A 31 6 victory over a Fort Scott eleven which had previously defeated the Lions 18-0 was the high point of the season. Coach Dudley Stegge’s charges gained much experience which should be valuable next year to the returning squad members. Constantly facing bigger squads of greater manpower, the 1952 53 Lion team proved to be a scrappy outfit which never gave up. f 47] CHEERLEADERS Dull moments were few and far between for Lion sports fans this year; and a large measure of our athletic success can be attributed to our cheerleaders. Under the leadership of Captain Mary Lou Gullette, these girls kept school spirit at a high level. The overall record of the 1942-43 cagers was 11 wins, 16 losses, but most of these de¬ feats were at the hands of the larger Kansas junior colleges. The Lions wound up a brilliant season by downing Bolivar 74-70 for consolation honors in the National Junior College Regional at Moberly. In league play the Lions defeated Bolivar twice and St. Joseph once. Only an upset loss to St. Joseph kept us from being undisputed champions; but the Green and Gold trounced the Griffons 74-55 and 57-51 in later meetings. The victories over Southeast Missouri Baptist and one of the Flat River tri¬ umphs were forfeits. As a team we outscored our league op¬ ponents by an average of 59 to 62 per game. Clcn Evans Guard Jim Berry Forward John Myers Guard Ken Magruder Forward Joe Phillips Center Doyle Barlet Guard Chuck Kenney Forward All season long the team worked well together and scor ' ing was welhbalanced. It would be hard to pick any out ' standing players, but special mention must be made of Bob Young, 6 foot 3 1 2 inch center from Pineville, and Rocky Comfort ' s Chuck Kenney. Both averaged 15 1 2 points per game, amassing 355 to lead the squad in scoring for the year. Chuck threw in 333 points during the year and set a school mark by dunking 30 points in a game against Iola. Both were named on the albstate team. E D U CA T I O N Thus, interests and skills are developed for leisure time activities. Such team sports as bad ' minton, basketball, bowling, and volleyball pro¬ mote much enthusiasm for this program.
