Great A M Affair Aids Creative Arts Complex Warm temperatures and a clear blue sky prevailed. Here and there a woman could be seen dressed in a long gingham skirt, long-sleeved blouse, and a bonnet tied around her neck. It was September 9, 1978, the day of the Great A M Affair. Earlier in the day an auction had been held, complete with an auctioneer attired in a white linen suit. Local musicians and the Blackfriars provided enter- tainment throughout the afternoon. Farther down the drill field, a lady was meticulously at work on a weaving loom. The aroma of freshly popped popcorn filled the air, luring bystanders to its source. An endeavor of the Starkville Chamber of Commerce, the Great A M Affair was planned as a fund-raiser for the proposed Creative Arts Complex. The Affair ' s success was attributed to its appeal to both the young and the young-at-heart. Fund-raising activities such as a cake- walk, a dunking machine, and a raffle for a diamond ring made it a financial success. A hayride carried many through the streets of Starkville, while others on campus steered antique electric cars around the drill field. Finally, games of checkers and horseshoes completed the old-fash- ioned atmosphere of the Great A M Affair. w w CPU ftefe?! T. Costello 18
