Two tied for Crossroads Queen: Nancy Braeckel and Jean Cillie. Dean Blaine retired, June, '47, after fifty- five years of service in education. 82 were graduated from JJC, Spring, '47. Dr. Harlan Bryant was named second dean of UC. 1947-48 New .UC library was opened. Two new courses offered: Principles and Techniques of Guidanceg and Prin- ciples of Social Security. Franklin Technical School was erected under the supervision of the Federal Works Agency and dedicated March, '48 Crossroads ranked second in National com- petition with .lunior Colleges. UC Lions Basketball team won Missouri State Conference Champions. Enrollment exceeded 600 mark. YWCA cabinet planned Service Fund Drive. 1948-49 JJC was approved by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Dr. Harlan Bryant, dean, resigned. Enos Currey, Jr., a member of the 1939 graduating class became the first graduate of .UC to address the stu- dent body assembly, Spring, '4-9. 1949-50 The HG. I.'s Club collected baskets for the needy for Christmas. Thomas H. Flood named Dean of .l.lC. Berna Jean Taylor was Crossroads Queen. 1950-51 .UC Science Club was organized. The faculty of UC became members of the American Association of Univer- sity Professors. Phi Theta Kappa, honorary fraternity, was instituted at HC. Faculty of UC dined on fish caught by the faculty. 1951-52 .UC students staged a 'leap Year Party, Feb., ,52. Hour Town was produced for the third time in the history of the college. An elementary course in radio was of- fered in conjunction with radio sta- tion WMBH. A field secretary was appointed to pro- mote enrollment at JJC. 1944-45 Wfhe Man Who Came for Dinner was the play chosen. Enrollment dropped to 135 students, Fall, '44. .UC closed for fumigation in an effort to alleviate the current seige of flu and colds among the students, Dec., '44. Alumni Association was organized, with Martha McCormick first sponsor. First annual banquet was held, Spring, '45. 1945-4-6 In the presence of H. E. Blaine, first dean of the college, Blaine Hall was dedi- cated, Nov., '46. Returning G. l.'s enrolled in JJC, Fall, '4-6. Construction was authorized for building six dormitories for college veterans at 13th and 15th Sts. between Murphy and Picher Aves. Bill Girgsby was elected president of the Veterans Club. Lion's Lair was the name for the new recreation spot in Blaine Hall. Supt. Wood was elected President of the Missouri Public Junior College As- sociation. 200 students enrolled in summer session 1946-47 College Student dormitories became known as G. 1. City. Watermelon Feast enjoyed by summer stu- dents with almost three-fourths of a ton of watermelons being consumed. The Chart was given number one rating by Missouri Interscholastic Press As- sociation. LIONS Basketball team won lst place in the first post-war State Jr. College Conference. .lack Tabler, halfback, was named to All- American third team.

Teachers of Tomorrow, 1948 Franklin Technical School was dedicated March, 1948. An early Beta Beta Beta Sorority meeting-1940. The Minstrel Show of1945. The Crossroads was dedicated to H. E. Blaine, the college's first dean. 1952-53 Pi Alpha Pi, honorary business fraternity, was organized. Nancy Ann Rogers was crowned HQueen of the Snow Ball, Dec., '52. .IIC Basketball team won lst place in the Missouri State .lunior College Con- ference. 1953-54 Dr. Maurice Litton becomes 4th Dean of IIC. Beta Beta Beta Sorority sent box of school supplies to Kathleen Crone, a former Beta teaching in Korea. Faculty and students stage costume ball. .IJC Basketball team tied for lst place in the Mo. State Ir. College Con- ference. 1954-55 Circle K Club, sponsored by the .loplin Kiwanis Club, was organized. .IIC Football team placed 2nd in Inter- state Conference. Crossroads paid tribute to Miss Edna Drummond, te a c h e r of biological sciences. Faculty men played the Y.M.C.A. men in Basketball. 1955-56 Choir had an outstanding season making trips to Kansas City and Des Moines, Iowa. .IIC Football team placed 2nd in Inter- state Conference. Madalyn Gustafson was chosen Homecom- ing Queen. 1956-57 .l.lC Basketball team Won lst place in the Missouri State Junior College Con- ference. Young Republicans Club was organized. Tribute was paid to .l.IC's first dean, Harry E. Blaine, who dies this year.
