The officers of the Senate are elected by the student body at large. Among its other activities, immediately after the group was elected they set to work planning the Homecoming festivities. Under the leadership of its presi¬ dent, Dave Garrison, the Lion’s Den was opened for the enjoyment of the students during their leisure hours. Helping Dave in his position as president are Buddy Paul, vice president; Lynne Francis, secretary; Susan Askins, treasurer; and Suzanne Bogner, parlia¬ mentarian. This year he was the first football player in the history of the college to receive the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-American Award. He was selected as fullback on the first team, which is made up of eleven players chosen from the nation as a whole. Myrl was the only player from the state of Missouri to receive this award. In addition, Myrl was a unanimous selection for the All-Conference team both years at J.J.C. Buster Brown, a student at Juco, was also chosen as a member of the All- Conference first team. MYRL GUNN BILL KELLEY Bill Kelley is another star in the Joplin Junior College football field. He was one of the forty-four players selected by the National Junior College Ath¬ letic Association to play in the second annual All- American East-West Bowl game, December 7 at Jack- son, Mississippi. Bill, who is a very good pass receiver and down- field blocker, played an important role for the West team during the game in Mississippi. The 180-pound six footer was elected by the other members of his team at the college as captain of the 1957 Lions. THE LIONS ROAR! Coach Stegge and his squad survey a tense moment on the field. Stands full )f fans is a feature of football games, as they turn out in full force to cheer the Lions on to victory. Hungry spectators swamp the concession stand at halftime. 65 Kneeling: Jerry Kelley, Eldon Mailes, Ronnie Ellis, Bob Givens, Lew Springer, and Bobby Baker. Standing: Ron ' Mitchell, Dave Clanton, Bob Keeling, Learon Tomlinson, Leo DeSpain and Gerald Butts. 7957-5$ 7eam The Lions wound up their 1958 basketball season with a record of six wins and four losses for conference play to take third place in the I.J.C.C. Even though all the boys played outstanding ball, Bob Keeling and Leo DeSpain were singled out by the coaches of the junior college conference teams as members of the All-Interstate Conference Basketball Team. Keeling, 6’5” center, who established an individual scoring record for a conference player with 43 points against Kansas City on February 14, amassed a total of 419 points this season with an average of 22.6 per game for conference play. Bob was elected by his teammates as captain of the 1958 Lions. Leo DeSpain 6’2” forward who started in all the Lions’ games this season, had an overall season total of 291 points for an average of 12.1 points per game. Leo took the award for the most valuable player of the year. The team owes its expert basketball instruction to its coaches, Buddy Ball and Dudley Stegge. 67 Ronnie Ellis scrambles to keep the ball away from an opposing Arkansas freshman as Leo and Lew await the outcome. Bob Keeling, jump-shot artist for the Lions, tips in two more points in the clash with Haskell Institute. 68 J.J.C.’s peppy cheerleaders have provided colorful entertainment at the football and basketball games during the past season. The Homecoming pep rally was highlighted by a ' blazing bonfire around which every¬ one gathered for the victory snake dance. The rally was followed by a horn-honking motorcade down Main Street.
