As our nation completes a second century of independence, Mississippi State University (old A M) pproaches a centennial celebration of its very own. Along with the purple-mountained motherland, 4SU has sufficiently bested the trials that naturally confront a university. Class of 1923 ' s Most Popu- ir John C, Stennis could have hardly forseen that blacks would be enrolled at his alma mater in a 3w short years, or run for governor for that matter. Soldiers in blue once milling about the drillfield ave been replaced by a free-lance type student decked in a Fuzzy Buffer T-shirt. Times have changed onsiderably in Mississippi and can be exemplified no more radically than by the 1975 gubernatorial ampaign which threw at odds two unlikely candidates. A popular, business-like, it ' s time to change Republican Carmichael was pitted against a wealthy, bulldozer-driving, lunch-pail carrying Democrat inch. Regardless of the various political storms and social changes that evolve around our university, 4SU still creeps toward the century mark. Ninety-eight years and counting — State in the good old American tradition is bound to succeed. 15
