. - . ,f ' sf':f'f -fa. mfg- .5 Q.. wsu., www'-u na-me s , H w r TRIBUTE TO HARRY E. BLAINE Dean Blaine has been one of my dearest friends since 1937. Our friendship did not end with his death this year. One does not lose a friend whose kindness has cut so sharply across one's life. I worked for .two years as a student in his office. My respect for him and his dear wife grew with each day. There were so many acts of kindness . . . very practical acts such as giving money from his own pocket to financially distressed students . . . or paying for meals for the football team when there was no money in the college budget . . . or graciously entertaining the sophomores in his home on Class Day . . . or less tangible acts such as following us after graduation with news of better jobs than we could have found for ourselves . Mr. Blaine had the rare gift of understanding. I think it was because he listened so well. I see him yet, seated at his desk slowly pushing a pencil between his fingers as he listened to a student. His keen mind sensed unspoken thoughts, needs, and hopes. This large, deliberate man had white hair and rounded shoulders. He met the challenge of establishing the junior college at an age when many men have retired. Yet we never missed his slowfmoving figure at a football game, or a track meet, a pep rally, or a class play. His very age had given him the patience to cope with his job, a great wisdom to share with his students, and a deep faith in young people. He never forgot a face, rarely a name. He kept track of his people until his death. I have the feeling he is still keeping track of us. Remembering him gives us a Warm sense of being cared for. Greatness never dies. Sometimes it lives on in music, statues, paintings or words, Dean Harry E. Blaine's greatness lives on in the lives of his students. Mary Laird McClintock Editor, 1939 Crossroads
