school of arts and sciences When the doors of the college opened in 1880, there was a chemistry department, and the School of Science was organized in 1911. Chemical Engineering became a part of the chemistry department in the thirties and was the only department in four states recognized by the American Chemical Society in 1941. The Department of Geology, with its petroleum geology majors has a large number of students, as does the Phys- ics Department. The biological sciences are represented by the departments of bacteriology, Botany and zoology, and entomology. The discoverer of aureomycin was a graduate of this school. In the Liberal Arts Division of this school are found the departments of English and mathematics as the two largest, though the history department has the most active graduate program in the state. Other social science fields are political science, sociology, philosophy, and religion. ■
