GloUfg E lireworks, parades, celebrations — our nation ' s 200th birthday party! The United States of America with all of its pomp, splendor, and boastful pride has partially man- aged to survive a bitter rivalry with father time. But, through a trial and error process, unmatched in the history of modern civilization, the U.S.A. steadfastly has taken and held the number one position in world affairs. So, here we are — the star-spangled, undaunted home of the free, two centuries later. Both our forefathers and today ' s leaders refuse to be satisfied with present achievement. Perfection ( the BEST ) was and remains the American dream — the unattainable coup de grace of our powerful democracy. Perhaps this is the rea- son that chants of criticism ring so loudly, not only from jealous outsiders but by our very own citizenry. Stand back, take heed of Jefferson ' s all too familiar prescription for our con- tinued well-being: We the people, in order to form a more perfect union — Americans thank goodness will never be satisfied — HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
