If the student is forced to reside in MSU ' s famous residence halls or dorms as they are more commonly known, he may encounter another facet of University life extremely unfamiliar to his former mode of existence. Used to studying in a quiet room at home, the student discovers that the quiet hours he always heard about are just a synonym for Keep it down to a roar. Always somebody just got their lit- tle heart broken and must go screaming down the hall to release their emotions or either somebody is continually coming in inebriated from what was to be a night of studying traded for a night at Mayhew Junction. However, being quick to adapt and eager to learn, students soon learn that dorm life isn ' t so bad. You quickly decide that going to bed at 10 o ' clock is really a drag, that the hicks and goobs on your hall are really nice people, that sliding down a soaped floor on your rump is really a lot of fun, and that a panty raid, regardless whether you ' re on the receiving or giving end, is all part of the pattern of college frivolity, as well as trying to sneak an illegal visitor into your room. 29

Nevertheless, Daddy sent you off to college to get a degree or an educa- tion — two goals which are not always one and the same. Soon you find that you ' ve got to go to class, you ' ve got to study occa- sionally before exams, and if you ' re an engineering major, you may have to forego that afternoon nap for a six-hour lab. Invariably, the student finds that he ' ll often sleep through till noon, flunk test, make a mad rush to the Registrar ' s office to drop that course before 3:30 p.m. the last drop date, and often decide he was destined to be a teacher rather than a brain sur- geon. 30
