CENTENNIAL SCULPTURE Unveiling October 13, 1978 Dr. Jean Snyder, chairman of the Centennial Sculpture Committee, emceed the unveiling ceremony. Drizzling rain did not halt the unveiling cere- monies for the first modern piece of sculpture on campus. However, immediate response from the student population concerning the art work, which was placed in front of Allen Hall, was rather dismal. Pranksters late one evening placed For Sale signs around it. Many stu- dents said they would have appreciated the contemporary piece much more if it had been in bronze or gold rather than the rusty metal used to further strengthen the concept of State ' s one hundred year existence. Dr. Jean Snyder, chairman of the Centennial Sculpture Committee responded to the adverse comments, People have different tastes in art and we are not discouraged about some nega- tive attitudes toward the statue. Nevertheless, the sculpture was meant to remain as a permanent fixture of State ' s noble past and promising future. 25

CENTENNIAL HOMECOMING October 14, 1978 Although the recall of the homecoming elections the week before the game filled the campus with tension, Mississippi State ' s decisive victory over Florida State cleared the way for a festive weekend.
