THE PIHSIIIE VS MESSAGE 6'1- To the Class of 1943: In a world-wide environment turbulent with war and tumors of war, your class entered Mississippi State College for Women in the fall of 1939, when it was diffi- cult to predict coming events. Notwithstanding this uncertainty, however, you have witnessed progress on the part of your Alma Mater. In your Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior years, there were maximum capacity enrollments. Your class enjoys the distinction of being the largest graduating class in a decade, and, with the exception of only three other classes, the largest in the history of the Mississippi State College for Women. In your Sophomore year, the name of M. S. C. W. was placed upon the list of accepted institutions of the Association of American Universities, and in your Senior year a chapter of Mortar Board was installed at the college. Also within your aca- demic lives, curriculums leading to degrees in Physical Education and in Library Sci- ence have been adcled. I In the realm of current events, your class has experienced Pearl Harbor, the estab- lishment of the Columbus Army Flying School, the reception of Dates in the uniforms of the armed forces of the United States and her Allies, the rationing of commodities prized by every undergraduate, and has participated in many defense activities, including protective air raid drills. Throughout this changing scene, you have proven yourselves to be growing and enthusiastic students of the Mississippi State College for Women and, at the same time, loyal citizens of the United States. In both of these capacities, you have made your adjustments intelligently, graciously, and patriotically. You have selected com- petent, tactful leaders from among your group and have supported and followed these leaders with rare discrimination. You have grown as individuals in body, in mind, in adaptability, and in spirit. Your Alma Mater has faith in you and in your ability to render unique service to society. She sends you forth with her love and her blessings. Sincerely yours, if , B. L. PARKIN SON, ' President. I29 1
