plan!” exclaimed Alice. “That’s the reason they’re called lessons,” the Gryphon remarked, “because they lessen from day to day.” Then the eleventh day must have been a holiday?” “Of course it was,” said the Mock Tur¬ tle. “And how did you manage on the twelfth?” Alice went on eagerly. “That ' s enough about lessons.” Opening 7 If nothing else, students became adept in the fine art of juggling: juggling classes, professors, money, books, parents, schedules, friends— time. Southerners divied out precious time between pressing educational demands, campus and social activities and jobs that afforded either a few extra dollars or next semester’s tuition. Term papers, lab reports, and mid-terms were cranked out between vacations. Days were measured in terms of only 3 1 2 weeks until Thanksgiving or 10 more class days until Christmas. Priorities were established, consciously or through daily habit: 6 hours in the student union with cards, cue sticks, and Rolling Stones and 2 hours in class, perhaps; or, 5 hours in class, 2 hours in the library. And anywhere in between those two extremes. 8 Opening Campus activities accelerated at a remarkable rate as compared to past years. This year was the third year for students to live in the dorms, animating the dormant campus climate after official school hours. Kappa Alpha, the first MSSC social fraternity to “go national,” established residence in its own house. Election-year involvement on campus burgeoned from within the ranks of the Young Democrats and Young Republicans. Convocations were scheduled during class periods and classes dismissed to encourage attendance. A new winter sport, soccer, was added to Southern’s calendar. Southern’s fine arts program fused with community events providing a wealth of concerts, plays, and art shows. Not a hotbed of nightlife activity for young people, Joplin, Missouri, the 40,000 community that houses Southern was often abandoned for the charms of small Kansas towns. As money and time allowed, Southerners found weekend company, blaring music, and a legal drinking age of 18. Opening 11 Perhaps the keynote of MSSC atmosphere is one of straining to become— straining to break away from the stigma of Joplin Juco. Striving on the part of faculty and administration to establish an institution essentially of higher learning— not 13th and 14th grades. Involvement on the part of students in the campus, academically and socially— beyond obligatory classroom attendance— to generate within themselves the camaraderie of an academic community. Opening 13 W M. -% - Jzzl Iw Campus life: Re-establishing September to May identities Campus organizations competed for Homecoming awards at noon rally. Defeating Doane College of Doane, Nebraska in the semi-finals, the Lions went on to defeat Northwestern College of Orange, Iowa in an exciting, down-to-the-wire ballgame. The offense, led by senior quarterback Ray Harding and supported by two returning running backs and a superbly talented offensive line, out- scored their opponents in an average of 29-7 points a game. It was a balanced offensive with Harding passing 192 yards plus 170 yards rushing per game. Harding threw 9 touchdown passes and completed 47.4% during the regular season. Lydell Williams, a freshman, added a new dimension to the Lions’ at¬ tack as a longrange scoring threat. The Gang, as the defense unit named itself, did an outstanding job as they held opponents to 7 points a game. The defensive line and linebackers proved to be brutal and savage in their execution of opposing quarterbacks and runners. The defensive backs did their share of hitting and still managed to hold the passing attack of the opponent to 85 yards per game, intercepting 23 passes and allowing only one long TD pass to be thrown against them all season long. The Big Mean Green got it all together not only for an undefeated season, but also a National Championship. Jim Frazier’s Lions earned the right to play in the play-offs by a number one rating in the NAIA Division II and a 10-0 record. The balance in shooting, rebounding , and speed was a major factor for the season’s success. The fast-action Lions filled the courts with excitement. After 17 of the regular season games, the Lions sported a 13-4 record. Missouri Southern opened the season with a vic¬ tory over archrival Gorillas of Kansas State College of Pittsburg. The Lions lost to Nicholls State University in the opening game of the Strawberry Classic in Ham¬ mond, Louisana, but a victory over East Texas State gave MSSC the consolation trophy in the tournament. Cicero Lassiter tied a tourney record scoring 49 points in two games. Previously unbeaten Parsons College came up short against the Lions 65-61 while Rockhurst shocked Sout herners 94-65 just before the end of the fall semester. MSSC started off 1973 big, taking the cham¬ pionship trophy at the Friends Invitational Tournament. Cicero Lassiter was named Most Valuable Player and Cicero along with Jimmie Lassiter and John Thomas made the All-Tournament team. Missouri Southern was ranked fifteenth nationally by the Carr ratings after 16 games. Cicero Lassiter led the Lions in scoring with 20.3 game average and in assists with 61 after 14 games. MSSC averaged 73.5 points a game to the opposition’s 69.1. The Lions led their opponents in rebounding 729-490 after 14 games. Jimmie Lassiter averaged 10 rebounds per game.
