The Graduate School 377 Students Do Graduate Study In Five Fields Under the direct guidance of Dr. Chester McKee, Assistant Dean of the Graduate School, and indirectly under Dr. A. D. Suttle, Vice President for Graduate Studies, 377 men and women were enrolled in the Graduate School this year. As they undertook the strenuous demands ot the school, they vied for Master ' s Degrees in five schools: Agriculture; Arts and Sciences; Business and Industry; Education; and Engi- neering. In addition, others were working to- wards Ph.D ' s in Agronomy, Animal Sciences, Plant Sciences, Biological Sciences, Engineering, and Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences. Established in 1936, the Graduate School has done much to further the interests of higher education in Mississippi. Throughout the free world, men and women with graduate degrees from Mississippi State University may be found working for the betterment of our society. The School Of Arts And Sciences History And Government Department Split The History and Government De- partment was divided this year into two separate departments, History and Political Science, another ex- ample of the progress of the school in keeping up with the changing patterns of modern day society. 771 students were enrolled this year in the twelve departments of the School of Arts and Sciences. The largest department was Political Science, with 126, followed by math- ematics, with 91. The School of Arts and Sciences was established in 1911, and in 1914 the department of Chemistry became the first chemistry department in the Southeast to be accredited by the American Chemical Society.
